just pages and pages of people being raped raw as rajesh turned the entire software into being web based
some poor lads have had high scores into the GIGABYTES of RAM being used while idle.

worse, CEF from some 3 years old unmaintained branch, literally Adobe-tier
What i dont understand is why these companies dont just design their own UI? Valve is a multi BILLION dollar company, designing a fast and sleek UI would cost peanuts for them and increase user satisfaction by alot. Hire 50 decent programmers for 100k a year, let them work on a UI for 2 years and bam, amazing UI for 10 million dollars, almost irrelevant loss of profits considering they earn hundreds of millions of dollars a year
Is there something im not understanding here?
>Hire 50 decent programmers for 100k a year, let them work on a UI for 2 years and bam, amazing UI for 10 million dollars
WTF would it take 50 engineers and $10m to replace Steamshit with something that works? It shouldn't even take half those numbers. WTF is wrong with the world?
OR they could spend 50k hiring some pajeet and get it done and the userbase would eat it up because they are a monopoly and save 10 million dollar for their bonus...whoa
They did before for the main ui and big picture mode. It used SDL and it ran very well everywhere. But they then wanted to "modernize" the ui and the people that made the previous ui probably no longer works at valve. The only ones remaining are incompetent web devs.
Because making a web browser from scratch is unironically harder than making an entire Operating System.
It's way easier to use existing framework to construct what is basically a desktop web app running on top of the browser's engine.
Think about it. Even Microsoft dropped Explorer and Edge is just Chromium.
Apple is the only one who has their own browser because they are autistic and won't give up and it shows, because Safari is by far the least supported browser in modern day and the one where sites break most often.
Chrome is just a fork from Apple's Webkit, of which a lot was contributed (for free) by the KDE project of all places.
It has a weird history
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebKit
You have that wrong. WebKit was forked from KHTML.
Imagine not being able to read your own article...
Then the question is does Steam really have to run an entire browser inside it? They can regulate everything Steam shows so why not make it simple like just basic HTML rendering or something custom?
Their web store is a browser pretty much.
>Think about it. Even Microsoft dropped Explorer and Edge is just Chromium.
That's just because Microsoft is run by a pajeet and they were outsourcing everything they could. Win10 took ten years to get as many changes as other Windows' versions got in their 3 year development cycles.
so just use qt or something?
You don't need a browser to create a desktop game store.
Applel Safari is using WebKit as the engine. Goolag Chrome engine is called Blink which is just a fork of WebKit. The only reason websites refuse to work ok Safari is Goolag efforts to EEE the internet.
>Apple has their own browser
Imagine having your nose so far up Tim Apple's ass that you think Apple can write their own browser.
Safari is nothing but a skin on WebKit, just like any browser that is not Firefox.
There are two browser engines now – Gecko and WebKit. Every browser is a light skin on top of one of these two.
Because the people in charge are just as moronic as the people making the UIs. At least Steam UI works, Epic Store UI tends to freeze up for like 10 seconds every time I open it. That's a company making the most advanced game engine in the world and they can't make a little shop window run without constant freezes
>Is there something im not understanding here?
Yes, GUI and GUI toolkit are two different things, moron.
Because they can just keep the dogshit UI and pocket that money themselves
People who care about user experience are not exactly overrepresented in senior management, but greedy fricks are
Because they can. What are steam drones gonna do ?
Because it's notoriously hard to make UI natively, harder to make it appear hip and modern (material and shit like that) and even harder to make them appear in the same way across all platforms.
As someone who worked with Windows API to create UI I can tell you that you need to put in a few millions easy right off the bat just to be able to have a working non-production ready prototype. It is unironically much easier to just hack together HTML components that basically live in a DOM tree in the known and familiar web run time that people know how to work with. This is why everything is web-first now, even on desktop, it just saves money and time.
While you might be throwing millions of dollars at developing your own native custom thing, the competitor will have already pushed it to prod and the average end user will probably not care.
You want to pay $5 million a year for a fricking UI?
>What i dont understand is why these companies dont just design their own UI? Valve is a multi BILLION dollar company, designing a fast and sleek UI would cost peanuts for them and increase user satisfaction by alot.
How are you going to run that UI in browser? Do you want to compile it to wasm and reimplement entire rendering engine inside a browser that has its own rendering engine? Or do you want to have two separate UI frameworks that has to look the same despite running on separate engines?
This is so much more work and maintainance cost for barely any actual gain. If you have a website styles in css and html, then you might as well make the rest of UI in css and html.
>CEF
>Chromium Embedded Framework
WTF
Oh, you know, that program that was used to display a main menu for Warcraft III reforged. Useful stuff.
Steam is either Chromium Embedded Framework or Electron. Can't remember which (they're both basically the same).
yup
they removed all VGUI parts from it
VGUI was sovll
They should have just switched it out for QT with webview. Any manager who signs of on Javascript shit for something which has to run in the background is jeet or honorary jeet.
>manager
>in valve
Steam uses Chromium Embedded Framework, which is Electron without the Node.js part. That's also the reason that they're dropping Windows 7 and 8 - because Chromium is.
>That's also the reason that they're dropping Windows 7 and 8
So what about old games? Am I losing access to my W7 library because a multi-million company can't craft a minimally functional native launcher?
Frick this web homosexualry.
A company of this size should have a native client.
And btw an outdated chromium client can run for 2-3 years without compatibility issues. Just show a dialog about muh security updates and let me play my stuff.
Just play newer games?
>Just play newer games?
There is very VERY few things past 2020 worth playing
Wdym you don't consoom modern DRMed goyslop? Maybe you also don't pay for Netflix?
I will puff my chest a bit and say i try to actively avoid all games with telemtry or ring 0 DRM
Denuvo is neither tho.
Denuvo is absolutely ring 0
Denuvo games never ask for admin rights and don't install additional drivers on kernel modules. Cracks, on the other hand, do tend to ask for admin rights, mostly because repackers add that manifest to their exes - and because they may want to subvert DRMs and debuggers running in userspace.
