the mandates were very much a thing but it's obvious that ian's been burned out for a while and his fans kept using the mandates as a shield to defend his sloppy and stale writing because they put him on this pedestal as some god-tier writer when he really isn't, he was just the most solid writer sonic has gotten which isn't exactly a high bar.
i will say i do have a bit more faith in this just because generally i think ian's better at adapting pre-exisiting story beats and characters as opposed to some of his more original ideas, so if he's just going to be retelling shadow's backstory i think it'll be fine.

The bits from the trailer look pretty much the same. As long as they don't frick anything up, I guess it'll be nice to have pre-rendered cutscenes that aren't crunched to shit, and not needing mods to fix 50 different potential issues you can run into on PC.

I liked the tone Frontiers was going for, but story-wise I think Adventure and Unleashed are the perfect Sonic games in terms of story. Serious, but not too serious that there isn't levity here or there.
Frontiers suffered from the no budget zone for cutscenes so most of them looked extremely static. Maybe now that Frontiers was a big success and Generations 1.5 has some hype behind we'll get a decent budget for Sonic games again.
Yeah the script was good but the cutscene direction left a lot to be desired outside of the ones that set up action scenes. I'm pretty sure Sonic Team got raises due to Frontiers' success but don't quite me on that.

He's never "won" doing so. It's a power boost but not a press to win button.
He did the same thing in sonic x season 3 when he fought knuckles and while shadow did win, they made it clear shadow was fricking hurting from taking them off. The inhibitor rings aren't a push to win button solely because taking them off makes him much more powerful, but he wears out significantly more quickly as a nerf that he can't use all the time.

As someone who has 100% it twice and played on the highest difficulty, yes. It has jank but most of it is patched out by now and there has never been a greater spin dash in Sonic. Period.
frontiers is super fun if you memorize every single trickable polygon in the game and play it like sonic tony hawk, especially the action challenges

It's not tied to physics at all. It's literally a non-stop boost with a moon jump code on launch. You stop holding boost I mean spindash for even half a second and all your speed is lost and you drop like a rock. That's not physics.
