I could usually agree here, but BG3 really isn't a great game. Its a middling game at best.

The D&D ruleset in combat lets it down a lot. Also the die rolls are fricking obnoxious in both combat and dialogue.
It's a well acted game, great voice acting and cool scenarios, but as a whole it's not amazing.
People said all the same shit with Mass Effect 2 a decade ago. Is Mass Effect 2 really one of the best games of all time? Mechanically, no. Character-wise, yes.
People (myself included) just really like talking to well fleshed out party members that it blinds you to the shortcomings of the game.

Ass Effect 2 is just a third person shooter with dialogue options, it's not even remotely comparable
It's punchy and deadly. A lot more status effects you can't just walk off and more chances to be maimed or scarred. As a result, combat in the typical adventure is less frequent but more dangerous and protracted. It forces creative thinking between you and your boys: how to use your resources, the npcs you've met, and the environment to your advantage. That come-and-go dance would lend itself to a nicer gameplay flow, instead of combat being used to punctuate every sentence. I get that that's just how the series is but it's uh...not great!

Shoving and making a big fire is cool, but outside of blocking a door from time to time, that's really all you need.

VTMB writing is fantastic, but once again, the game itself sucks and even the most diehard VTMB fans would admit that (it's me, VTMB is one of my favorite games of all time)
BG3 has faults too but generally speaking, it does very well in almost all fields, which is unheard of for an RPG.
I've played every game you named and BG3 is the best of them. Not in terms of writing, but as a game and as a CRPG, BG3 is the best. Planescape had the best writing, but the combat was dull. VTMB is great and I'm currently replaying with Clan Quest mod, but again, it's not a perfect game and many aspects of it are worse than BG3. New Vegas unmodded is meh, modded is great and Dead Money is the best DLC.
There's no looming question the narrative poses from the outset. The idea of, "plz cure worm" from the outset is silly.
It would have been better if you started as someone who lived in The Grove and learned the Mind Flayer connections through the goblins naturally, picking up the party along the way.

Todd gives you all of that at once. And comparing it with the same visual novel BG3 3, which someone calls RPG by misunderstanding, you can see at once what is the difference between RPG and VNka.
In VNka you can not immediately go to Baldurs Gate (the city in honor of which the game is called), you can not constantly farm mobchiki and loot exp and upgrade 100 level, cap at 12, while the cap you get at the beginning of the 3rd act and then do not fricking get hours 40.
Combat only in turn based mode.
BG3 3 is closer to such a shit as Persona 5 - anime-VN, rather than to the mastodons of the RPG genre, such as Neverwinter, BG1-2, Morrowind, Obla, DAI.

CK3, Rimworld, New Vegas, Kingdom Come were all good but no game has the extra content polish BG3 has even with the bugs.
When I first played Fallout 1 my mind was blown but it was no BG3. I remember being impressed with the writing in Planescape Torment but it was still no BG3.
Because of the incredibly high review scores and the fact that everyone is praising it as a practically perfect game, i was very surprised to find that bg3 is actually more bug-filled and broken than any bethesda game has ever been.
If you check how things work, such as reading the combat log to see what is actually happening when you do things, you will notice that half of the abilities, spells, skills and equipment effects are bugged and either don't work at all or work wrong.
I'm on PS5 so i don't know if these are ps5 specific issues but i assume not.
Here are some examples just from the first 10 hours i've played:
Some equipment effects just don't trigger and others work weird. For example there's a helmet that gives you momentum at start of combat but it only works once and you have to keep re-equipping it to make it work again. There's a staff that has fly trap on its attacks, but when you have it the enemies also make saves against fly trap on all of your ranged and spell attacks, but nothing happens when they fail the saves.
All of the ground effect spells such as web and grease are broken, their DC is fixed at 11 or 12 regardless of the casters ability, making them practically useless.
The assassin is supposed to get his action points back at the start of combat, but he does not, making it a pointless class. The first character who initiates combat always gets their action points back regardless of class. Also, if you enable turn based mode before starting combat, all of your characters will get their action points back. This is a big one, because it means you can abuse turn based mode to give your entire party a free turn, completely breaking the game.
Most people probably care more about choosing the genitals on their characters and having sex with their party members than having functional mechanics?

I'm kinda getting why act 3 is weird now. When you happen upon stuff before you're supposed to, it gets really confusing. The murders thing seemed like a sidequest to me so I just went off track and killed Gortash and Raphael first. Then it comes to a dead stop for the murders again. It's just when you get to doors that are locked before you're supposed to, it gives really cryptic hints as if the solution is in the room or something. Could be my shitty attention span, but also it seems like act 3 as it's trying to wrap up the game has a lot more stuff that's absolutely necessary to do compared to the previous acts where you don't need to do everything and it just gives you a warning if you're underleveled.
I was already thinking about replaying the game but with how tedious act 3 is, I don't know. Maybe it will be better next time when I know what I'm doing.
I wish there was some sort of dungeon crawling continuous mode or something, where you level 5 times faster and it's randomly generated. Just fricking around with all the classes and abilities instead of going through the campaign again. I do want to replay some day with different choices, probably as dark urge, probably just not right away.