What the hell are you smoking? I don't know a game that works on Win7 but doesn't work on 10 or 11. Hell, even the great majority of XP games still work on 11.
Alien vs. Predator 2
Played AVP2 on Wangblows 10 like 2 years ago.
I just spent the afternoon just to get it running in 16:9 without fricked up vision mods or tiny UI.
Everyone who has fingers in its licencing should get rope.
What does that have to do with Win10 though? You'd probably face the same problems trying to run it in widescreen resolution on Win7.
No would not, I specifically had one .dll file saved to make it run. In win7 it has no problems. In win10 it shat the bed.
Unfortunately Windows 11 doesn't support my old pc, which I'm not changing.
And why bother updating to W10 adware if they will deprecate it the next day. They are already unsupporting W8, which is basically as good as W10.
TL;DR I'm not paying an extra cent over this homosexualry, and I demand to be able to play the games I payed for.
Even the normie version of W10 is supported for 2 more years, but feel free to keep seething
>2 more years
Imagine switching a real OS that I own for ever such as W7 for untested poo in the loo adware that they menace to discontinue in 2 years.
BTW I can still run edge and firefox (latest version) in W7 x64. There is no reason software can't run on an "older" OS. An OS is just a task switcher, it doesn't need daily updates that break shit, and it doesn't need security updates if it is well designed.
If Valvle's shitty software needs muh OS libraries despite being web based just bundle them. If despite their size they depend on third parties to support their web framework then they should just remove that dependency and rewrite it themselves.
Tell them anon.
Either way to access the internet you will need a new computer because websites will demand a modern browser or block you and a modern browser needs RAM RAM RAM and a new OS who has spyware and uses more RAM RAM RAM.
Meanwhile the windows 98 e-mail client works to this day.
This game was rigged from the start anon.
I have RAM.
Way more RAM than those 2 GB W10 tablets.
You chose the seething option I see
Pictured steamies sucking W11 and W10 dick
>A company of this size should have a native client.
Dude... They still have i386 libs.
Funny thing is "VGUI" /was/ what the steam launcher was coded in, and that was their in house shit that's been in use since they made HL1. Instead of updating it, they decided to just replace it with CEF because nobody is required to actually work on something unless a large group wants to, flat structure and all that jazz.
I forgot about how Steam was that weird green so long ago
Takes me back to when life was simple and I was playing games with friends.
pure soul
>works instantly
>simple looking
>can change size to make it as small as you want
>you could use your own skins if you wanted to
MAYBE update the font/color scheme but other than that it's perfect
Steam's had a lot of UI changes through the years, until they settled on what is technically the current one back in 2010 I think, aside from some small tweaks and modifications here and there the UI by large remained the same for the past 13 years or so.
Steam has never looked like top right and I'm pretty sure lower right was just a custom theme from when steam still supported them .
I missed one UI design, the earliest.
Looks like Xfire
This worked well and used like 10MB of RAM. They shouldn't have changed it.
Holy shit, that takes me back. I remember when I first installed steam when I got the orange box in 2007 and the entire steam store literally had like 10 games, excluding the valve ones.
>in 2007
hello zoom zoom.
Back in 2004 steam was literally the Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike Source launcher.
>Steam has never looked
The puke green was the default steam look zoom zoom.
I didn't have money to buy games in 2004 so I just pirated them and never used steam until 2007.
>I didn't have money to buy games
Really? Explain anon.
I did have my
90s = pirate everything
2001 = gaming media memes me into "piracy le bad"
2002 = "OK I will buy games now look at all these games I own now legally"
2004 = Literally everyone starts their DRM that needs a internet connection non stop like Steam etc.
2005 = Frick this shit I pirate games I do not even own this shit now
Im not sure what you're asking me. I just wanted to play on official TF2 servers.
>The puke green was the default steam look zoom zoom.
Zero reading comprehension.
You can't even make the new steam at least look like this anymore because they gutted custom skins with the new update. Bullshit.
it's web, of course you can
This thing probably loaded everything near instantly, now it takes 10 seconds to change tab.
stopped support doesn't mean they will block you from running the software
>Ganker - Technology
In these times you never know.
>Am I losing access to my W7 library because a multi-million company can't craft a minimally functional native launcher?
YES.
>for 2-3 years without compatibility issues. Just show a dialog about muh security updates and let me play my stuff.
Meanwhile something like this will never happen to CD games anon. This is how fricked your generation is zoom zoom.
All you need to do is have a CD of you OS (win 95 or win 98) and a copy of the rivers and directx and other updates that are on other CDs and you can play them forever.
This is why people hate Steam and Valve.
Steam is DRM
Steam is slavery
You zoomers made fun of us when we pointed this out.
>scroll down the point shop with about 20 mouse wheel turns
>just download more ram bro
Kill steamwebhelper
You're supposed to do this anyway on TF2 community servers to block ads
>You're supposed to do this anyway on TF2 community servers to block ads
>to block ads
>to block ads
I'm sorry the what now?
Keep in mind I'm a pirate gamer.
tf2 is free
I don't work there, so idk
Custom TF2 community servers sometimes have ads that show when you join their servers. Don't know why anybody is playing on community servers in 2023 though since they all suck balls.
>have ads that show when you join their servers.
HUH and killing the client helps how?
>Don't know why anybody is playing on community servers in 2023 though since they all suck balls.
See the zoomer and his obsession to be controlled by a mega corporation, see the zoomer hating on freedom and community and only wanting the servers to be owned by a mega corporation.
>See the zoomer and his obsession to be controlled by a mega corporation, see the zoomer hating on freedom and community and only wanting the servers to be owned by a mega corporation.
I'd much rather play the fricking game on a variety of different maps than to join either a 24/7 2fort/turbine cancerfest, a 24/7 orange 100% crits cancerfest, or inceltopia with troony mods. If that makes me a le heckin' zoomie then so be it.
>I'd much rather play the fricking game on a variety of different maps
Have you considered the concept of changing the 24/7 server?
You know to discover a different map?
Like we did back in the day?
Can zoomer really not simply switch the server they are on?
What is it with zoomers?
