Steam is either Chromium Embedded Framework or Electron. Can't remember which (they're both basically the same).

        yup
they removed all VGUI parts from it

Steam uses Chromium Embedded Framework, which is Electron without the Node.js part. That's also the reason that they're dropping Windows 7 and 8 - because Chromium is.

What i dont understand is why these companies dont just design their own UI? Valve is a multi BILLION dollar company, designing a fast and sleek UI would cost peanuts for them and increase user satisfaction by alot. Hire 50 decent programmers for 100k a year, let them work on a UI for 2 years and bam, amazing UI for 10 million dollars, almost irrelevant loss of profits considering they earn hundreds of millions of dollars a year
Is there something im not understanding here?

They did before for the main ui and big picture mode. It used SDL and it ran very well everywhere. But they then wanted to "modernize" the ui and the people that made the previous ui probably no longer works at valve. The only ones remaining are incompetent web devs.

Because making a web browser from scratch is unironically harder than making an entire Operating System.

It's way easier to use existing framework to construct what is basically a desktop web app running on top of the browser's engine.

Think about it. Even Microsoft dropped Explorer and Edge is just Chromium.

Apple is the only one who has their own browser because they are autistic and won't give up and it shows, because Safari is by far the least supported browser in modern day and the one where sites break most often.

Then the question is does Steam really have to run an entire browser inside it? They can regulate everything Steam shows so why not make it simple like just basic HTML rendering or something custom?

That's just because Microsoft is run by a pajeet and they were outsourcing everything they could. Win10 took ten years to get as many changes as other Windows' versions got in their 3 year development cycles.

Because the people in charge are just as moronic as the people making the UIs. At least Steam UI works, Epic Store UI tends to freeze up for like 10 seconds every time I open it. That's a company making the most advanced game engine in the world and they can't make a little shop window run without constant freezes

Because it's notoriously hard to make UI natively, harder to make it appear hip and modern (material and shit like that) and even harder to make them appear in the same way across all platforms.

As someone who worked with Windows API to create UI I can tell you that you need to put in a few millions easy right off the bat just to be able to have a working non-production ready prototype. It is unironically much easier to just hack together HTML components that basically live in a DOM tree in the known and familiar web run time that people know how to work with. This is why everything is web-first now, even on desktop, it just saves money and time.

While you might be throwing millions of dollars at developing your own native custom thing, the competitor will have already pushed it to prod and the average end user will probably not care.

How are you going to run that UI in browser? Do you want to compile it to wasm and reimplement entire rendering engine inside a browser that has its own rendering engine? Or do you want to have two separate UI frameworks that has to look the same despite running on separate engines?
This is so much more work and maintainance cost for barely any actual gain. If you have a website styles in css and html, then you might as well make the rest of UI in css and html.

Denuvo games never ask for admin rights and don't install additional drivers on kernel modules. Cracks, on the other hand, do tend to ask for admin rights, mostly because repackers add that manifest to their exes - and because they may want to subvert DRMs and debuggers running in userspace.

                >I'd much rather play the fricking game on a variety of different maps
Have you considered the concept of changing the 24/7 server?
You know to discover a different map?
Like we did back in the day?

Can zoomer really not simply switch the server they are on?
                What is it with zoomers?
                >Only play 1 game artistically non stop (minecraft or fortnight )
                >Is hostile when people suggest he changes the game to a different one

                >Only plays on 1 server non stop
                >Is hostile when people suggest he changes the SERVER to a different one

                >on a variety of different maps
I'm not cucking for the TF2 community however do you not have servers who have maps who rotate? I remember them back in the day.

                Anonymous

If you take 1 second to stop seething about imaginary zoomers you'd realize that TF2 community servers are literally all I just listed. No servers have actual map rotations anymore, except Uncletopia which is infested with tryhard competitive wannabes overlooked by troony admins who will ban you from all of their servers for the slightest politically incorrect offense (no sprays or custom mods allowed on these servers too btw). All, and I mean ALL of the 24/7 servers either run 2fort, turbine, or Dustbowl which are all terrible maps and get grating after 30 minutes of play for anybody with an IQ above 80. MAYBE you'll get Badwater/Upward, but even those maps get tiring after a while.
Everything else is custom gamemode cancer like deathrun or Slender Fortress, so the only way to play Vanilla TF2 in the current year with a map rotation is Valve's Casual mode that is infested with bots that they do literally nothing about. Or you can go play TF2 Classic which is nice.

                >custom gamemode cancer
Yes I understand you since I remember counter strike turning into this. No game only random mod shit.

Either way it looks like the TF2 community is dead.

This seemed strange since pirated one works without issues so I traced API calls and it basically doesn't run because legit one plays some stupid video as the menu background wile pirated one has that shit ripped out to make it leaner.