I don't really understand the hate for this game. I've never seen another game with this amount of detail put into how you can approach encounters. That alone makes the game impressive. Everything else is just a bonus.

PLEASE for the love of god pick up a video game that was released before 2010.
Because the only truly impressive thing is the mocap and the voice acting. Every other aspect of the game is extremely undercooked. This game basically shows that if you frontload all the good stuff and toss a boatload of money at it your game will be hailed and jerked off relentlessly even if the rest of the game is avarage at best.

Like what? The story is pretty great so far. Act 3 is abnormally long, but it's not like there's no content left. In fact, the problem is that there is TOO MUCH content in Act 3.
No, bg3 relies way too much on the main story, almost as if the game is centered entirely around it. Great rpgs should be sandboxes like mount and blade, kenshi, rimworld, ck3, victoria, modded skyrim, etc. Games that actually let you do whatever the hell you want and roleplay. There's way too much narrative in bg3 that it almost feels like a visual novel

Wyll ranks so high because he probably has the least complicated, and the most feel-good ending of all if you make him the duke. The ending cutscene with him in the cabin gives you plenty of good '' what next '' options, like wanting a big wedding or starting a family and having kids with him. All this while being the duke's consort is pretty dope. Gale on the other hand will always have Mystra lurking around, and Astarion can't go outside when the sun is shining, plus your dialogue options with him in the ending are pretty.. meh, plus Astarion feels somewhat non-chalant and less passionate about you unlike during the graveyard scene which is pretty weird. And Halsin just doesn't even allow you to stick around period.
But in terms of the whole package, Gale's romance hits the spot because you get to '' fix him '', get a good amount of content and an ending where he asks you to marry him and become part of his clan.
I hate how insanely boring the combat and rpg aspect is in this game. You could unironically easily beat this game never changing your equipment and just focussing on a handful of concentration spells on tactician mode. Leveling up and having 0 choice aside from a new spell to learn feels terrible as well.
The defining aspects of the genre is choice and custimization. Both things BG3 lack. Maybe you should play a different genre if you think this is acceptable.

Yes. If you've played any crpg ever before BG3 you would know that by comparison BG3 has almost no customization when it comes to building your characters. And theres almost no choices to be made on level ups. If you want to push the choice argument further I'd say this goes in the story as well. Typically moral choices in good crpgs have multiple routes you can follow. So if you decide to turn on a questgiver or group you'd get the oppertunity to join a different one. In BG3 the choice is basically, do you want content or none at all.

It's punchy and deadly. A lot more status effects you can't just walk off and more chances to be maimed or scarred. As a result, combat in the typical adventure is less frequent but more dangerous and protracted. It forces creative thinking between you and your boys: how to use your resources, the npcs you've met, and the environment to your advantage. That come-and-go dance would lend itself to a nicer gameplay flow, instead of combat being used to punctuate every sentence. I get that that's just how the series is but it's uh...not great!

It's literally one of the most reactive CRPGs I ever played, there's tons of different interactions.
I'll grant you that, though the bar is low. I suppose what I'm getting that is I would hope that less frequent combat encounters would lead to more creative combat encounters the way it does in the tabletop game. Shoving and making a big fire is cool, but outside of blocking a door from time to time, that's really all you need.
What you want is the full tabletop experience in a video game, that will never happen and it's not exclusive to D&D.

VTMB is great and I'm currently replaying with Clan Quest mod, but again, it's not a perfect game and many aspects of it are worse than BG3. New Vegas unmodded is meh, modded is great and Dead Money is the best DLC.

I'm going to try Witcher 3 and Valhelm next but they're action bullshit so I doubt I'll get into them. Most popular games I abandon in a few hours.
CK3, Rimworld, New Vegas, Kingdom Come were all good but no game has the extra content polish BG3 has even with the bugs.