>Only play 1 game artistically non stop (minecraft or fortnight )
>Is hostile when people suggest he changes the game to a different one
>Only plays on 1 server non stop
>Is hostile when people suggest he changes the SERVER to a different one
>on a variety of different maps
I'm not cucking for the TF2 community however do you not have servers who have maps who rotate? I remember them back in the day.
If you take 1 second to stop seething about imaginary zoomers you'd realize that TF2 community servers are literally all I just listed. No servers have actual map rotations anymore, except Uncletopia which is infested with tryhard competitive wannabes overlooked by troony admins who will ban you from all of their servers for the slightest politically incorrect offense (no sprays or custom mods allowed on these servers too btw). All, and I mean ALL of the 24/7 servers either run 2fort, turbine, or Dustbowl which are all terrible maps and get grating after 30 minutes of play for anybody with an IQ above 80. MAYBE you'll get Badwater/Upward, but even those maps get tiring after a while.
Everything else is custom gamemode cancer like deathrun or Slender Fortress, so the only way to play Vanilla TF2 in the current year with a map rotation is Valve's Casual mode that is infested with bots that they do literally nothing about. Or you can go play TF2 Classic which is nice.
>custom gamemode cancer
Yes I understand you since I remember counter strike turning into this. No game only random mod shit.
Either way it looks like the TF2 community is dead.
>No servers have
Do /i look like someone who has played TF2 after 2017 ?
>Do /i look like someone who has played TF2 after 2017 ?
You're lucky then. There's still tons of people playing it but the absolute STATE it's in compared to how it was in, say, 2012, is fricking abysmal.
zoomie
Just kill steamwebhelper
Works every time
PLEASE BRING BACK -NO-BROWSER THIS WOULDNT BE A ISSUE IF THIS WAS A OPTION AGAIN
how if everything is a browser now, checkmate
You already have -no-browser, just don't run Steam. The whole UI is browser-based now so it's the same experience as -no-browser would be.

Denuvo has worked on Linux for a long time already.

Very subjective although I know a guy who shat on BotW as well. The 1st Judgment is for fans only: it's empty, game mechanics suck and the plot, along with activities, starts to unfold after 5 to 10 hrs in.
>I know a guy who shat on BotW as well
Based guy.
Yeah but he thinks all Final Fantasies are great except 15, maybe.
Just get it from some steam sharing site for 2$
I kekked hard. But as someone who pirates and also uses steam for mp games I'm still mad as frick. Frick Valve and frick Gabe and every single Black person who works at that shit company.
evrery game
I played pirated Rust on Russian servers and one day I decided I'll buy the game on steam because I played it so much.
Guess what. Legit game does not work on my PC because GPU is too old. This seemed strange since pirated one works without issues so I traced API calls and it basically doesn't run because legit one plays some stupid video as the menu background wile pirated one has that shit ripped out to make it leaner.
Piracy all the way I will never ever buy another piece of software.
Hey, at least you support the devs by giving them money.
Over 900MB for me wew, but whatever 32 GB is standard now. This is only a problem for poors.
>his computer can only run 35 programs at once
>not maxing out with 128gb
mineaswell just throw your computer away
Steam used to run on Windows 98 with 64MB of memory, it's not the computer's fault the devs are incompetent.
The standard is still 8-16GB. Even high end laptops rarely go above that.
Poorgay
?
There are poors on Ganker with less than 32gb of ram?? It's like $80 for 32gb, how poor are you?
Piss poor planning separates the rich and the poor. My overclocked 4.7Ghz all cores 4790k has 32GB of RAM and runs well to this day for 1080p, not going to upgrade hardware any time soon.
I have a 4790k on an ASUS Z97I-PLUS mobo which only supports max 16GB ram. When I bought it I thought I would never need more than 16, lel.
I can't be bothered to buy a new set of 32gb ram. Also what the frick am I supposed to do with the current 16gig set I have.
Laptop sodimm btw
I only have 16 GB because I've never needed more since I don't typically use JavaScript based garbage. It really isn't a problem unless you really love inefficient dynamically typed shit languages.
>I don't typically use JavaScript based garbage
every single website you visit uses javascript, even Ganker,
also JS is not entirely shit, you can run a simple nodejs app with it taking just 10MB or ram
it is all thousands of libraries they include in js code, that's the real bloat
>also the DOM, the dom is bloat. but the dom isn't JS.
Remember when steam used to run fine with just 512MB of ram or less?
I fricking hate webshit, webshitters and the antichrist.
Indeed.
I remember using xfire with 40MBs. It had basically everything I need from steam.
Mine slurped 8G while just sitting in the background, not good when I'm trying to run a frickhueg Matlab script that uses like 30G
Be like a normal person and use python for research related code.
Indians can't program for shit. The only silver lining is that their frickups open up loads of contract opportunities for actual competent developers to fix their mistakes
>Cheap labour gets you shit products
Who would have guessed
I know, right?
I don't care for it, but I'm an old man. The machine I have it installed on has 48GB of RAM so I don't care.
It does drop to ~230mb after couple of minutes.
it was <100 mb before they switched to js
Actually I was wrong. I was monitoring single process. It is indeed +500mb. Probably has complete chrome/google botnet built in now.
I wanted to try how much ram it uses with usual -no-browser switch and it does nothing with latest client.
Guess globohomosexual israelite got them too.
They removed -no-browser because the whole steam UI now runs in chromium, so no browser would mean no UI at all.
mine was still at 40mb when I just checked. I would probably only start to realize that it's eating more if it hit 4gb or something like that though. RAM is so cheap, I just always slot in way more than I need
Mine's still at ~100mb, but steam wants to restart for an update... I don't know what to do bros
Pic related works
Oops my bad
Works on linux too. Thanks anon.
Thanks for that bruv, but you just know it won't be long before they sunset this "feature" too.
Now how do I get it to do this automagically with the "Start With Windows" option.
I'd guess make that exe start with windows through task scheduler or some like that
place the shortcut in the startup folder (look it up)
It's been running 0MB on my machine but then again I pirate steam exclusives and never installed that malware on my PC.
