I watched a LP of the game like 10+ years ago, is the Ninja era the one where you can go pacifist/stealth or something? I remember it had a lot of optional stuff

They say you have 3 characters in this demo, each in different period. So is this a game where you pick 1 character and play till the end, or where you need to play with each character to proceed (to chapter 2?) with the game?

Based on the descriptions, you can play and reload on certain savespots if you decide to jump from chapter to chapter. The Knight chapter is missing, which I'm assuming is extreme endgame after you beat all 7

There are two special swords in that chapter, one you get for not killing anybody and the other you get for killing a super boss. There is a way to get both, you have to get in a room where a woman spams ghost, kill the Ghosts for exp (as they are Ghosts, it doesn't count for the killing counter) so you get stronger to fight the super boss.

That's the reward for not killing any women, before you get into the final fight of the chapter, a woman will appear and give you a useless item, if you wait in that room around 10 seconds she will come back, apologize, and give you the Medicine Box

          Not it wasn't you frick.
LAL has 8 separate genres, 8 independent stories that don't intersect at all until the end of the game.
OT is just different classes, and you start meeting other party members very early on.
OT is much closer to something like SaGa or Trials of Mana than LAL.

OT is badly planned hybrid of Romancing SaGa 1 (Some main characters are literally just edgy versions of main characters from RS1) and FF5, it has nothing to do with LaL.
Also Takashi Tokita, the man behind LaL, is a former SaGa team member, LaL in itself is largely inspired by SaGa because that's what Tokita worked on as a freshman, like Hiroshi Takai or Akihiko Matsui he's part of Kawazu's schoolboys.

OT knew what it wanted to be (8 independent stories with interweaving parties in a shared world), it just didn't work out.
OT wasn't trying to be like Live-A-Live, which is about hero stories in 8 separate mediums. They're going for something entirely different.

Also you won't hear the OT shitters complain about "NOT ENOUGH PARTY INTERACTION" in Live-A-Live. Because they're fundamentally going for different things. That's why the comparison between them is stupid. It's the same folk who kept comparing OT to FF6 because "many characters, also 2D sprites!"

          >OT knew what it wanted to be (8 independent stories with interweaving parties in a shared world), it just didn't work out.

LAL characters do interact in the final chapter, is minimal but is much better than OT non existent interactions relevant to the pkot. For frick sake, OT final chapter is built like a fricking sidequest, drops shitloads of revelations though text and the characters NEVER COMMENT ABOUT IT!

I'm not defending OT, it has loads of issue. I'm saying that OT and LAL were going for completely different things. That's why it's not a problem that LAL has no character interactions before the finale, but it's a major problem for OT.

              Anonymous

LAL not having character interactions between the 7 heroes makes sense because their chapters are self contained (and they do interact with other characters in their respective chapters), OT put everyone together from the beginning and aside some obscure and irrelevant to the plot cafe conversations they never fricking interact.

                Yes, we are agreeing.

Live-A-Live isn't really proper NTR because Alicia was never actually in a relationship with Oersted to begin with. All the feelings of betrayal are there but believing that she was his ally was just his own delusion.

          Anonymous

You people are so obsessed with NTR and cuckshit that you deluded yourselves into thinking that was all the Oersted shit was about, when it it was merely the straw that broke the camel's back if anything, and like said, it's only even a romantic interest if you choose to interpret it that way as the player of a silent protagonist. It isn't really explicitly stated as love otherwise.

What set the dude off was simply having every single last thing he had in life ripped away from him through the shittiest events that could be orchestrated. He has no home to go to, the whole population wants him dead, every last ally he had has been killed, or in Straybow's case fricking plotted this living hell for him to begin with. After everything seems lost to him, he remembers the words Alicia had for him and how she believed in him and was still waiting to be rescued. If he could just have that last little thing to cling onto, he could try and find some kind of purpose in living. But then she kills herself after betraying his feelings of trust, and that was it. He had nothing left to live for anymore. Everything he ever held dear and cherished in life was destroyed or turned against him and there wasn't a single soul left who he could turn to for console. This is what the dude fricking snapped and became the next Demon Lord over. Not losing a woman, but simply losing every last ounce of faith and trust he ever had in humanity over the absolute conga line of bullshit he got put through.