When I first played Fallout 1 my mind was blown but it was no BG3. I remember being impressed with the writing in Planescape Torment but it was still no BG3.
This game is too buggy to be good
Because of the incredibly high review scores and the fact that everyone is praising it as a practically perfect game, i was very surprised to find that bg3 is actually more bug-filled and broken than any bethesda game has ever been.
If you check how things work, such as reading the combat log to see what is actually happening when you do things, you will notice that half of the abilities, spells, skills and equipment effects are bugged and either don't work at all or work wrong.
I'm on PS5 so i don't know if these are ps5 specific issues but i assume not.
Here are some examples just from the first 10 hours i've played:
Some equipment effects just don't trigger and others work weird. For example there's a helmet that gives you momentum at start of combat but it only works once and you have to keep re-equipping it to make it work again. There's a staff that has fly trap on its attacks, but when you have it the enemies also make saves against fly trap on all of your ranged and spell attacks, but nothing happens when they fail the saves.
All of the ground effect spells such as web and grease are broken, their DC is fixed at 11 or 12 regardless of the casters ability, making them practically useless.
The assassin is supposed to get his action points back at the start of combat, but he does not, making it a pointless class. The first character who initiates combat always gets their action points back regardless of class. Also, if you enable turn based mode before starting combat, all of your characters will get their action points back. This is a big one, because it means you can abuse turn based mode to give your entire party a free turn, completely breaking the game.
Most people probably care more about choosing the genitals on their characters and having sex with their party members than having functional mechanics?

Explain to me in your own words what makes Baldurs Gate 3 a superior game to one of the great cRPGs like NWN2 Mask of the Betrayer. Because as decent as BG3 was for a current year game, it's far from top tier. I would even rate Dragon Age Origins as being more fun at launch than BG3 was.

I'm kinda getting why act 3 is weird now. When you happen upon stuff before you're supposed to, it gets really confusing. The murders thing seemed like a sidequest to me so I just went off track and killed Gortash and Raphael first. Then it comes to a dead stop for the murders again. It's just when you get to doors that are locked before you're supposed to, it gives really cryptic hints as if the solution is in the room or something. Could be my shitty attention span, but also it seems like act 3 as it's trying to wrap up the game has a lot more stuff that's absolutely necessary to do compared to the previous acts where you don't need to do everything and it just gives you a warning if you're underleveled.

I wish there was some sort of dungeon crawling continuous mode or something, where you level 5 times faster and it's randomly generated. Can you post a few that are on the same level? I've only played Fallout 1 and 2 in terms of CRPGs and this game made those feels like a puddle.
Because the only truly impressive thing is the mocap and the voice acting. Every other aspect of the game is extremely undercooked. This game basically shows that if you frontload all the good stuff and toss a boatload of money at it your game will be hailed and jerked off relentlessly even if the rest of the game is avarage at best.

No, bg3 relies way too much on the main story, almost as if the game is centered entirely around it. Great rpgs should be sandboxes like mount and blade, kenshi, rimworld, ck3, victoria, modded skyrim, etc. Games that actually let you do whatever the hell you want and roleplay. Wyll ranks so high because he probably has the least complicated, and the most feel-good ending of all if you make him the duke. The ending cutscene with him in the cabin gives you plenty of good '' what next '' options, like wanting a big wedding or starting a family and having kids with him. All this while being the duke's consort is pretty dope. Gale on the other hand will always have Mystra lurking around, and Astarion can't go outside when the sun is shining, plus your dialogue options with him in the ending are pretty.. meh, plus Astarion feels somewhat non-chalant and less passionate about you unlike during the graveyard scene which is pretty weird. And Halsin just doesn't even allow you to stick around period.
But in terms of the whole package, Gale's romance hits the spot because you get to '' fix him '', get a good amount of content and an ending where he asks you to marry him and become part of his clan.
I mean that's great for you gay-anon. I have no intention of doing the gay shit, but it was interesting to see they did so much with so little.
3 years of early access with the only people playing being those that LOVE that genre of game, so they had a huge data set to exploit.
I hate how insanely boring the combat and rpg aspect is in this game. You could unironically easily beat this game never changing your equipment and just focussing on a handful of concentration spells on tactician mode. Leveling up and having 0 choice aside from a new spell to learn feels terrible as well.
It's ok if its not the genre for you, just play something else.

Yes. If you've played any crpg ever before BG3 you would know that by comparison BG3 has almost no customization when it comes to building your characters. And theres almost no choices to be made on level ups. If you want to push the choice argument further I'd say this goes in the story as well. Typically moral choices in good crpgs have multiple routes you can follow. So if you decide to turn on a questgiver or group you'd get the oppertunity to join a different one. In BG3 the choice is basically, do you want content or none at all.

Darkness. Can't be ranged attacked and enemies don't enter it. You run out the edge of darkness to shoot and then run back in. Or if you have Devils Sight, you just shoot out of it.
I agree martials are far more powerful in general, in this game. But you're overstating the uselessness of magic users. Especially when you get enough camping supplies to long rest between every major fight. Even 5th and 6th level spells are already overpowered as all shit.

That's why I personally set myself a limit of no more than 5 rests for 1 act, no more than 3 rests for the 2nd act and no more than 5 rests for the 3rd act.
