FF14 dialogue is genuinely painful to read. It's "well written" but so fricking heavy to read because of the style. It's annoying. FF is supposed to be pop, and always has been, not fricking try hard convoluted poetry.

XIV was styling itself after Ivalice even before Yoshi-P and his Matsuno fetish came on board, so they localized it in the style of FFXII and War of the Lions.

As someone who likes the shitty jokes Koji Fox crams into the game, I totally agree. I get WHY everyone talks like that, because that’s just how the average western player expects people to sound in a medieval fantasy setting. But I still don’t like it.

Games like FFXII and the FFT retranslation break that mold
      >You, no less human than we? Ha! Now there's a beastly thought. You've been less than we from the moment your baseborn father fell upon your mother in whatever gutter saw you sired! You've been chattel since you came into the world drenched in common blood!
Granted, Koji is not as good as Alexander O. Smith either, but he's following the same vein, but sometimes he crosses the line from fanciful and theatrical to just plain stupidly old-fashioned
"Buscarron's Druthers" is a crappy name, both for a character and for an bar, and so is all the faux-french of Ishgard.

Is this the power of American education? If these people would attempt even the more approachable literary classics like Moby Dick, Dracula, or Pride and Prejudice they'd get an aneurism.

Are you Black folk really in this thread acting like this corny ass anime game's story is comparable to classic literature? You XIV players really are a bunch of cultist holy shit.

Actually his point was that FFXIV is very easy to read and not comparable at all to classic literature which is why they'd have an aneurysm trying to read something like Moby Dick.

No, I'm laughing at a moron who finds some thee's and thou's and regency vocabulary in tabletop fantasy genre fiction to be "heavy to read", when the actual literature that vocabulary is pulled from is a hundred times denser.
Apparently you don't have any reading comprehension either.

It is a heavy needlessly superfluous read for a fairly average anime story. Just tell the fricking story without pretending it's Shakespeare.

They smile and say how amazing it is, because it's enforced by their PR departments.

But later on in candid interviews they speak about how much they hate how westerners rewrite their stuff.

Yes, I’m sure Yoshi-P worked closely with Koji Fox on 16, having the entire game mocapped, facial captured, and voice acted in English first because he hates the guy’s work so much.

It’s okay to admit some devs aren’t bothered by localization changes.

      Anonymous

Koji was picked for XIV because his background in linguistics was important to the theme they wanted to explore about language barriers. XIV is a rare case of the localization being more faithful to the actual intent of the writers at least the original ones in 1.0, because the whole language thing has been dropped since then because Koji set out recognizable accents and dialects for every country in the setting, and even wrote full languages for each of the beast tribes which the developers intended to have voice acted, though the only one that actually made it in the final product was the dragon language. The Japanese version of the game fails to reflect any of the intended language differences between the various peoples.

The difference is that he adds or changes the script in a way that still respects the original source material and maintains continuity to the context of the game world.
He isn't doing it to push an agenda or to spite incel fans of the game.

Clear, concise, and honestly... pretty hilarious. Alphinaud can't swim! Everyone from all walks of life, including those without an English major, can understand it. Beautiful. How dare Koji continue to frick with the masterpiece that is the JP script?

It makes midwits think the generic JRPG plot they're reading is high art. I will admit that Koji's work with dragonspeak is pretty cool, and you could have someone much worse in charge of the localization.

Koji isnt just a translator or localizer. He works with the story and lore team so he is partially responsible for the canon too, which is why his stuff isnt fanfiction like the normal homosexuals do. Maybe we need community notes on Ganker too.

I just press A repeatedly through all dialogue. I'm not reading these boring plots. The lalas always manage to read the most annoyingly, tarutaru were much cuter.