Yeah I think the whole focus on 'OMG NTR' is just the usual Ganker obsession with NTR in general. Romance is a very vague part of the entire ordeal. Oersted was probably more effected by Streibow's actions and words more than anything.

So, just did the ninja chapter, it ends if you go north of the area the storehouse key is in, where the castle's main building is.
Everywhere else is fair game, which is a massive area in itself.
Cube's chapter ends after Kirk dies, but before he's recovered.
The China chapter ends roughly around when all the apprentices are recruited.

I didn't notice because I'm grinding the tigers. I wonder what's the level cap

        Anonymous

Broadly speaking 99. But you only need to be like level 10 - 12 for most combat chapters to be beaten easily, and the chapter "soft cap" is around 20, after that unless they greatly lower the exp to level curb it's going to take a lot longer between levels until the final chaper. Even then the exp to get to 20 is fairly high for most chapters.

Will I enjoy Live Alive if I loved SaGa Frontier Remastered?

      Anonymous

You can see some surface similarities in game design choices, but overall it's not really like Frontier, every character story is fully self contained and with many different gimmicks, all the stories are also much more bite sized than Frontier, the average story takes one hour at best to go through, Masaru's story is barely even 20 minutes long for instance.
There's some stories, like Oboro's or Sundown Kid which can be completed in different ways, but other stories like Akira's or Pogo's are fully linear and at best you'll be missing out an optional boss.
And of course the gameplay's completely different, though again there are some vague similarities here and there, Tokita's one of Kawazu's alumni so if you like games with more niche choices in terms of game design you'd probably still enjoy LaL overall.

        Anonymous

        >Masaru's story is barely even 20 minutes
Unless you're trying to get all the moves, in which case you'll triple that with just trying to get Asia to use something other than bite.

Why do they keep funding shit like this. Even Nintendo isn't stupid enough to waste money on earthbound because even though people say they love it they won't actually buy the shit. Live a live was cool because of it's multiple stories in one game but it used the same combat for every single one and I mean come on it really isn't that great. Why fund a full remaster of it to sell ten copies.

How were the jokes in the original? In this demo, you can peep on two guys speaking suggestively in the ninja chapter, and there are girls in kimonos here and there in the mansion. There's a joke where a guy keeps spinning one by the kimono belt and you can join in or get spun yourself.

The fat disciple in the China chapter laments being fat, at least in his Japanese voice acting. I'm not playing with English voices nor text so I don't know if they changed it there.

I don't think any of these stories are long enough to warrant a demo that saves your progress. Probably would have been better to do a demo with Cowboy and Modern Day in their complete form to let you get a taste of exploration and combat. Especially since they're two of the shorter stories so they make for good demos.

Your character’s love interest literally marries the other guy in the Church she promised to marry you in as a child, and there’s jokes about you listening to her moaning while they frick. There’s even a joke about your character staying celibate while the rest of the party (including the kid character) has sex, so you can stay true to her, before the big reveal.

It’s all 1:1 NTR gameplay stuff, just with the sex scenes removed. It’s absolutely insane that it exists and was anywhere near mainstream

I just played all three chapters, I fricking knew they'd end the far future one the instant shit started hitting the fan. Great atmosphere though.

I have a couple questiions about the other two chapters. In Imperial China, I was only able to find five herbs to cure the sick old people but there were six of them, did I just somehow miss one in the forest or is there another source, like a random drop from the tigers?

As for Edo Twilight, I chose not to kill any enemy, but what about those optional bosses like the spirit lady and the five ninja squad? Am I forced to just avoid them and not get those treasure chests if I go pacifist? I'm also wondering if you can beat the fight you get if you decide to abandon the mission at the start and get a different ending.

