It's a good game and a unique experience but a little overrated by people who want to be cool and not say FF6 or Chrono Trigger are their favorite JRPG. I call it Chrono Cross syndrome.

The remake is pretty good, imo. Adds a very small amount of new content and adjusts the super easy and super hard parts to be a bit more even. The presentation is great.

Disagree, LAL is underrated because the phenomena you describe is correct, but those gays always cite secret of mana instead of LAL

play the og version if you play it in japanese bc the ethical department rewrote some "problematic" dialogues.

anyway when it comes to square soft games the og games are always superior.

That's really dumb, man, but I'll give you credit for not recommending the Aeon Genesis translation.

unfinished? whats that narrative. its totally a "finished" game. also its polished as hell. live a live is a typical late snes game that came out with chrono trigger and gunhazard. they have fricking beautiful dot graphics and animations, and its nothing but the apex of pixel art.

          Anonymous

          >It's totally finished.
Not according to Tokita, it wasn't. He talked about how they were really crunched to get it out in time and wishes they got a bit longer with it.
          >It's so polished.
Yeah, so much so that they weren't able to finish the HUD in time for launch, Akira's chapter has totally whack balance, the item synthesis system came out simpler than they wanted, etc.

I like the SNES version, but the remaster adds a lot of little touches and tweaks that make it shine, and even it was at the mercy of deadlines (Tokita said in a Famitsu interview that the remaster is only as polished as it is because the pandemic gave them an extra year of dev time).

creators always say that afterwards. you can take it at its face value but literally many creators in every entertainment genre say like "we couldnt have enough time to totally sophisticate it" but its just their sentiments about their own work or just a marketing trick for remakes. unless it has crucial bugs or actual unfinished part like a plot stops in the middle of main story, you cant say its unfinished.

hd remakes of retro games always have awkward enlarged parts instead of having shiny graphics. ofc some people love "the modern version" but it doesnt change the fact that the snes graphics are beautiful as frick.

The remake is solid and generally improves the game all around so Squeenix had to frick it up by censoring the hell out of it and the localisation being terrible all around. Pick the version based on how much this matters to do you and understand that homosexuals like are massively downplaying the extent of the butchering.

          >Censoring the hell out of it.
Even when people tried their damnedest to turn this into a culture war thing, the best they could manage was one line in China, three lines in Near Future, and two lines in Wild West. You're really overplaying it. Nobody's going to have a worse time because of it. The most egregious one is Wild West, and even then it's nothing more than "Huh! Dumb that they felt the need to rewrite that."

Telling people to not play the better version because of this shit is ridiculous. Just look up the changes before or after you play it.

Why do you lie? There are dozens of examples of censorship in Near Future alone. And you focus in on censorship and ignore the problem being how fricking bad the localisation is in general even beyond the censorship.

It's such an abominable butchering that you wouldn't dare to tell anon that it consists of
          >An old man calling his pupil a strong girl instead of saying frowning will make her face ugly.
          >Removing two instances of a macho guy saying a woman couldn't understand a man's spirit.
          >Stealing your foster mom's panties being changed to stealing her nest egg.
          >Cigars/Tequila/etc being changed to food and other drinks in the Wild West chapter.
          >A girl calling men cowards for not fighting being changed to say they've got no balls and she should do it for them.

          >the best they could manage was one line in China, three lines in Near Future, and two lines in Wild West.

So many dozens that you won't list any. Gotcha.
          >The localization is shit!
The only part I had issue with was China. Medieval is a bit too flowery but otherwise solid. The rest range from mediocre to great. Sure as hell better than the AG translation.

Something I never got around to making a comparison for is that in Japanese Lei always calls Shifu old man rather than by his title throughout the whole chapter, and the only time she does call him anything else is when she calls him by his title at the very end when he's dying. Since the localisation has her calling him Shifu the entire time, this change is once again lost.

Cube's narration in the far future chapter is also very simple and childlike in Japanese whereas in English it was rewritten to be flowery instead. I think that's everything I noted before getting sidetracked.

Anon, if you're the one cataloguing all these changes, why not work on a patch?

and then you got booty-blasted by the mere insinuation that the mass censorship and localisation rewrites are something that a person would even want to factor in to their decision of which version to play.

anyway when it comes to square soft games the og games are always superior.

my mistake. If that's the case, yeah, JP remake is the best option.

And yeah, I hear you about that. Even native PC games with the whole directory out in the open can be a pain.

Not that anon, but it sounds like you're backpeddling.

I've been consistent. Imperial China is the only chapter I think actually suffers. The others range from mediocre to actually good (Distant Future probably got the best treatment).

The game has a HUD that actually explains what moves do, what statuses do, and what attacks are strong/weak to enemies.
A good chunk of the game got its balance tweaked. The original was all over the place. Easy sections have been made harder and harder sections were toned down a bit.
The new spritework is much better than the original, which was below par for a late Squaresoft release.
Several small presentation touches have been added. New assets or camera pans to really sell sequences that were a bit weak originally. There's one or two places I prefer the SNES version, but it's much more upgrade than downgrade.
Some annoying aspects of 100%ing the game were made less punishing, like giving you multiple chances to learn moves from bosses in the wrestling chapter.
One of the endings originally cut straight to credits, now it has a denouement that lightly hints how you get another ending.
And additional "true" ending was added if you act as the game's themes would suggest you should. It just adds an extra boss and a bit more closure.

Also, it made post game secrets less of a grindy b***h to get, added a tip glossary for when you come back after a long break, lets you replay chapters individually instead of restarting the game, and a couple other little things.

There's massive balancing issues where some of the scenarios are piss easy and others are borderline impossible unless you do everything perfectly correct (ie use a guide).

I played it and really enjoyed it. I didn't play the original nor do I speak Japanese so I can't comment on the authenticity of the localisation, but I thought it was generally well written, which may speak more to the strengths of the base writing. That said I particularly liked the ye Olde English sections, which I doubt could be brought over 1:1, so I think the localisers may have done a good job?

Speaking of, why do JRPGs do ye Olde English Shakespeare shit so much better than western RPGs? Since like Dragon's Dogma I feel like JRPGs have been really good at nailing a certain type of English with archaic words/phrases that western RPGs never touch. I've been noticing it more and more in other games (playing Triangle Strategy and everyone talks like that one Live A Live chapter). Makes me wonder if it's just the same people from DD since working on games in the past 10 years
