It's something I would be interested in as well. I've looked into the topic myself in the past, but at most, you'd generally only find games that would reach parity with DX12, not exceed it (regardless of DXVK or Native Vulkan). The problem is that also, a lot of these benchmarks are across different hardware and are often out of date by a few years, so who knows how the former can impact results and improvements over time could change the latter. A great example is something like CS:GO, which has been recorded as being faster than Windows, but things have changed over the years with how the game's rendered but it also now has experimental Vulkan on Linux so maybe it's EVEN BETTER, but the benchmarks made within the last year are clearly not as comprehensive or on nearly as appropriate hardware as the one I'm thinking of from a 3-4 years ago.
Why is it such a fukken mess to get a clear cut set of data on this when otherwise the pride of Linux is community feedback n' shit. Thank you for finally not being obtuse about this, unfortunately I already knew about those ones and if you have any other suggestions I'd like those too.
It's almost like game developers supporting a platform is important. A lot of that stuff, like mf-install, is also about working around legal issues because MS would throw a shitfit if you tried to bundle their media foundation libraries with a distro, or if Steam tried supplying them.
Unfortunately that circle can only be broken by money. A big company pouring lots and lots of money into the platform as a long-term investment, which is what Valve is doing right now.
If you tried gaming on Linux 10 years ago, the current state feels amazing in comparison, but that's because they've already spent millions on improving it. And yet there's a long way to go still.
A lot of it is also because of the image of what is publicly acceptable or a widespread practice. People will adjust their efforts based on the perceived "bare minimum" and at the moment that bare minimum is probably whatever phone gets marketed to people the most.
Linux requires some more (or in some cases vastly more) computer literacy than other applications and we have probably already moved past peak computer literacy.
It would likely be better for society and curb the decline in computer literacy if devices and computers moved closer towards Linux in terms of "user friendliness" and not the other way around since a qualitatively worse experience that is more difficult to tweak (but which may also not need to be tweaked) is the outcome of adjusting ever downward for the computer illiterate.

No? Proton exists, along with it's proton-ge-custom branch along with Lutris and Bottles. Gaming on Linux has literally never been better and it keeps getting better. Especially if you're using an Arch or Arch-derived distro.
>> Linux Gaming >is it really that bad?
Not for me.
Probably for you though.
Because Ganker is full of normies and therefore you probably are one. Switching to Linux for better performance is a meme unless you only care about one or two very specific games, because for every game that runs with +5 FPS out-of-the-box due to lack of Windows bloat or some advantage of Vulkan over DirectX, there will be several games that don't work out-of-the-box (i.e. require tweaking) or perform a bit worse because Proton isn't perfect or because a Linux port was half-assed by some developer who wanted to appear based without putting in the work. It very well may be the case that any required tweaks for your favorite games are well documented and easy to apply, and that games with degraded performance still run well enough to meet your monitor's refresh rate anyway so you might not care, and in general you might have a fine experience. But ultimately you need to do your own cost-benefit analysis of whether your distaste for Windows or desire to use a free OS outweighs whatever difficulty you might encounter. How much difficulty you have will depend on what you actually want to play, but if you consider all games, then gaming is easier on Windows, and trying to make Linux look appealing to people who don't already hate Windows is a waste of time. I'd love more support for Linux and that will require more users, but despite that, if you're happy with Windows, please fricking stay there. Don't be memed into thinking someone who likes Windows should try Linux just for better performance. You'll just become another "waaah I tried Linux and it sucked because I couldn't figure out how to unzip files" dipshit, and then we'll have to tell you to frick off, and you'll cry about gatekeeping despite not actually wanting to use Linux anymore. We're all tired of it.
It's not bad at all.
The few holdovers are some games with EAC or anti-cheat(Destiny 2, Valorant, Leagueof Legends are all a PITA to get running), but pretty much everything else works OOTB or with a minor tweak. THe most common thing I get is occasional audio crackle which is fixed by literally just posting PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command% into the launch paramters of the game 99.99% of the time.
You can play 100% of games while using linux for most of your uses, dual boot or virtualization is an option I rarely see people mention in these threads.
I'm trying it out for a month on another ssd. So far the only issues I have aren't related to gaming. I can't put it to sleep/suspend since it just instantly wakes, and discord starts flashing and gets sluggish unless I use the website instead of the flatpak

I use arch btw
Depends entirely on how much soulless cash grab FPS shit you play.
I can't put it to sleep/suspend since it just instantly wakes, and discord starts flashing and gets sluggish unless I use the website instead of the flatpak
>discord starts flashing and gets sluggish unless I use the website instead of the flatpak
turn off hardware acceleration in browser, it was causing slowdown in mine too.
I'll give that a try thanks
Fedora 36 since last time I used it lots of things just worked compared to other distros
Which distro are you on?
stop using that spyware crap
>zoomers took over Pingu and turned him into a shitty horror meme
Frick this gay Earth. There's nothing pure or sacred anymore.
I'm not even going to ask
any good linux channels? I don't mind in-depth but something between casual and advance is preferred.
eflinux was a favorite of my for a while back when I was starting. His videos helped me learn how to install Arch Linux from scratch.
There's also channels like TechHut, LearnLinuxTV and ChrisTitusTech.
When I was stuck with only a Linux pc I exclusively played turn BASED games because there wasn't anything else other than shitty quake clones that most people sucked at
>most people sucked at
including yourself?
I was the cream of the crap at Nexuiz and Black personed most of the fellow baddies I fought
t. saw an old youtube video a few years ago that had me in it and cringed
It's only bad if you get most of your games from dlsite, games that require rpgmaker assets to work generate tons of problems and you can't be sure if the problem is on your end or the game is just crap.
What's up with the hate with Linux so much on this board?? It's works well on my machine.
Contrarianism.
being contrarian would be using linux wouldn't it
Pajeetism
stockholm syndrome
I can only think of it as troll hate. Because I can't imagine someone is legitimately that much of a fan of Windows or MacOS.