I'll never understand what the frick VALVe is smoking because they just keep making the client worse and worse for literally NO REASON. There is zero incentive to make even the library a fricking browser page.
>lol jeets just absolutely rawdogged the world's most popular gaming platform

this one's worse
64gb of ram is only $100 nowadays
Why do I need to pay 100$ just because Valve is too cheap to hire devs that aren't from India?
You need to spend $100 dollars because it isn't 2001 anymore and the Thinkpad™ obsession is moronic.
DDR5 6000 CL30 is $197
You were right.Time to upgrade anon,4790 served you well but now everybody eats its lunch.
What annoys me the most about the UI changing bullshit is that there is not an option to change it back or modify it.
Valve is one the most profitable companies in the whole fricking world, the argument that shitholes like Reddit have
>muh investor meme, no profitable business model
doesn't apply here at all.
I have steam up rn in the background, it's using 45 mb, file explorer is using 46. So valve is at least doing better than microsoft
It's running in the task try right now (no window open). Only one game installed.
>Literally anything could cause your steam to crash.
Exactly why I won't spend any time diagnosing it. There is a 100% chance it's nothing that I did and nothing I can fix, so why bother. If it makes a habit of crashing then I'll worry about it. As far as I know it's a one off fresh install thing that will never happen again (it will crash differently next time).
By comparison Ubuntu (via WSL2) only uses 3mb of RAM, or at least that's all it reports using.
Task manager has been broken since Windows 10 1809, sometimes it doesnt report everything.
indeed
windows font render holy shit lmao
Looks fine on my LCD subpixel layout.

>High IQ linux user.
fixing stuff is fun anon, you should try it sometime when you're not wage slaving.
I used to think it was fun, then as I got older I saw that there are more people generating garbage operating systems than people fixing them so it is a loosing battle. Someday computers won't work anymore and nobody will know how to fix it or start over from scratch so we'll just go back to living in the jungles. I've accepted that.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
losing battle
see I can't even spell correctly how can I fix Steam?
>doesn't have time to look at program output and copy error message
>has time to take a screenshot and go on tech forum to make a post complaining that the program doesn't work without providing any details that could hint at the source of problem
Once you copy an error message from program output you have committed yourself to fixing it.
That sunk cost could mean hours of your time are now dedicated to fixing it. The more time you spend the more determined you will be to fix it.
But it's Steam. It's broken shit. You probably won't be able to fix it, and there will be a Steam update within 48 hours anyway which may or may not include a fix.
Meanwhile a post on Ganker is relatively noncommittal, in the sense that I won't feel bad if I don't return to a thread.
reminder that legendary-gl is a slim, ultra lightweight command line based drop in replacement for the epic games store that just works.
how many times do i have to tell you that unused ram is useless ram? i care more about its performance and/or its background CPU usage
I too enjoy filling the pagefile.
Just go back to the old client (with security patches) and restore Windows XP, Vista and 7 support in the process. Steam should basically be just an apt-get for gamers, it shouldn't need all this ram requirements.
Now you why there are so many obese people, because they think obese too.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM
>If your GPU isn't at 100% nonstop you're just wasting it
My unused RAM is already used for the disk cache.
For any fellow anons on Windows 7, you can return to the old UI by adding -vgui to your steam shortcut (pic related).
Additionally, if you use any custom skins you will be able to continue using them.
If you're used to using SteamFriendPatcher to replace the library&friends UI, you need to use 0.0.9 as the next update removed pre-win10 support.
Here's a direct link to the correct version:

Hope this helps.

I liked tech when it wasn’t always about poor fats trying to get by
You should have 32gb of ram by now
Get a job and upgrade or shut the frick up
There are more Steam users with 8GB than 32GB.
I actually have 32GB but I still hate it when incompetent devs do their best to make that obsolete as quick as possible.
32GB is already 32 times as much as I actually need for anything I'm doing if software was written efficiently.
A billion flies agree that shit is delicious.
>moronic analogy
Stay in school, kid
>times as much as I actually need for anything I'm doing if software was written efficiently.
However how can the devs implement a AI tracking for every pixel of the screen then? Check mate poorgay.
I remember when people cared about writing reasonably efficient software.
There are games now that use 32gb ram and look and play no better than a game from 2005 that uses 500mb. Insane.
A lot of that is that modern "easy" programming languages encourage terribly anti-performant code design, and even with "fast" languages like C++ or C# if you use Unreal or Unity you're still encouraged to do stupid shit like run blocking tasks on the main thread and use garbage collection.
Basically all of the tooling available to game designers who dont' want to make their own engine, forces them to do everything the slowest possible way. That's why computers that can do trillions of calculations per second bog down with 8-bit style side scrollers made in the last couple years.
>I remember when people cared about writing reasonably efficient software.
Was it in 1935?
Because the 80s and 90s where characterized by hardware gluttony.
webshitters and their consequences have been a disaster for the human race
why couldn't they just stick to their original vgui system that they had? steam crashes most times now because of a single webpage. web ui can go die in a fire.

my game crashes when i shift tab and attempt to view peoples profiles in game, anything to do with the overlay really
cant even start it with the .desktop shortcut have to use the terminal
why not just bring back --no-browser
between that and steam bullying wayland schizo devs I won't be supporting this company anymore
> Chromium browser
> 500MB
Yes?
can someone show that guy visual studio 2022
Yep I stopped having steam on because of this. Only use it while playing
People ask "why do you need so much RAM"
It's because programmers in their devops budget have machines with an amount of RAM and they use it.
I try to target double what a typical work machine has so my PC is guaranteed for 5-7 years.
Everything being fricking browser-based and web browsers now being "CACHE IT ALL IN RAM AND NEVER CLEAN THAT", 32GB can find itself loaded up beyond 10-12GB.
This is a nuSteam freshly restarted, opening the store page and going through the "discover queue" list.
That webhelper process with the 1% CPU use just builds and builds RAM allocation until it hits 1.2GB.
