Not sure it does. Your imaginative capacity dimishes, you experience too much so things become less exciting. Moreover you're very aware of game mechanics and production, there's no unknown magic.

        >can be dealt with in a number of ways from fighting, stat/skill checks, or just paying him off

I completely memory holed Keeng Ra'at despite remembering the rest of the rats in Klamath and Brain. I don't get why people even b***h about the references when the first bosses players are intended to encounter say everything about the games themselves

it was okay. then nv came along and there was hardly a reason to go back to it
it set up a very good infrastructure for a casual rpg (special, stats, perks etc) then bethesda threw it all away with 4 to make it even more dumbed down than it already was. bethesda keeps trying to punch above their weight and it fricking sucks. them and their engine are only kinda good at one fricking thing and instead of refining that they keep sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.

Perhaps I should elaborate further. The base fallout 4 is not very good, and I think you can agree with that. However with mods the game easily becomes the best fallout in the series.

It's distasteful and bleak just like the older fallouts were sometimes, and it's the only part on Fallout 3 in which you can debate with your peers what are the better choices, that's exactly what makes New Vegas so memorable.

Oh this thread is actually active unlike the ones from yesterday. I enjoyed the game, mostly the side content, but it was just ok or a little above average at best. story's dumb, tries too hard, killing a lot of the believability of it. Map's kind of shit, most of the left side sucks having nothing going on which is another problem with this game. NV kind of suffers from as well, but it's way worse in FO3, a lot of stuff is out of the way but not in fun or creative ways, yet stuff that isn't out of the way are usually the very strong weapons like the fricking Lincoln's reapter which is right next to a settlement in the ruins, Underworld, near a main quest and also has a quest pointing to it, given to by someone in Rivet City, A main settlement. The only other two things are armor pieces the takoma cap (extra melee damage) and lag-bolts armor (+10 AP. Broken Steel endgame required). Other than those 2 things the ruins are pointless and don't give you anything besides muh world building/pointless lore. Perks in FO3 suck making builds feel samey, but at least you get 1 every level. Speech check variety also sucks, A lot of them should've just been Barter checks, but I see why they did it, not a lot of npc to get checks from and if some were barter it would make speech a fricking shit skill. Back to builds, Luck is more OP in this game than NV, especially shotgun crits, and it's probably one of the only ways to really sort of enjoy this game in the endgame because it's very fun and I mean very very fun and totally not a slog to fight 2 albino radscorpions at once! I love resource drains! Don't forget these things, which are very easy to fight yet a slog, plus reavers and overlords become way too common at max level, how fun! Still it's not a bad game the more I think about it the more the saying "Oblivion with Guns" is true, still easily one of the more enjoyable bethesdaslop. It gave us NV and NV would give back with TTW which is best of both worlds, just play that.

    >How the frick is liking it "contrarian"?
    because this
    >bestselling, best reviewed, most award-winning
happened when there was nothing better, and people were desperate for anything.
it was not worthy of any of the praise at the time, and sure as hell did not get any better with age.

Ganker says this about every year. 2008 had no shortage of good games.

Same with any GTA before 5 where people act like these weren't the single biggest AAA titles of their day but some forgotten indie masterpieces nobody but them played

Fallout 3 and NV are both shit. I can say NV at least tried not to be shit but what they had to work with was fundamentally bad and its obviously unfinished. Siding with anyone other than NCR locks you out of like half the game.

I don't think anyone plain liking it is contrarian, I loved it when it came out. Unironically called off of work to stay home and play it some more, something I wouldn't have done had I known how awful it gets toward the end. People who like FO3 simply aren't experienced enough with other games to compare and contrast, which is what leads everyone else to dislike it now. Now people who PREFER it over other games that simply did better and clap their ears closed to any and all criticism of it, those are the contrarians.

It was very unique when it came out. There are more games like it these days. And on reflection it kinda sucked in many ways. Still, design wise it's actually better than Fallout 4
