False. These are the categories where doom 2 still reigns unparalleled. Especially the enemy variety. The vanilla maps of doom 2 are simply bad, but luckily the community has made thousands of incredibly good maps to play doom 2 on.
This was the answer to "Doom peaked with Knee-Deep in the Dead"
Then it’s the only classic shooter you’ve ever played. Doom II is good for the first 13 levels then its quality drops off a cliff. Do yourself a favor and play any High quality mod pack for quake or vanilla Duke 3D, you’d probably jizz ur pants
Doom II quality is consistent, unlike Doom 1 where it's Romero maps which look great but are piss easy or Sandy maps which are interesting to play but look like ass. Doom II has more even quality and map designers learned from each other a lot. Even gimmick maps are good for change of pace and there are not many of them >inb4 filtered by Chasm
In that case you're a gay >vanilla Duke 3D
This is my favorite shooter, thanks.
>The vanilla maps of doom 2 are simply bad because some gays managed to make better maps 30 years later
Cringe.
Doom 2 had the best maps in a fps until Duke Nukem 3D
Duke has its own share of shitty maps. Shrapnel City episode to be exact, which starts with two good maps and then nosedives heavily. Great game overall though.
Wrong.
Shrapnel City has L.A. Rumble, Movie Set, Fahrenheit and Hotel Hell which all are very low on details, boxy city maps with samey brown walls, barely different from each other. Lunar Apocalypse maps are very detailed and have a lot of cool setpieces and secrets. It's basically KDITD among Duke 3D episodes.

No that's L.A. Meltdown. The entirety of Lunar Apocalypse maps are the same repetitive generic space station interiors. It's the worst episode of any FPS I've ever played and almost made me give up on Duke3D
Actually feel like doom 2 plods a bit compared to doom 1. Now if you consider the entire doom 2 ecosystem when you purchase a copy of it? Absolutely a perfect game.

As much as I love Doom 1, its nostalgia is annoying. Doom 2 campaign is so much superior experience from start to finish, it's not funny. All levels have consistent look quality wise (except map10, which is a Doom 1 outtake), the map types are distributed evenly through the campaign, for a varied experience: regular maps, gimmick maps, sandboxy maps etc. Map designs themselves are more varied and interesting, including better traps and setpieces, because the designers were more experienced this time around. Play it from start to finish in one sitting instead of warping from map to map and you'll see what I mean. New enemy types add a lot to the gameplay too.
Doom 1 has all the coolest maps being in ep1 but no cacodemons, barons or plasma weapons to make them play more interesting. After ep1 ends, the new enemy types and weapons are introduced but map quality nosedives heavily.
Doom 1 is like a debut rock album with several good radio friendly singles in the beginning and the rest being shitty b-sides. Doom 2 is a masterfully curated and produced concept album, meant to be experienced as a whole from start to finish.
Doom 2 maps look and play like fan maps compared to how consistent and thought-through the ones in Doom were. When you play Doom 2 it feels like they were making shit up as they went along with no regard for scale or stylistic consistency. There were great maps in D2 but on the whole they were inferior. There's a reason Doom maps and Doom-style maps from D2 have remained an influence for subsequent mappers while the rest failed to catch on despite being made FOR Doom 2. And to address your analogy, Doom is a better example of a set of parts constituting a whole than Doom 2 where the progression throughout the game is neither here nor there
Basically this. Doom 2 mapset is just superior to Doom 1, which is very limited.

Only episode 1 and 2 are perfect.
There are no episodes in Doom 2, zoomie
Doom peaked with Knee-Deep in the Dead

Both Doom 2 and Duke3D have more shit maps than good ones.
The ultimate pleb take.
it had the prettiest maps that's for sure
/thread
It's telling that Doom 1 gays only played KDitD and not the whole game
Doom had good maps unlike Doom 2. Additions from D2 don't really compensate for that

literally a romhack of the first game. these hacks were too busy driving around their ferraris to make an actual sequel
>t.couldn't get past the 2nd or 3rd map.
I think i liked Plutonia more than Doom 2. But you kind of need to play 2 before it to appreciate it I guess
Two thirds of Doom 2 levels are garbage and the SSG is shit and boring to use.
Oh then fine. Play something else, then, like maybe Lemmings, Roller Coaster Tycoon, or Contra.
Oops wrong pic, I meant to post DOOM 1

Agree. Was good

nah
I never really understood the hatred for Doom 2, is it that people expected a fully-fledged sequel? We all know they would've hated that more.
I think Doom 2 level design sucks.
Agree. The first Doom was almost perfect, only brought down by some shitty Sandy's maps. Doom 2 was a big improvement in map design area.
