Along with the aforementioned proposed title of "In The Red", you have the first light novel and artbook comments. Kamiya played it up heavier with the cameo in Viewtiful Joe.
The anime, and moreso the audio drama, added some extra writing behind that characteristic by framing it as Dante willingly keeping himself indebted to people and not really caring to accrue wealth even when given the chance.

That's my point, it doesn't. His skill and confidence are solid enough that he can be allow himself to be the focus of a goof. He doesn't need to overcompensate afterwards to "prove" that he's cool despite it because he already knows he is.

5 is easily the best DMC game, it's not even close

I don't see anything about him being a loser, just that he has some insecurities. Wikipedia page for DMC1 says Kamiya intended Dante as a character who would pull a mischievous prank so he can endear himself to people, so I see why he would practice "indebtedness".

It isn't very much of a Dragon's Dogma adaptation beyond just having a pawn and the protagonist being Arisen in name only, if you remove both of these aspects it is just a gritty medieval anime with plenty of sex and death.