But I've been in the habit of shutting down Steam when I dont need to play for years now. Steam absolutely RAPES your CPU idle and wastes 3+ watts constantly. Fricking joke of a program.
forgot pic
>Steam absolutely RAPES your CPU idle and wastes 3+ watts constantly.
I wonder. How do I do kill -STOP and kill -CONT via GUI in Linux? There are tools to suspend a process in the OS and tbh Steam is obnoxious with its "deals" and "friends" and a "store" with live video translations.
Sirs, the sd subreddit is back, but there are no new posts. I can't tell if it's because no one is posting or because they won't let anyone post now, because I don't have a shitdid account.
Chasing aesthetics is a endless, zero-sum game, and every single modern service platform is falling for it.
GOG blew themselves out too with Galaxy.
The simple fact that they don't allow end-users to trim it down to KB's proves it's all glowie garbage.
>duuude we need a single UI that looks good on mobile, big tvs, desktop and in VR
Why are blackrock corpos like this
galaxy 1.x was pretty nice. 2.0 was (is? I never installed on this pc) garbage, and actually overwrote my non steam game gog game shortcuts so they no longer launched on steam.
i wish that there could be a third party steam client, made with just plain gtk or something.
>third party
>steals your login credentials
:^)
make it open source so you can pretend to audit it and claim it is secure
>le open source meme
nobody is smart enough to check the source code
It's pretty easy to hide malicious code in plain sight through obfuscation.
function _0xcc1b(_0x9aa0d7,_0x45a6ad){var _0x2acc0d=_0x2acc();return _0xcc1b=function(_0xcc1bd2,_0x4a5c5f){_0xcc1bd2=_0xcc1bd2-0x92;var _0x49b245=_0x2acc0d[_0xcc1bd2];return _0x49b245;},_0xcc1b(_0x9aa0d7,_0x45a6ad);}(function(_0x5dbb0c,_0x4b4daa){var _0x51e38f=_0xcc1b,_0x5235e0=_0x5dbb0c();while(!![]){try{var _0x31a0c6=parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x98))/0x1*(parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x99))/0x2)+parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x93))/0x3*(-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x96))/0x4)+-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x9b))/0x5*(-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x9e))/0x6)+-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x9f))/0x7+-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x9a))/0x8*(parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x94))/0x9)+parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x95))/0xa+-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x97))/0xb*(-parseInt(_0x51e38f(0x92))/0xc);if(_0x31a0c6===_0x4b4daa)break;else _0x5235e0['push'](_0x5235e0['shift']());}catch(_0x557915){_0x5235e0['push'](_0x5235e0['shift']());}}}(_0x2acc,0xdf717));function hi(){var _0x2a94a6=_0xcc1b;console[_0x2a94a6(0x9c)](_0x2a94a6(0x9d));}function _0x2acc(){var _0x119dbc=['54dfULJj','8328030KeyXca','36PRXddz','11Kmemol','323JLJeWh','1758PtgJub','826976IDsGae','2080JWSycw','log','Hellox20World!','3012iNkkxv','2894332crkxTV','24285996BOecWS','466818DPvnmt'];_0x2acc=function(){return _0x119dbc;};return _0x2acc();}hi();
that's only because the typical person doesn't have the mental endurance to care. regardless, that it's just translating hex to plain or something else.
All that code does is print hello world.
And regardless, the typical person (including programmers) don't care enough to put in the effort.
Look you are an effort-minded person on Ganker of all places, you're already at least one standard deviation above your local population.
We're all friends here, even if we're enemies. You get me?
Obfuscated code in open source = malicious code.

Using steam feels worse after this update
I've had videos continue to play in the background after closing Steam, and all sorts of blackscreen issues. At one point I couldn't even buy a game because the store just kept blackscreening on me. I can't remember the last time any piece of software got an update and actually felt better to use. Maybe when browsers started using tabs?
Steam interface is closer to what in was in 2010. I feel back at home with this one.
i miss the 2003 one
Who can't afford 500MB in 2023???
That thread is a fricking freak show of tech illiteracy.
The internet is filled with vocal children. Stop taking anything on it seriously.
I'm not taking nothing seriously. I'm just making fun of them.
i hate how it looks now. it is different instead of the same. i want it to go back.
I have 64gb of RAM and I still don't want steam use more than 100mb
simple as
>i have much ram
>but i waste my life slaving at my computer, minmaxing as if i only had 2gb, despite never using more than 80% under load
cure for autism when?
I let my work run in the background and that's a 50GB job
do in reality I have 14 to spare. Steam doesn't deserve even one third of a gb
Did steam finally add a 64 bit client or is it still 32?
still 32 because their pajeetcode probably has a lot of insane jeet hacks that only worked by accident on 32 bit and if they compile as 64 bit their code is full of errors and crashes every 5 seconds.
Still relies on 32bit libs, I listed libs with lsof, the process "~/.steam/ubuntu12_32/steam -nominidumps -nobreakpad" still uses anything from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ld-linux.so.2 to idk, /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libmount.so.1.1.0. 142 libraries total.
So which is it? 490 or 522 MB? Fricking idiot. People should be banned from the internet.
I feel like a small competent white development team could rewrite Steam from scratch in a relatively short amount of time and it'd run fricking amazingly.
But then again why optimise when end users are perfectly happy to brute force?
Imagine the carnage if climate activists ever realised how much electricity is wasted brute forcing bad code.
playing video games at all is a waste of electricity. non commercial, non research computing should be restricted by quotas to conserve valuable energy for actually important tasks.
Shut up Xi Jinping.
Why not build more nuclear powerplants employing hundreds of workers, and eventually reducing the cost of energy - and do both?
>build dangerous radioactive plants that can detonate and wipe out half a state if someone so much as pushes the wrong button
>generate billions of tons of deadly waste that never ever goes away
we evolved past nuclear long ago. i guess if you want to live in stalker irl, go for it.
either a israelite or npc that fell for the psyops
nuclear plants are the real definition of safe and effective
>nuclear plants are the real definition of safe and effective
This entire argument is based on the nuclear lobby saying "dude trust me".
That's not how nuclear power works, you're a child
>climate activists ever realised
You're thinking too high of them.