Exactly why I won't spend any time diagnosing it. There is a 100% chance it's nothing that I did and nothing I can fix, so why bother. If it makes a habit of crashing then I'll worry about it. Once you copy an error message from program output you have committed yourself to fixing it.
That sunk cost could mean hours of your time are now dedicated to fixing it. The more time you spend the more determined you will be to fix it.
But it's Steam. It's broken shit. You probably won't be able to fix it, and there will be a Steam update within 48 hours anyway which may or may not include a fix.
Meanwhile a post on Ganker is relatively noncommittal, in the sense that I won't feel bad if I don't return to a thread.

For any fellow anons on Windows 7, you can return to the old UI by adding -vgui to your steam shortcut (pic related).
Additionally, if you use any custom skins you will be able to continue using them.
If you're used to using SteamFriendPatcher to replace the library&friends UI, you need to use 0.0.9 as the next update removed pre-win10 support.

Here's a direct link to the correct version:

There are more Steam users with 8GB than 32GB.

I actually have 32GB but I still hate it when incompetent devs do their best to make that obsolete as quick as possible.
32GB is already 32 times as much as I actually need for anything I'm doing if software was written efficiently.

A lot of that is that modern "easy" programming languages encourage terribly anti-performant code design, and even with "fast" languages like C++ or C# if you use Unreal or Unity you're still encouraged to do stupid shit like run blocking tasks on the main thread and use garbage collection.
Basically all of the tooling available to game designers who dont' want to make their own engine, forces them to do everything the slowest possible way. That's why computers that can do trillions of calculations per second bog down with 8-bit style side scrollers made in the last couple years.

People ask "why do you need so much RAM"
It's because programmers in their devops budget have machines with an amount of RAM and they use it.
I try to target double what a typical work machine has so my PC is guaranteed for 5-7 years.

Everything being fricking browser-based and web browsers now being "CACHE IT ALL IN RAM AND NEVER CLEAN THAT", 32GB can find itself loaded up beyond 10-12GB.
This is a nuSteam freshly restarted, opening the store page and going through the "discover queue" list.
That webhelper process with the 1% CPU use just builds and builds RAM allocation until it hits 1.2GB.

But I've been in the habit of shutting down Steam when I dont need to play for years now. Steam absolutely RAPES your CPU idle and wastes 3+ watts constantly. Fricking joke of a program.

    >dude just buy more ram it's cheap
remember that even if you have 4 DIMM slots you're most likely going to have to sell it and buy 2x16 because memory controllers on most non-high-end mobos will shit itself and won't let you clock as much, probably won't even run the XMP profile - especially on AMD boards from the last 5 years
not to mention the issues with mixing up different sticks brands/dies

      Anonymous

      >memory controllers on most non-high-end mobos
      Uhhhh
It's in the CPU since Sandy Bridge/AM2, I think.
Anyway. My Z77 hosts 24GB just fine because of bent socket pins, so 32 is out of the question. The previous one, AM3, ran 32GB alright.
      >not to mention the issues with mixing up different sticks brands/dies
The "issues". Absolute consoomer take. Buy a second hand RAM, or sticks from ebay, or sticks from Aliexpress, install them, they work. That's it. Leave the "issues" scaremongering to QVL composers @mobo vendors payroll.

        Anonymous

It's not scaremongering, the memory controller chiplet on Zen is fricked and can't clock as high or even run XMP profiles if you use 4 sticks. This is a well known issue.

          Anonymous

I don't see it, looks like 4 sticks make a slight improvement of 10%. Nor do I see a reason to go above 3200MHz since mem speed increase offers diminishing returns. Even 3000MHz will do, as a baseline of a solid performance in 2023.

            Anonymous

depending on a game a RAM overclock can give you as much performance uplift as CPU or GPU overclock.
plus it barely changes power usage, making it the most efficient way to gain performance.

        Anonymous

        >The "issues". Absolute consoomer take.
it might straight up not work. the part of not being able to run XMP with 4 slots taken is very common on most AM4 boards
for example i have E-die clocked to 3600mhz at lower than stock latency. i very much doubt i would achieve the same with 4 sticks of the same RAM, and it would straight up be impossible with mixed dies.
        >muh % of performance
zen cpu performance is tied heavily with ram clock speed, so you would lose performance across 90% of the games even if you doubled your ram, unless they used more than 16gb (which most don't, at least yet)

          Anonymous

          >i very much doubt i would achieve the same with 4 sticks of the same RAM, and it would straight up be impossible with mixed dies
You don't need 3600 on Zen 1/2/3 to begin with. IF clocks are not designed for that, I checked them just this spring. Linear growth was on CS Go and that's it, for the money spent on 3600 RAM it's possible to get a better CPU for a perf boost everywhere.
So, bottom line is the same: if you need more RAM, don't jerk off over MHz because by the time you NEED more, it's a dead platform. Go ahead and sell you high-spec kits to some weirdo necromancer overclocker, purchase a ton of chinkshit RAM and forget about needing more ram by trading 5-10% of the performance.

