Bethesda is a small indie game studio
    Please forgive

Honestly, they are a pretty small studio. Skyrim and Fallout 4 were only worked on by around 120 developers. Bethesda Game Studios only has 450 employees

        Anonymous

They outsource the bulk of their art. Anyone inhouse is a lead or a designer.

          Anonymous

Yeah, there were claims that Starfield was worked on by around 500+ devs, but It's probably safe to assume that only around 200 were official Bethesda employees.

There has always been a gap between concept art and the final result. This says nothing.

that is clearly unfinished placeholder because they had to focus on more important things, OP is deliberately designed that way even though the concept art is completely different in scale..
also, where in the game can I find these planets? after roughly 30 hours in the game I've only found mild earth-like environments and barren wastelands

        Anonymous

all those concepts look great but the problem is that for us to have planets that actually look like that they'd have to ditch procedurally generated bull shit. Every planet is divided between Hills, Swamps, mountains, and desert I think. Every time you click somewhere to land there's a chance it will be one of those or a combination of two or even 3 of them. It's impossible to have foto real graphics that look as good as the concept while using procedural stuff. That only works with games like minecraft.

          >It's impossible to have foto real graphics that look as good as the concept while using procedural stuff

Well they clearly couldn't moron, we know from the recent leaks that they had infinite money basically after being bought by Microsoft which allowed them to delay the game for 2 years basically internally then another year to the public. If they didn't do it, it can't be done.

they should have went with fewer handcrafted planets than the bland procgen shit we got

I mean they did do that but only in New Atlantis I think, it's the only big city that you can walk out without a cut scene and explore the outside. It's all neatly placed and only starts being procgen after 5k units or something like that, kliksphilip made a great video about it.

It was. It was an RPG with a proper story until Keanu Reeves came aboard and the whole game became a linear shooter all about him.

Development can be a meeting on a sunday to brainstorm and decide how to proceed after the teaser. Then only meeting a month later to decide what to work on first because they were busy working on the wither games. Oh now 3 months passed... Why do you Black folk think that "being in development" means they are getting shit done every single day? we literally know they only started getting shit done in Cyberpunk 2-3 years before the game came out. "in development" can literally mean "yeah I talked to josh the other day during lunch about that idea I had for that one mechanic he thinks we should do it, add it to the list. cool we'll get to it in 4 months once we're done with witcher 3 dlc"

Even though I like what the game ended up being more than what was shown here, I think it would've been the smarter move to stick to the "Mass Effect" style of gameplay/RPG mechanics if it had come out around that time period. This would've been far more in their line of experience and could've focused more on the RPG mechanics with simple cover shooter combat (mix in some cuh-razy moves for good measure) and more linear level design.
It wouldn't have blown people away, but it could've easily carried itself on good writing and still would've become some people's favorite game ever, I'm sure. The game they made was close to being amazing, but they got wienery with The Witcher 3's success and took on a project far too ambitious for pretty much any studio but Rockstar for the sort of expectations it was setting.

There are small villages larger than your average Bethesda city.
And unlike their old works, Starfield has very little interactivity (no store schedules, few npc schedules and what are there are lacking, not a lot to loot, etc)

Neon was actually disappointing, but I was expecting such. Just a normal street in lonely space with lighty signs to fool you that it's some amazing place. Ryujin sucked. The club sucked. They all suck.

In fact Neon looks like they took Goodneighbor and drew it out. Even Akila looks like they mashed Fallout 4's old fort location & Diamond City.

It's almost kinda sad because you see so much love and creativity in the concept art, but they're stuck with a shit engine they probably have to spend more time bug fixing/rewriting than make the games how they want to make em.
The plus side is that the engine is one of the best for modding, but now they're glued to it for that reason as well.

and yes, I'm aware that NV was developed by Obsidian, I'm just making a general statement about the engine and its limitations.

This concept art never made much sense anyway. The strip is supposed to not look like a post apocalyptic mess of a city at all, that's what sets it apart. Not to say what is in the game was good, but the art here doesn't really fit the story.

  16. 8 months ago
    Anonymous

That's pretty close for vidya concept art. I liked Neon a lot visually, it just needed to be grittier with a lot more stuff to do. They should've scrapped landing on planets entirely except for handmade POI, then invested all the saved time into fleshing out the cities and handcrafted outposts/dungeons more.

Concept art is ALWAYS better than implementation.

I don't think I've ever seen concept art of something and thought that it looked worse than what we ended up getting. This isn't defending Bethesda or anything, I just think concept art in general is really cool and usually very well done as it's built as a concept so it really has to evoke a certain feeling.

The only exception I can think of is Bloodborne. They nailed the look of the concept art in game.

The concept art for Dishonored actually comes pretty close to the in-game interpretation. It's probably the only game I can think of that comes as close as it does though.

What I don't understand is that the one critique Bethesda must have heard more than any other is that fast travelling sucks the life out of their games and ruins exploration. And then the standard response is, "Well don't use it if you don't like it".

And then they go and make a game where fast travel is the ONLY way to get around and a completely integral part of the game. You're standing on New Atlantis. Press M, press L, press X, now you're standing on Uranus IX-b. Absolutely minimal involvement on your part, but even if you had bothered to get in your ship the outcome would have been the exact same and the 2-3 extra steps would have added no enjoyment.
How the frick do you end up designing a game like this, where it actively wants the player to stop caring.

I don't get this shit, is it so hard for devs to not put fart fumes everywhere nowadays? That's not just a Starfield issue, I've seen this phenomenon happening to many games.