Steam, as in just the native desktop client or also mobile client and website and big picture and steam os and steam link(hardware) and steam link app and vgui and god knows what other ui valve produced?
Because they all are connected in ways that you wouldn't expect.
>if climate activists ever realised how much electricity is wasted brute forcing bad code.
Stoped reading right here.
Climate activists are literally World Economic Forum pawns who will bend over backwards to justify WEF propaganda this year.
Because everything cna be made to be Pro eco or Anti-Eco
Paper bags?
>MY GOD! YOU ARE DESTROYING TREES FOR THIS!
Plastic bags?
>100% eco! no tree harmed and can be recycled (unlike paper)
VS
Plastic bags?
>NOOOO MUH moronic TURTLES ARE GETTING HURT! BAN THIS!
Paper bags?
>The new thing this decade! Stop asking where this paper comes from. We need to destroy the rain forest for our turtle meme!
Yeah, these fricking elitist globalists want to push all those good ole traditional mom and pop refineries and plastic bag manufacturers out of business.
the state of california banned plastic straws wrapped in paper, so businesses were forced to buy new paper straws wrapped in plastic.
>the state of california banned plastic straws wrapped in paper, so businesses were forced to buy new paper straws wrapped in plastic.
Post examples of this.
I get the popcorn.
>mom and pop refineries
Never implied by me.
>Yeah, these fricking elitist globalists want to
At this point I suspect it is literally a mind game to keep the plebs occupied with current year eco shit (it self contradicts and changes back and forward like in 1984)
>Nooo my multi trillion dollar tree harvesting mega corporation!
>Someone insulted my mega corporation that destroys forests!
>Must defend my tree destruction mega corporation!
Beyond unreal.
>We need to destroy the rain forest for our turtle meme!
Paper has always been sourced from tree farms. They just plant trees extremely densely and then harvest them while they're saplings a few weeks later. Never mind bamboo, it's basically turning a weed into paper goods. Plastic was the biggest con of the century.
>Paper has always been sourced from tree farms.
Question where do you place these tree farms?
Answer on forests you cut down.
>tree farms.
Translation
>WE NEED MORE TREE FARMS !
>CUT DOWN MORE FORESTS FOR TREE FARMS!
>Plastic
Did never require you to cut down forests.
How is destroying forests because moronic turtles are moronic looking out for you?
>dude just buy more ram it's cheap
remember that even if you have 4 DIMM slots you're most likely going to have to sell it and buy 2x16 because memory controllers on most non-high-end mobos will shit itself and won't let you clock as much, probably won't even run the XMP profile - especially on AMD boards from the last 5 years
not to mention the issues with mixing up different sticks brands/dies
>memory controllers on most non-high-end mobos
Uhhhh
It's in the CPU since Sandy Bridge/AM2, I think.
Anyway. My Z77 hosts 24GB just fine because of bent socket pins, so 32 is out of the question. The previous one, AM3, ran 32GB alright.
>not to mention the issues with mixing up different sticks brands/dies
The "issues". Absolute consoomer take. Buy a second hand RAM, or sticks from ebay, or sticks from Aliexpress, install them, they work. That's it. Leave the "issues" scaremongering to QVL composers @mobo vendors payroll.
It's not scaremongering, the memory controller chiplet on Zen is fricked and can't clock as high or even run XMP profiles if you use 4 sticks. This is a well known issue.
I don't see it, looks like 4 sticks make a slight improvement of 10%. Nor do I see a reason to go above 3200MHz since mem speed increase offers diminishing returns. Even 3000MHz will do, as a baseline of a solid performance in 2023.
depending on a game a RAM overclock can give you as much performance uplift as CPU or GPU overclock.
plus it barely changes power usage, making it the most efficient way to gain performance.
>The "issues". Absolute consoomer take.
it might straight up not work. the part of not being able to run XMP with 4 slots taken is very common on most AM4 boards
for example i have E-die clocked to 3600mhz at lower than stock latency. i very much doubt i would achieve the same with 4 sticks of the same RAM, and it would straight up be impossible with mixed dies.
>muh % of performance
zen cpu performance is tied heavily with ram clock speed, so you would lose performance across 90% of the games even if you doubled your ram, unless they used more than 16gb (which most don't, at least yet)
>i very much doubt i would achieve the same with 4 sticks of the same RAM, and it would straight up be impossible with mixed dies
You don't need 3600 on Zen 1/2/3 to begin with. IF clocks are not designed for that, I checked them just this spring. Linear growth was on CS Go and that's it, for the money spent on 3600 RAM it's possible to get a better CPU for a perf boost everywhere.
So, bottom line is the same: if you need more RAM, don't jerk off over MHz because by the time you NEED more, it's a dead platform. Go ahead and sell you high-spec kits to some weirdo necromancer overclocker, purchase a ton of chinkshit RAM and forget about needing more ram by trading 5-10% of the performance.
>IF clocks are not designed for that
lol, there's no reason to not have as high IF clock as possible, given it's stable
>for the money spent on 3600 RAM
just get non-shit die and oc it yourself, i got 3000mhz e-die and it works fine on 3600CL14. same price as your standard 3200mhz, even
3600mhz are barely more expensive
>purchase a ton of chinkshit RAM and forget about needing more ram by trading 5-10% of the performance.
if you need more RAM for whatever your usage is then true, but for gayming alone that's a moronic opinion, you'll end up losing performance just to be able to brag about chrome allocating 16gb instead of 8gb
I'm actually thinking of upgrading to 128 gigs of ram because while working I steadily use at least 20 gigs. Is it doable or the system is going to run like shit?
depends on board/cpu. check your mobo specs because the cheapest ones might have max 64gb.
it would probably run no issues, but i wouldn't be surprised if the XMP wouldn't work and you'd be limited to 2666mhz
>Running 4x sticks of 8GB DDR4-3000 at 14-14-14-34 on a 5900x with no issues
k
Steam has always been a web browser
They used a system renderer before the previous redesign. So from 2010 to.. 2018?
>~~*steam*~~
Even the cheapest disposable laptops have 8gb ram these days stop complaining.