            Anonymous

            >IF clocks are not designed for that
lol, there's no reason to not have as high IF clock as possible, given it's stable
            >for the money spent on 3600 RAM
just get non-shit die and oc it yourself, i got 3000mhz e-die and it works fine on 3600CL14. same price as your standard 3200mhz, even
            3600mhz are barely more expensive
            >purchase a ton of chinkshit RAM and forget about needing more ram by trading 5-10% of the performance.
if you need more RAM for whatever your usage is then true, but for gayming alone that's a moronic opinion, you'll end up losing performance just to be able to brag about chrome allocating 16gb instead of 8gb

depends on board/cpu. check your mobo specs because the cheapest ones might have max 64gb.

I will NEVER understand the need for constantly overhauling UIs of software, especially when the new version is almost always objectively worse. The old steam UI was perfectly fine. What exactly does the new one improve? I can kinda rationalize it for big bloated companies that do it just because they need to find some busywork for their teams of JS pajeets, but Valve is a private lean company with no outsourced poo teams AFAIK.
Can someone who does UI/frontend shit please explain this to me? Why are UIs only ever getting worse?

updating the ui is just an excuse to slide in more dystopian botnet/spyshit. you get big shiny update, you see new ui, you dont think about whats going on in the background.

      >learn how to do webshit ui
      >oldgays retire/get proomooted
      >get hired to replace them

we live in a self perpetuating cycle of garbage in, garbage out. the current industry meme is user engagement. they want you in the platform, using the platform, and being invested in the platform. Its how they harvest your data, which they either sell or use to get even more user engagement. Steam isnt just a webbrowser, its a social media hub. Or at least, valve wants it to be.

      >why would anyone want gamer data. we just talk about vidya

they want your background data. your click rate, your typing style. they want to know what your mouse is doing, and why its moving that way. this information can be compiled to figure out what makes you happy, sad, buy more, or spend less. It sounds full blown schtizo but this kind of shit is the backbone of the industry.

While those gay stickers and profile animations mean nothing to oldgays, zoomzooms and generation alpha think they are awesome. They think they are awesome because they never experienced the era of user-generated oc. They didnt grow up with free photoshop or flash. They didnt grow up when vidya was just vidya and you could add your own custom skins and maps and mods. So when you dangle some rainbow shit infront of them they think its heckin awesome and really appreciate it. Its why they love discord so much. And valve wants steam to be a discord competitior. Why learn how to type out complex emotes (^_~)/ when some third worlder has already made a hundred pepe emojis for you to buy at the low price of a nitro subscription. Now you can be part of the heckin gaming community and use all the memes like your favorite streamer.

so corporation hires people to make ui. to update ui. to push ui. new ui drives new user engagement and allows for more data collection oppertunities. adding more features pushes potential market share.

oh my source? I just made it all up.

Nothing wrong with stickers as long as they can be custom made like in Telegram. I like that I can express myself with memes and my own drawings when chatting with people.
However the official-only/paid-only sticker model that discord and steam have is pure cancer and for some reason zoomers absolutely love that shit. They would literally prefer to buy cancer like discord nitro than to make their own sticker set or even just post pngs with transparent backgrouds which in discord are presented exactly like the stickers.

Because they are the most cancerous corporation worshiping generation.

They literally are immune from ever questioning their corporate overlords.
You trying to explain to them that back in the day we made our own files and reaction pictures and copied what other people used and posted them around gets the zoomers to only shout
          >Boomer boomer !

They literally will not listen to you telling them that we did all of this for free and got it for free and it was unable to be removed by the corporation controlling the service.

easier maintenance, at least if you want to add newer stuff. the new ui immediately got hardware acceleration for linux/mac, new overlay, notes, notifications, etc. it sucks because it's written in react

How is re-doing something from scratch every couple of years less maintenance? I'm not talking about steam specifically, just this general trend in the software industry, websites included.

in the case of steam, vgui was probably massive spaghetti at this point (like all their games), that's why csgo uses js for its ui as well. it's not really from scratch, steam still uses c++ under the hood for some, if not most things, it's just written in react - everything written in react is slow af in my experience

I only just installed Steam again (new Satisfactory update just dropped) and while reading a thread about Steam Client Webhelper, the Steam on my own computer popped up an error message that Steam Client Webhelper had crashed. This is with a fresh install of Steam that had only been running for a few minutes at that point.
To be fair, Steam has been trash since day one all those years ago.
Valve has no idea how to write code, but they were the first to capture the market and now like with Windows there isn't much choice in what you use.
I mean you could not play games (lol) or you could use the (even worse) Epic store, but otherwise you kind of have to use Steam.
