How does being in a hurry have any relevance to this situation. Telling Clive about Ultima would probably be a better use of his time than anything else. Also his lack of surprise indicates he already knew Clive was alive even then. Even after sealing the ultima from the one crystal he continues to avoid clive for zero fricking reason.

To be fair status effects were mostly used on you rather than you using it on enemies. MAYBE the oil debuff in XII, but that's it.
Anon here's how combat works:
It's like an even more limited version of Hogwarts Legacy combat. You hit square over and over and over again until your specials/magic can be used and then you hit L2 to switch to a different magic set with other specials separate cooldown timers.
That's it. Anything flashy is context sensitive.
Like if you're wailing on a mob and they're near death it's best to stop mashing square for a half second and then your character will just do a finishing blow for you saving you some time you'll never get back from this moron game.
You dodge gud, you win pretty much. Or just okay. If you dodge gud you'll barely touch your healing potions at all and the game throws them at you.
It's about as mindless as a dev can make it without making the game playing itself, which is also a thing you can do by applying auto battle rings the game just gives to you even in the demo.

Joshua was trying to keep a low profile because Ultima + The Undying secrecy. It also serves as a plot device, having the mysterious dominant of fire being a hooded man so you can have multiple "plot twists". But even so, hooded Joshua is different

I haven't beat the game but there are two, the robes Joshua wears as Margrace are slightly different from the one in the prologue, who goes into Phoenix Gate first and is there at the Iron Dominion crystal
But Clive thinks Joshua is the figure he say at Pheonix Gate when he sees him again in the Pheonix Gate sanctum.

Honestly, I get it. The writings aimed at adults which is nice after the abortion that was the last fire emblem. It also references some philosophical ideas without being heavy handed. I enjoyed the characters and their problems.
If only the gameplay was better and the boss fights in the second half stayed as fun as in the first half.