Imagine if hardware manufacturers couldn't be bothered to use space efficiently anymore and made computers like this instead.
>Why don't you buy a bigger house, poorgay
here you go.
$16
bump
be grateful chang is giving it to you for such a good deal
I will NEVER understand the need for constantly overhauling UIs of software, especially when the new version is almost always objectively worse. The old steam UI was perfectly fine. What exactly does the new one improve? I can kinda rationalize it for big bloated companies that do it just because they need to find some busywork for their teams of JS pajeets, but Valve is a private lean company with no outsourced poo teams AFAIK.
Can someone who does UI/frontend shit please explain this to me? Why are UIs only ever getting worse?
>Why are UIs only ever getting worse?
The world economic forum demands it.
Nice try CIA.
Yet in reality they literally posted this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You%27ll_own_nothing_and_be_happy
what does ugly ui have to do with not owning anything? is the white race going to commit mass suicide because steam looks shitty now? is that their real endgame?
updating the ui is just an excuse to slide in more dystopian botnet/spyshit. you get big shiny update, you see new ui, you dont think about whats going on in the background.
it was already spyware
and they can do that in a minor unnoticed "bugfix/performance" update anyway
>what does ugly ui have to do with not owning anything?
Less functionality -> less power -> no reason to not switch to the globohomosexual cloud now.
oh, and I thought that all the antivax lunatic idiots were dead by now
you must have slipped somehow.
>kek, all those antivaxx schizos are going to be dead of rona within 2 weeks
>kek, all those vaxxed sheeple are going to be dead of clots within 2 weeks
>antivax
Not vaccinated and still living.
How is your family dropping dead from "UNRELATED MEDICAL
COMPLICATIONS" looking now?
>Not vaccinated and still living.
the pandemic is not over you know.
the only reason you are still alive is because you spend your entire day on your computer, not going outside, talking to people etc.. which not that I think about..
GOOD.
>the pandemic isnt over yet
how many boosters are you on, my dude?
If they're following the government's recommendation they should be getting their 15th soon.
I'm sure you'll find many flat earth threads there
those posts ahve nothing to do with flat earth, and the last post quoted is only one which mentions political things...how many boosters have you had?
crazy conspiracy theories go hand in hand
ok you got lucky?
doesn't mean that a very large portion of your age group would be safe
pandemic science, is not for individuals, you look at the big numbers,
percentages of population etc.... gosh, you people are truly brain dead..
>asking someone how many boosters theyve had when that person believes we are in a pandemic is a conspiracy theory
looks like the shills dont like us talking about the reasons for updating the steam ui. thats kinda weird.
>gosh, you people are truly brain dead..
Ah yes.
How dare we question the globohomosexual numbers give to us by globohomosexual (previously named government/mega corporations)! You are denaying science! Have blind faith in whatever globohomosexual tells us!
Classic NPC strategy
>Ridicule any opinion not being 100% in line with the government as le flat earth meme
>the pandemic is not over you know.
Almost no one is getting vaccinated now. The charade is over.
>the pandemic is not over you
The pandemic ended when NATO decided that le evil Russian man is more important then le fake pandemic.
>the only reason you are still alive
Got COVID 2 times (confirmed) and I'm still alive.
Not taking your magic mega corporation injection gayot.
>work in pharmacy
>literally in contact with it all day everyday for 2 years
>got it once
>lived
>never got it again
>0 shots
Get fricked.
If you got it already that builds immunity, just like the shot. How do you not know this if you work in the field?
>boosters build immunity
is literally the opposite of how the vaccine worked which is why it caused so many problems and why they stopped recommending it for everyone. update your software, your covid_cef is on version 20.21, you need to updoot to 2023.
that's called natural immunity and it's as robust and immune protecting as it ever has been, hard to believe governments in partnership with corporations tried to gaslight us on whether it had ever existed to begin with, which should've alerted the thinking person to a healthy dose of skepticism
the shot doesn't build immunity, which is why frequent doses are required
>go to colleg
>learn how to do webshit ui
>oldgays retire/get proomooted
>get hired to replace them
>do what youve been taught to do
we live in a self perpetuating cycle of garbage in, garbage out. the current industry meme is user engagement. they want you in the platform, using the platform, and being invested in the platform. Its how they harvest your data, which they either sell or use to get even more user engagement. Steam isnt just a webbrowser, its a social media hub. Or at least, valve wants it to be.
>why would anyone want gamer data. we just talk about vidya
they want your background data. your click rate, your typing style. they want to know what your mouse is doing, and why its moving that way. this information can be compiled to figure out what makes you happy, sad, buy more, or spend less. It sounds full blown schtizo but this kind of shit is the backbone of the industry.
While those gay stickers and profile animations mean nothing to oldgays, zoomzooms and generation alpha think they are awesome. They think they are awesome because they never experienced the era of user-generated oc. They didnt grow up with free photoshop or flash. They didnt grow up when vidya was just vidya and you could add your own custom skins and maps and mods. So when you dangle some rainbow shit infront of them they think its heckin awesome and really appreciate it. Its why they love discord so much. And valve wants steam to be a discord competitior. Why learn how to type out complex emotes (^_~)/ when some third worlder has already made a hundred pepe emojis for you to buy at the low price of a nitro subscription. Now you can be part of the heckin gaming community and use all the memes like your favorite streamer.
so corporation hires people to make ui. to update ui. to push ui. new ui drives new user engagement and allows for more data collection oppertunities. adding more features pushes potential market share.
oh my source? I just made it all up.
>they want your background data. your click rate, your typing style. they want to know what your mouse is doing, and why its moving that way. this information can be compiled to figure out what makes you happy, sad, buy more, or spend less. It sounds full blown schtizo but this kind of shit is the backbone of the industry.
And this is why 8 tracking AI from steam are running at the same time.
This is basically getting a unique fingerprint of how you type.
TRY TO BLOCK THAT SUPER COOKIE!
>While those gay stickers and profile animations mean nothing to oldgays, zoomzooms and generation alpha think they are awesome.
We know and this is why we hate future generations.
