      >How the hell a diary counts as armor is the real question.
That's possibly the dumbest part, they censor it but they don't change it into an item instead. With the context, finding the diary in the wardrobe and then it being an armour piece instead of an item just tips you off that something's wrong. And it's not like it has value as armour anyway since it has worse defence than your starting gear. Feels like this was a last minute change.

Are you seriously asking why a sentimental item would serve as protection in a Spaghetti Western?

Have you ever consumed media outside of video games? This is one of the oldest shootout cliches around.

The cliche was literally any emotionally charged, sentimental item with heft or density. Hence watches, hence diaries, hence locket with photo of family, etc. The cliche was so globally recognized that JJBA did a goof on it with Jotaro being saved from a knife to the heart by his volumes of Weekly Shonen Jump (since he loves it more than anything) back in the early 90s.

Caveman is a simple story, but it's a good starting chapter as it's pretty much just a straight forward chapter with no gimmicks beyond the crafting. Plus even some secret stuff.

I started with it too and I think it's not a great chapter to start with. The gimmick of no dialogue and everything being expressed through gestures and emotes since they're cavemen is cool but I'd have preferred to start with a chapter that had actual dialogue.

        Anonymous

I think the only other chapters that work as someone's first chapter would either be Near Future or Kung Fu.
Kung Fu is still simple enough, has some combat throughout, and the only gimmick to learn is more about minmaxing than anything else.
Near Future is second or third chapter with the most consistent combat after Caveman and Ninja, and also doesn't really have any gimmicks beyond mind reading and some optional stuff.

well its either that or Gideon Zhi’s bullshit from the mid 2000’s. I know at least the Edo Japan chapter had some messed up lines in the fan translation.

            Anonymous

From what I remember the fan translation is mostly literal to a fault but also has some blatant mistranslations in the sense of failure to understand Japanese rather than intentional rewrites. But it could certainly also have rewrites that I didn't notice.

              Anonymous

i think its mostly misinterpretations and not understanding some of the more "nuanced" and vague lines.

For example, Masaru is not supposed to be saying his name here. It's supposed to be the guy challenging him from offscreen. It is a very understandable mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.

i'm not familiar with the game myself but either
            a) the character in question is underage, trying to strip any sort of sexual connotations
            b) the act of a male protagonist thumbing through a females garments is problematic (but somehow a diary is okay?)
            c) it was a genuine mistake that passed by qc (because again, it's just strange not actually offensive)

This is the best answer, and also the remake is basically shot for shot with the original just with overhauled visuals, so they didn't make any changes whatsoever to the events that let you acquire it.

Oh my fricking god, I have fallen for this TWICE now. I preorded Chrono Chross and this, assuming there would, of course, not be any censorship in the Japanese versions. Lo and behold, they're both fricking pozzed. Just frick my tight little boipucci. I think I'm done buying Square shit.

It's a weird change since Prehistory still ends with the implied fricking but you weren't going to buy the game anyway if this changed your mind.

      >you weren't going to buy the game anyway if this changed your mind
Missed the part literally in the post you quoted where I said I preordered the game. It's released, therefore it's shipped, therefore I bought the fricking game. God forbid someone have principles. I don't give a damn what troons do to the English slop for western players; messing with Japanese scripts like this is too far. Just saying I'll be careful about buying Square releases from now on if they're going to censor benign stuff like this.

Again, who fricking gives a shit other than you

Let's keep moving goalposts to excuse the censorship of old media. I know you can't help yourself and need to justify your desire to consoom, but self-censorship of this kind just shows a lack of integrity that shouldn't be blindly supported.

how is "nightie" to "diary" (yet somehow still a piece of armour) a censorship, slipperyslope schizo?
i'm more willing to write this off as negligence than anything

              Anonymous

Yes, I'm sure the devs of the original Japanese script just accidentally made a piece of clothing into a diary, complete with an item description and everything. I could cite just about anything as censorship and you'd still be here coping about it.

no i wouldn't. you see how this works, anon. you need to build a case of evidence that would lead someone to believe this is true. this however, is hardly compelling evidence.

                >a Japanese script change in a game from a publisher that also changed the Japanese script of ANOTHER recent re-released game (Chrono Cross) in order to remove references to "gendered language"
So I guess that was an oversight too? The pattern is obvious here. You're either being willfully obtuse or you don't pay attention to video games.

                Anonymous

you are being acutely dense if you somehow are trying to make this a case of guilt by association. a publisher is not a production team. you need to look at each case and make a proper evaluation and not allow your judgement to be clouded by bias.

like i said i'm willing to move on this if i am given more evidence.

for example, i find this to be pretty obnoxious

I started with a chapter that had actual dialogue and this is what I got. I guess I would've enjoyed the caveman chapter more since it's not like they can localise gestures. Right?

and negligent on the english side. but this does not further your accusation that the japanese side was censored as well.

Nothing I could show you could prove to you that the Japanese side was censored, because you're an EOP and can just claim ignorance. Sure, I could dig up that Chrono Cross screenshot, but you can't even read it. This isn't guilt by association you dumb frick, it's the same fricking party making similar script changes.

ah, but you fricked up anon. i asked for the evidence because, i'm very much -not- an EOP. i could proceed to post screenshots i have taken over the last 8 years of games i've played in japanese but that's not the crux of what we're discussing here, much in the same way you continue to bring up chrono cross.

