Its not a myth they very seldomly bathed and even thought it would make you sick to bathe too often.

Southern Europeans bathed, mostly because of Moorish influence. But northern Europeans actively avoided it because they believed it was vanity and thus evil to do so. They would usually only bathe about once a month. Funfact: perfume was invented because prior to the late 18th century it was common to piss and shit in stairwells and hallways (no indoor plumbing), so the only way to be able to stand the smell was to effectively fry your sense of smell.

It took Europeans centuries to re-learn how to bathe like the Romans

Bathing isn't the same as cleaning. Europeans mostly just cleaned with wet cloths and hot water.
Sure, it isn't as clean as a proper bath, but they weren't mud-covered and sweaty constantly.
Getting sick from constant bathing myth is likely due to the water not being heated and bathing in drinking supplies.

I'd like a source on the perfume thing. While there was no 'plumbing,' that doesn't mean they didn't have toilets; just no way to dispose of the waste without a lucky serf.

              Anonymous

Medieval Europeans bathed quite frequently, actually. Bathhouses were connected to bakeries because the excess heat from the oven would heat the water in the bathhouse. They were commonly dens of degeneracy, causing the clergy to oppose them because ladies of poor fatherly relationships would frequent them.

The no-bathing thing would come later. It was Louis XIV that only bathed, allegedly, 3 times in his entire life. He was superstitiously afraid of bathes, as were many of the French nobility at the time. There were Russian diplomats who complained to the Tzar that Louis XIV was one stinky motherfricker. He probably did bathe more than thrice in his life, but as apocryphal as it may be, the French Court in the 1600s was likely not much better than their pirates in the Caribbean in terms of cleanliness.

Which, I'll give you this one for free, is inherently wrong because 'weeb' is a contraction of 'weaboo' which is a derivative term from 'wapanese', a westerner acting as if they were Japanese. Slang is already a tool for mongoloids, but by using it arbitrarily and without any context you are contributing to my list of reasons as per why most of humanity should be in a gulag

A weeb is a westerner trying to ape Japanese culture. Something made by a Japanese person, cannot be "weeb" (which is an adjective reserved for a person, by the way).
A westerner drawing things in Japanese style, is "weeb" because a westerner is imitating a Japanese style.

It's weird how often the idea of long-distance time travel and forgotten tech seems to be floated in these games, a game series so obsessed with the concept of time yet only uses it for a throwaway game mechanic or block puzzles like twice every game.
I could've sworn having an actual future-future was an early pitch for at least one game at some point, even.

Make some weird shit, get it out of your system, never acknowledge it again. People will end up hating that game when it comes out and jerk it off when the game after that releases anyway.

Something similar is the plot of Ys VIII. There is a threat that causes apocalypses every couple hundred million years. There were great civilizations in the Snowball Earth, Cambrian, Carboniferous, and Cretaceous Era, all wiped out.

the white race is literally that group of people right now. a thousand years from now, the Black person mutts will ponder what happened to us and mention us in their fairy tales. they'll probably just conclude that it was "some kind of disaster" that did us all in.

My issue isn't with the concept of a supertech ancient civilization, it's that every event in BOTW/TOTK seems to be boiled down to one of four eras:
    >Ancient civilization
    >The Flashback
    >The rise of the current civilization as opposed to the ancient civilization
    >Right fricking now
It feels like the Ancient Civilization™ in either game did all their shit across all of hyrule within a few years at most, with how homogenous it is. They have no sense of history within themselves, they're a comically perfectly preserved and presented period of history. They're also the only surviving part of history from their era. No alternative culture from the time of the Sheikah is ever presented in BOTW, except in terms of how it interacts with the Sheikah through their Divine Beast. TOTK at least makes its temples more aesthetically distinct, even if they largely boil down to "The Zonai showed up and gave every major civilization a cool toy, and all those civilizations just happened to persist for ten thousand years totally fricking unchanged so now they get to play with those toys again :)"
The Flashback, of course, refers to The Time You Flash Back To. We don't ever see anything BUILT in The Flashback Era, it's all either "hey look it's the Ancient Civilization™'s stuff!" or "we are living in the Not Ancient Civilization™, you can tell because we build our things out of bricks and not solid fused stone".
The world feels completely sterile, everything about it is too well segmented and too evenly divided. Frick man, OoT didn't tell you shit about half the temples but they all at least FELT like they were built by different people at different times. Where the hell is the ancient forest civilization that built the forest temple? Who were they? The deku and the kokiri neither have the builds or means to do it, so who did, and why did they live in the forest? This alone is a more intriguing change in a non-neutral civilization than anything in the new two games.