Nothing wrong with stickers as long as they can be custom made like in Telegram. I like that I can express myself with memes and my own drawings when chatting with people.
However the official-only/paid-only sticker model that discord and steam have is pure cancer and for some reason zoomers absolutely love that shit. They would literally prefer to buy cancer like discord nitro than to make their own sticker set or even just post pngs with transparent backgrouds which in discord are presented exactly like the stickers.
>Nothing wrong with stickers as long as they can be custom made like in Telegram.
Back in the day we called it dragging a GIF/PNG/JPG to the client window you zoom zooms!
>r some reason zoomers absolutely love that shit.
Because they are the most cancerous corporation worshiping generation.
They literally are immune from ever questioning their corporate overlords.
You trying to explain to them that back in the day we made our own files and reaction pictures and copied what other people used and posted them around gets the zoomers to only shout
>Boomer boomer !
They literally will not listen to you telling them that we did all of this for free and got it for free and it was unable to be removed by the corporation controlling the service.
>Back in the day we called it dragging a GIF/PNG/JPG to the client window you zoom zooms!
It's way more convenient to have your own custom stickers in a folder within the client itself and be able to instantly use them from all devices. Im not gonna have access to my reaction images folder all the time.
>Im not gonna have access to my reaction images folder all the time.
Anon ....
>Folder

I agree that having a quick launch of this folder in the application is a good option however we will never get this it will be payed stickers only.
easier maintenance, at least if you want to add newer stuff. the new ui immediately got hardware acceleration for linux/mac, new overlay, notes, notifications, etc. it sucks because it's written in react
How is re-doing something from scratch every couple of years less maintenance? I'm not talking about steam specifically, just this general trend in the software industry, websites included.
in the case of steam, vgui was probably massive spaghetti at this point (like all their games), that's why csgo uses js for its ui as well. it's not really from scratch, steam still uses c++ under the hood for some, if not most things, it's just written in react - everything written in react is slow af in my experience
They could have thrown some money at QT and used that. Instead of jeetware webshit.
Webshitters were just funny incompetent when they were shitting up the web, now they have me thinking an AI apocalypse might not be so bad if it destroys all webshitters.
>MUUUUH hardware accelerated UI
is a complete and utter meme for 2D applications
ok
>is a complete and utter meme for 2D applications
They hated him because he spoke the truth.
New steam UI is better tho
moron, it's awful.
maybe you didn't like the colors, but they could have easily adapted the padding and colors for you. the new UI is absolutely garbage.
i like it. sorry
You bloody bich basterd you must do the steamful
mine is using ~800mb right now
as long as it doesnt start taking multiple gbs then idc. ram is cheap and most of the time i use only 30-50% of it, plenty to spare
steam is fine, y'all have skill issues
>double click the shortcut to the .exe on my desktop
>play the game
valveBlack folk will never be this free
click the shortcut to the .exe on my desktop
>>play the game
Basically this.
It was really a comedy show when the steamies did have a meltdown over EGS
>Bb-b-b-b-b I now have 2 launchers 🙁
>How am I supposed to play my games now? 🙁
Ganker thread on Ganker
Rakesh, it only uses 62mb of memory on my Windows 10 install.
Already added to the long list of shitware built upon the most god-awful framework known to humanity
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromium_Embedded_Framework#Applications_using_CEF
This trend is complete homosexualry.
You could just close it when you are not using it.
Installed the flatpak on my Linux shitposting laptop. It uses over 1 GB and uses about as much CPU off screen as Firefox on screen showing youtube. Goddamn, that's some fricking bullshit jeetware.
Also I have to flatpak kill the thing to get it to really go away.
With all this noise I wonder why nobody's made a CES/Electron that's actually made for program UI instead of being a slightly gutted browser.
I know it's difficult to make an HTML+CSS renderer, but SOMETHING's gotta be able to solve the Electron issue while being fast and practical enough.
Or is it the usage of Electron and people just being trash at it?
CEF/Electron*
You can't make HTML, CSS and JavaScript efficient. This like people asking why doesn't someone make a fast version of Python that is completely backwards compatible. IT CAN'T BE DONE.
>guyz!!! look what some nobody posted on steamcommunity.com!
OP is a homosexual
i left it open for an hour. are there just blatant memory leaks everywhere?
>using microsoft edge unironically
shame
why wouldn't i? it was included with windows 11 and it just works
it's basically just worse chrome
get a browser that actually lets you use adblockers and maybe, and this is a long shot considering you're using windows, doesn't sell your information
no idea what you're talking about. i have ublock origin on edge and it runs just fine
it does? i kinda assumed the shit chrome pulled on adblockers affected all chromium-based browsers.
>why wouldn't i? it was included with windows 11 and it just works
The level of this zoomerism.
>why wouldn't i? it was included with windows 11 and it just works
So is internet explorer in windows XP.
I only just installed Steam again (new Satisfactory update just dropped) and while reading a thread about Steam Client Webhelper, the Steam on my own computer popped up an error message that Steam Client Webhelper had crashed. This is with a fresh install of Steam that had only been running for a few minutes at that point.
To be fair, Steam has been trash since day one all those years ago.
Valve has no idea how to write code, but they were the first to capture the market and now like with Windows there isn't much choice in what you use.
I mean you could not play games (lol) or you could use the (even worse) Epic store, but otherwise you kind of have to use Steam.
Stdout/stderr?
What?
A program crashed and you don't even check if it output any message? Literally anything could cause your steam to crash.
32-24GB max ram has been the norm since 2012 atleast, I assume used DDR3 has gone down in price because of everybody moving onto DDR4/DDR5 builds.
Why is there a constant 0.5 - 1.0% CPU utilization while the program is just sitting in tray doing nothing?
God just let me launch games without your shitty modern blazingly fast gpu accelerated web based ui. Can I just type command in the terminal and get my game working?
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/1040
Reminder this issue has been open for 10 years. Valve does not care about you linux chuds

your battle has barely started
support is going to be increasingly waning in the next few years, where you'll struggle to browse the internet or even plug in your new iphone 27S.
