>localiser of pic related calls Kojima a hack that barely writes above fanfic level
>makes massive translation blunders missing the nuance of several important lines making the games message more unclear
>straight up removes several lines and replaces lines with her own lines (“To the ghosts of our former government” gets changed to “farewell” for example)
>constantly whines in interviews and social media on how Kojima is a hack and that she saved a bad script
This game seriously needs a new translation, the botch job Kaku made is borderline criminal but no one talks about it. Say what you want about Blausteins changes to the script for MGS1 but most of his changes where made to make the dialogue seem more natural in English, Kaku straight up didn’t know what she was doing.

Not only this but the casting in the English version is fricked too. In the Japanese version Olga shares the same VA as Meryl in MGS1 and when Olga takes on the role of the cyborg ninja, whenever she quotes MGS1 they just straight up replay voice clips from MGS1 and in a few instances had Grey Fox’s Japanese VA come back to do some new lines. Similarly Solidus and Solid Snake shares the same VA. These were all very deliberate decisions.

Why would Mr. X sound like Frank, though? Gray Fox had no voice modulator, he opened his helmet and sounded the same.

You’re thinking about it too literally. It’s supposed to be a post-modern mindfrick that makes you question what’s actually going on. The Japanese version having the ninja sound like Grey Fox is deliberately trying to invoke the feeling of the first game, down to straight up reusing voice lines instead of recording new ones. It’s supposed to feel like reality is caving in on Raiden, which is why the Arsenal Gear level is supposed to look like an unfinished level floating in the void surrounded by computer code, until Snake snaps him back to reality in the end.

MGS2 is controversial for a reason, if you want something straightforward just skip to Bibo saga and try to ignore Raidonovich
But don't play MGS4 because its the most REMEMBAH? game in the series and unlike MGS2 its just dumb fanservice and all around a worthless game.

MGS4 was also a game Kojima straight up didn’t want to make with interviews from that era talking about him feeling genuinely suicidal and like his career was stuck. Coincidentally the writing in the Japanese version of MGS4 makes it pretty clear that it’s essentially just a shitpost giving the fans the middle finger by giving them what they want in the worst way possible. A lot of the humour in MGS4 got lost in translation.

Yeah I've watched Kojima's sad career for quite a while. I still remember the MGS3 announcement vid proclaiming he was back as the director. Poor guy has been trying to escape Metal Gear to work on other things for so long and half the tards here don't even acknowledge it.

You can tell that he basically just stopped giving a shit with Peace Walker when he made it clear that he was just trying to make a Monster Hunter clone for his kid, which is why it had a lower age rating and a coop focus. Kojima at least seems happy now doing what he loves even though I don’t find his newer work as interesting as Policenauts and the earlier MGS-games.

I don't agree that he stopped giving a shit with PW, it was a portable game not some gigabudget crown israeliteel system seller so I imagine there wasn't the same amount of pressure or executive meddling
So he could just relax and do some silly low stakes stuff for a change and try to fix PO (of course Fultons are bad in their own way)
It's a playful game for the most part and a lot of us enjoy it for that reason

I meant more not giving a shit in the sense that he’s focusing on creating the next important game in the canon that will move the series forward and answer all the fans questions and instead just wanting to make a light hearted Monster Hunter clone for his kid and having to work that around MGS somehow. Tonally it’s a lot more goofy and lighthearted and it’s also the game where Kojima stopped trying to make the tech appropriate to the era (all the tech in MGS3 aside from the Shagohod was either real or based on prototypes that never got used, MGS1s genome soldiers was based on real stuff the US military was experimenting with etc) and instead just letting lose with whatever goofy robot shit they could cram into the game. I think the series works better if you play each game in the series without what came after into account. After MGS3 the canon pretty much stops mattering.

The game is going to deliberately invoke the first game in order to frick with your expectations of what’s to come. It’s deliberately a very meta game, but it’s also pretty much anti-fanservicey, which is why a lot of people didn’t initially like it at launch.

I never knew the translator did such a terrible job, and still consider MGS2 one of my favorite games, so I'd love to see a retranslation, whether fan made or (lol, as if) official.

The Final Fantasy 7 retranslation I played was a massive improvement over the original english translation, and this seems like a similar scenario.

I’m still surprised no one’s made an undub patch for any of the games. While I generally like the English voice cast the Japanese cast is leagues above in quality. The idea would be an undub with a better translation but I don’t think people would actually put in the effort to do something like that, most people don’t even know about the bad state of the original translation.

To be fair, it makes more sense with Pliskins original design where he was blonde and looked more like Liquid. His final design makes it more obvious that it’s just Snake.

MGS 1/2 translations are fine when viewed less as a translation of the source text and more a re-imagining of the game's script as though it was never in Japanese to begin with. Their purpose is to entertain, and they do a fine job of it. A far better job than if a stilted and awkward translation kept taking you out of each moment, reminding you that this is a Japanese game converted to English.
There are a lot of ideas, words, concepts, and constructs in Japanese that aren't very compatible with English when written idiomatically, and vice-versa. There are a lot of things that we say in English in wildly varied ways that often boil down to a handful of stock phrases in Japanese.
There's a line somewhere between literal and liberal where a translation interferes with a work's entertainment value. Anyone who reads translated manga or anime subtitles regularly can attest to that.
Objectively measuring the line between honest translation and fanfiction can be trickier despite appearing to be a simpler matter.

This only applies for MGS1 where the changes to the script were made to make the dialogue flow more naturally. MGS2s dialogue doesn’t sound natural at all and comes of as stilted, mainly because Kaku is a hack who didn’t know what she was doing and couldn’t pick up on any of the nuance from the original script whatsoever. Balusters for all his faults at least knew what he was doing and his changes were made for good reasons, even if the execution doesn’t always stick the landing. MGS3s dialogue is just as stilted as 2s while also capturing the original script much better without heavily changing or deleting lines because the translator felt like it.

You know that she called Kojima a hack (which is objectively true) but you somehow missed the fact that she had to work under extreme restraints? MGS2's engine can only display a certain amount of characters on screen in Codec conversations so there was simply not enough space for a proper English translation. When the translator told Konami this they contacted Kojima's team but they flat out refused to rewrite the code. The translator had to manually calculate the length of each line so it would at least display properly. It's a goddamn miracle MGS2's translation was even halfway coherent with all that bullshit.

The game has several instances of characters having long, unbroken sections of dialogue where the codec text will just shift to new text mid dialogue. They don’t need to slap a whole line into the codec, they never did either. Whenever there wasn’t enough space the text in the codec would just shift as the character kept speaking. Kaku is full of shit.