i'll say it depends on how it's done
if it's just "there used to be a civilization that's no longer around, and the random shit you see is just leftovers from it" with no more depth, then it's a moronic trope
but if we get to find out a lot about it and it ties with the current world and everything in it in interesting ways, i'll say it's pretty good
in other words, i don't want it to feel like an afterthought

If the ancient civilization is presented in such a way that you're forced to assume it rose, did everything, then fell within a few years, that's the fricking WORST shit.

That more because modern buildings are designed to be torn down when they become "unprofitable". Nothing today is designed with the intention of lasting forever.

In that particular case it was because they didn't mix the ingredients well, which had a self healing side benefit when water got into cracks.

Planned obsolescence wasn't really a thing before the 90s. The reason our infrastructure from the 50s, 40s, and earlier are collapsing is because of motor vehicles. Roman roads couldn't handle an 18 wheeler - they would crumble just as readily as asphalt roads. Maintenance is just a sad fact of reality as long as we give people freedom of movement.

The real issue isn't that our infrastructure falls apart, but that the French ruined architecture. 1950s French architecture spread across the world because it was so "transgressive" and "modern". Everywhere there were Europeans - prior to the French ruining architecture - there were amazing buildings. Look at practically anything built in the 1890s - 1920s. Even the skyscrapers were gorgeous marvels of design. But then the French leftoids created pic related and everything went to pot.

To play devil's advocate, what if they do but we have no wya of accessing it. Like vhs exist but vcrs are sparse and like thay even if we had the proverbial vhs we don't have the proverbial vcr to access the data.

          Anonymous

They don't, because (using your modern day example) unless these hyper advanced ancient civilizations decided to have 50 gorillion different shaped vcrs and 50 gorillion different shaped vcr players we have yet to unearth anything uniform in shape and fairly plentiful in quantity that makes us go "well wtf is this shit".

That doesn't matter. In our "primitive" society right now how many cds, hard drives, or ssds exist. These hyperadvanced civilizations should, merely by volume, have enough of their data storage devices survive the test of time, and would all look uniform because the data would be read using the same exact media player.

I can believe a few thousand years old civ figuring out running water and some degree of engineering and math, but more often than not it boils down to "look, it's basically alien magi-tech, but it's been right here all along!!"
TotK is especially silly because it's
      >oh look there's an even more ancient AND more advanced civ than the sheikah from 10k years ago

  54. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

Where do you think we came from, moron? The sphinx and the pyramids were a free energy generator. They were wiped out by a solar flare.

  55. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

I definitely do feel like there should be a cutoff point in technological development where extinction/destruction is functionally impossible, particularly in interstellar civilizations, but the Sheikah in BotW/TotK didn't disappear, they were ordered by the King 10,000 years ago to dismantle their technology after the Calamity was defeated due to it presumably posing an unnecessary risk now that the danger had passed
While that is very fricking stupid in general and especially if the sheikah's technology is implied to go beyond the divine beasts and guardians into things like infrastructure that helped the kingdom and wasn't an actual threat, this decision is explicitly the reason the Yiga exist as a faction because they didn't want to follow the order
That said they logically probably should have used more of the ancient technology in their equipment and aesthetic rather than the goofy ninjas we did get, but they were good too so I guess it can go either way