      Anonymous

If I remember correctly one of the sick people was just hungry. As for what doesn't count as a kill it's just ghosts, robots, and mandatory bosses.

As the other anon said, one of the sick is actually just hungry. It's the elderly woman near the bottom of the street.
You can feed her a bun, but she doesn't actually give you anything.

        >In Imperial China, I was only able to find five herbs to cure the sick old people but there were six of them, did I just somehow miss one in the forest or is there another source, like a random drop from the tigers?
They aren't sick, they are hungry. Use a food item.

Despite there being 6 sick people only 5 will actually accept the herbs (this includes Yuan's grandma).
In Edo Twilight you can farm spirits since they don't count towards your killcount, but I believe killing the spirit lady does, same goes for the Ninja Five (the pacifist guide for the original advises to completely ignore that room).

Thanks. Guess I'll leave stuff like that for the full game, I'm getting it at launch anyway.

Western doesn't really have a good 'demo stops here' point because there's only three fights in it. If you cut the demo before the final showdown it'd just be annoying.
I'd say if they were going to pick a chapter besides Ninja, it should've been Caveman. It's the simplest while also being one of the longer ones with a lot of combat. You could cut it probably after Bel gets kidnapped.

I've wanted to play Live A Live for a while now and feel this version would be the perfect excuse to finally do it for the first time. Main question I have for fans of the game is if it seems like a good conversion of the original based off the demo. This remake looks fantastic from an outsider's perspective, but if there's significant flaws or negative changes I can always just play the fan translation.

      Anonymous

I said it to another anon in another thread, but I'd recommend playing the fan translation anyway. I think the remake looks fricking great, game I'm most excited for this year, but playing the fan translation will get you more "into" the conversation, if that's what you're looking for.
If you don't particularly care, that's fine too. Just hold out for the remake. But a lot of discussion is going to be about the differences between the two, so being able to recognize is definitely recommended. At the very least, listen to the OG's soundtrack if nothing else. The remake tracks so far sound fricking great, but the OG still holds up after all this time.

if you don't want to take a fricking day to track down sundown, pick him as your player character

      Anonymous

Max party of 4 and you'll have to talk to a character to switch them into your party.
If you want Sundown, then pick him as your leader, or at least make sure you keep him in the party after you do recruit him.
As for recommandations? Really, use whoever you like best. You only need to swap around characters for their specific character dungeon, otherwise it's doable with all of them.
Only really Akira could be considered a 'bad' party member and even then you can still manage with him, especially if they've buffed him in this remake.

      Anonymous

In the original, pick oboro as your main since he runs faster than everyone else, idk if this will be true in the remake, I used him (with his secret boss gear), Li, Cube, and Masaru, but masaru was meh for the final boss, Li, Oboro and Cube were great throughout though, I also used Sundown for a while, he was pretty good

        Anonymous

Sundown has a gun. Of course he's good.

          Anonymous

The problem i was having with using him was that I had grinded Oboro to do his secret boss so he was already super strong and Sundown's damage wasn't completely making up for his frailty, but he was still pretty fun for a while

Not great, not bad. Visually impressive backdrops, not as good prop/background sprites-turned-models, mediocre lighting, okay character sprites that turn fricking blank when they're overly bloomed/shined on.

Gameplay itself is smoother, music's nice. There's a lot of QoL shit, like how the ship has a minimap and a full map of the entire craft. There's also skipping which is useful... if not for the autosave feature. Voice acting is unwanted but present. There's loading screens but it loads so fast that the tooltip shit is useless. Text legible but menu GUI is half-assed.

Overall a decent remaster job but lighting's ficked. Not worth $50, but the fact that it exists is nice considering it was JP only for a long ass time.
Hopefully the port doesn't lose the good shit in the Knight's Era.
