If you want a good female character, you write a good character that happens to be female.

The problem there arises in the fact that you can TELL that a cartoon character is female or black just by looking at them. It never needs to be mentioned. If a character is gay, they either have to literally say that they're gay or be shown fricking another man. If the character is trans, they have to be drawn as trans looking, talk about their HRT, or be shown whipping out their wiener and helicoptering it around. Obviously I'm being hyperbolic, but there's really no good way to bring it up without it coming off as incredibly pandering or disingenuous. It's either treating your viewers like morons, or trying to score virtue points from people who wouldn't even watch your cartoon otherwise.

You are correct in saying that it's hard to establish a given character to be gay without being explicit about it. But there is nothing wrong with that when it's a tool used sparingly and deliberately.
Otherwise, you will get the repeat of the whole Dumbledore fiasco when people assumed he was straight because that's the norm, so when it was revealed that he's not - everyone was shocked and there was a huge outrage.
The character being gay not mattering now doesn't mean it will never matter. It is completely fine to establish things like this so you're open about the viewpoint you are trying to show and don't create false expectations.
The dumbledore thing isn't a good example because rowling added a bunch of weird fricked up lore after the books were done. Have you ever seen the cartoon gravity falls? at the very end of the very last episode, the two cops say that they're in love, but it wasn't entirely unfounded, because throughout the series, the white cop keeps making funny jokes and the black cop would laugh and say things like "you're the one light in a dark world". The whole time you think he's just patronizing him, but at the end they confirm that they're just lovers. It wasn't important, it didn't detract from anything, and most of all it didn't just come out of nowhere, unlike the ending of Korra, where those characters didn't even have chemistry as friends.

If a character is gay, they either have to literally say that they're gay or be shown fricking another man. If the character is trans, they have to be drawn as trans looking, talk about their HRT, or be shown whipping out their wiener and helicoptering it around. Obviously I'm being hyperbolic, but there's really no good way to bring it up without it coming off as incredibly pandering or disingenuous. It's either treating your viewers like morons, or trying to score virtue points from people who wouldn't even watch your cartoon otherwise.

You are correct in saying that it's hard to establish a given character to be gay without being explicit about it. But there is nothing wrong with that when it's a tool used sparingly and deliberately.
Otherwise, you will get the repeat of the whole Dumbledore fiasco when people assumed he was straight because that's the norm, so when it was revealed that he's not - everyone was shocked and there was a huge outrage.
The character being gay not mattering now doesn't mean it will never matter. It is completely fine to establish things like this so you're open about the viewpoint you are trying to show and don't create false expectations.
The dumbledore thing isn't a good example because rowling added a bunch of weird fricked up lore after the books were done. Have you ever seen the cartoon gravity falls? at the very end of the very last episode, the two cops say that they're in love, but it wasn't entirely unfounded, because throughout the series, the white cop keeps making funny jokes and the black cop would laugh and say things like "you're the one light in a dark world". The whole time you think he's just patronizing him, but at the end they confirm that they're just lovers. It wasn't important, it didn't detract from anything, and most of all it didn't just come out of nowhere, unlike the ending of Korra, where those characters didn't even have chemistry as friends.