'the same fricking party', again please demonstrate the staff list from both games and show the overlap for this to be true otherwise stop bringing up irrelevant bullshit.

i say all this as someone who is acutely familar with the troonyslations that have been occurring over the years. the integrity of source material is why i originally took up learning the language myself so many years ago.

You've not only displayed a complete misunderstanding of what a publisher's role is - particularly for their in-house IPs - but also a failure to read the Japanese script you claim to be able to. as to why this change was made, is not clear. as i've seen numerous times, it seems more negligent to me than an intention towards censorship. i asked you to provide more evidence suggesting that would lead me to believe that the original source material has been censored in the remake for BOTH japanese and english, as it "has" been in this screenshot. i'm not really interested in discussing this further if you cannot engage with this basic request.

Yes anon. And what 火炎瓶 actually means is molotov wienertail, because that's the name we have in the west for what the item is. No one calls a glass full of flammable liquid that you light and throw to make it explode "bottled fire", much like no one calls a movie a "projection picture".

That term was coined in 1940. So, is it a translation mistake or the translator sticking to the western theme? RDR calls them fire bottles too.

It's not a translation mistake, it's an anachronism. And you're complaining about an anachronism in a game that isn't even remotely attempting to be historically accurate.

The uninitiated don't know kanji enough to understand that there's no such thing as "Molotov wienertail" equivalent in Japanese and thus the translation team just did a direct translation of it. What's funny is that people are acting like it makes more sense for bourbon, tequila, cigar to be treated as items that heal people instead of the altered terms.
In a zainy game sort of way, it make complete sense but it's still funny to think that you heal from consuming cigars.

                >the literal translation is flame bottle
Yes ESL. Both are one and the same

It's still stupid because they weren't fricking invented till like World War 2 and even if the Wild West chapter was set during the near end of the wild west like 1890s, the only incendiary they could've used would have been shit like firecrackers, sticks of dynamite and sulphur smoke bombs (which were actually common at the time).
Yes I'm a spastic historical accuracy police sue me.

                Anonymous

It's not too unheard of for people setting fire to bottles of flammable liquid especially since this was the wild west where they really had to be creative but then again, most of them would never use it outside of its intended use as a drink because alcohol isn't dirt cheap, so I get what you mean. So yeah, Fire Bottle would have actually been historically more accurate but there's not really anything wrong with calling it a Molotov, both have basically the same meaning

I know you're probably some Hispanic weirdo in South America where consoom is the way of life, but when you start having standards you start seeing this shit as not acceptable.

two woman’s clothing items were changed to different items(applies to all versions). Dialogue is different in translations(it literally always is). Otherwise nothing seems toned down. I’d argue there’s more swearing now than in the fan translation, which is a surprise.

It's not a surprise though. troonyslators think characters saying "Frick" over and over is edgy and cool. Look how often Leon said it in the RE2 remake when I don't remember him saying anything like that in the original game. actually, it was the kings fault for starting live a live for making the winner of the tournment marry alethea when Streibough and Alethea had a relationship, but Oersted then had to third wheel into the relationship.

The king was a good judge of character, I wouldn't let my daughter marry that homosexual either.

but he resulted in streiborough's meltdown resulting in a chain of events leading up to Odio

it is possible that Odio was always a being separate from Oersted, remember that the demon lord Hash fought in the past was way different from gargoyle dude.

        the theory here would be

        >Oersted and Straybow get their duel
        >Straybow jealous becomes another vessel for Odio, and somehow (SOMEHOW being the keyword here, i know this is hard to believe things went THAT fast.) sets the kidnapping of Alicia up.
        >the tragedy happens
        >the moment Oersted gave into despair, it was when Odio jumped from Straybow's corpse to him.
        >in the remake, once Oersted was defeated, Odio threw a last gambit by doing what he did. but he didnt expected Oersted would regain his conscience at the last minute.

Why can't translators just do their jobs without unnecessary changes? Why do publishers need tailor their work for people that won't even consume their product? It's stupid that we've gotten to the point that racist depictions in media are muted, or outright removed--why can't the black hating antagonist say "Black person"? I know the counter arguments, but don't age ratings help to ensure that those impressionable people aren't viewing said media? These days I'm convinced that "uppity" would be seen as incredibly racist given its roots etc., etc. It's all so fricking tiresome.

anway, dude having doubts with japan chapter earlier in the morning here... i'm not sure what the frick just happened...

          >find the clone puppet puzzle
          >find some room guarded by 3 bucket head dudes
          >managed to discover how to beat the puppet puzzle with the 5 koban
          >'ok, so i have a decoy and theres those bucketheads there, so i guess that was pretty obvious.'
          >and so it was, the decoy fricks the bucketheads over, and managed to enter the room.
          >ITS THE FRICKING FINAL BOSS ROOM!

thank lord i DID managed to get the no-kill run, but still i'm still fricking confused.

              Anonymous

the fact that i just got to the ending so out of nowhere. i mean obviously a room guarded by some buckethead motherfrickers was gonna be important, but i didnt expected to be THAT important, as in 'the end of the story' important, if anything, i thought i was barely halfway thru.

how in the hell does a minor character from a short lasting game become so popular? it's like when you create something new for a game, it's a hit and suddenly merchandise appears.

  118. 2 years ago

Just beat the game. New final boss was cool. I'm glad it doesn't really change the story and just adds a bit of extra stuff to the climax. As much as I feel for Oersted, giving him a happy ending would spoil the themes of the story
