FF as a series, is one that always tried to reinvent the wheel even after their biggest success (FFVII) but I would argue there were always elements of the series that stood out and kept the spirit of the series which kept the fanbase interested. The main thing as of late (omitting XIV as I know little about it) with XV and XVI is that they simply dont know what they want to be. XV is a frankenstein of a project which literally throws shit at the wall and see what sticks while XVI just gives me an air of trying to be 'mature' to pander people who make fun of the series while also alienating the og fanbase.
XIV has a lot of the soul of older FF in it, but its also as approachable as a 20ft brick wall to new players due to expansion bloat, abandoned systems and a weird sense of disdain from SE.
All that soul is lost because it's just so fricking boring to play. I don't know how mmogays do it.
It does get better later in but the early combat for ARR is dogshit, and if I was a new player I couldn't get through it, as a result I cant recommend the game to anyone. The sad thing is the combat used to be better than what it is now, but they culled out a lot of shit leaving ARR as a 123 simulator for 20+ hours.

DQ12 will sell well because it's Dragon Quest, it's a series that knows what it wants to do and knows what the audience wants, it's a series made with a very specific formula in mind and a clear identity, a lot of it is indeed clout but it's clout the series earned through 40 decades of being simply Dragon Quest.
You can't say the same about FF, a series born and bred as a copycat, and which always tried to copy somebody else's homework while adding a couple of shitty "original" answers to pretend it didn't.
Unlike DQ, FF never bothered building an identity for itself or an audience, it always tried to ride the wave of whatever is popular at the moment to attract the most customers, but most of these customers are discarded with almost every game, because FF never iterates upon itself, at best it rehashes previous games, but doesn't build on them, because it has really nothing to build upon in the first place, it's a barebones series with zero effort in the game aspect and glued together by obscene production values in terms of graphics and marketing.
And that kind of worked back in the mid 90's, when they had an entire market to themselves since nobody else had the means or confidence to compete, to set higher standards, nowadays things are different, FF has been exposed times and again as a fundamentally lacking series and despite the massive amount of propaganda more and more people have wisened up.

I think XVI will do alright enough in the long term. A lotta people, myself included, took a real "wait and see" approach with it. No one wanted to pre-order and commit early since pretty much everyone thought it'd be another Forpoken or XV situation. IE: Buggy, messy and sorta meh.
I think it's a fine enough action game now that I've got my hands on it. Probably should've been labeled as a spin-off instead of the next numbered game though. The combat's competent, if somewhat lame with how it sloooowly seems to dole out powers. And it's not exactly the most challenging game ever. A really solid 7 that could've been an 8 or 9 easily with just a few tweaks.
Combat is watered down dmc, and theres that big lul of side quests in the middle to slow you down, but i enjoyed the story overall. I liked what they did with Cid and Mid. I literally beat it last night finally. Will probably go for the plat sometime next year during a slow period of games im interested in.

Problem with this is that in one fell swooop pretty much taken a dump on everything from regular combat to crafting.
There's no reason to scavange or even purchase crafting parts since all there is one more powerful weapon to craft and as long as you have done side quest you can craft it. Now if for example status elements still existed you'd have the option of 3 swords ones thats say elemental, non element and maybe one that has say a drain effect. Now all of a sudden maybe you want to craft all three so you frick off and either spend Gil or scavange.
Whatever frick everything that's to say has already been said I won't continue.

And on top of that while some people hate it very loudly online, it also has the 2nd strongest fanbase behind the original FF7 if you look at numbers for things like fanfics and cosplays. The biggest issue is making it PS5 exclusive with no real PC port in sight. PS5 is still a relatively limited console and has been for most of 16's development time. SE is also going to be extremely moronic and take Epic money instead of going to Steam where people would actually buy it. The other big issue is that it is too similar to XIV

Eh, it was alright. I personally had way more fun/enjoyment with FFXV. I only put 60+ hours into FFXVI. I put over 100+ hours into FFXV and just felt like I had more fun with it.

It's honestly kinda funny when you think about it this way:
Baldur's Gate 3 is currently very successful not only for being a good game, but also because PCgays were starving at the time (No big releases), meaning that FFXVI could've have been super successful if they were on PC at the time.
Yoshi-P fricked up real bad for not putting the game on PC which is currently having a boom in Japan and the entire world as a whole.
BG3 is selling becuase it's a good game, even if it's not the kinda game you like it's objectively really fricking good.
XVI has the same issues most JRPGS have, it's not a -real- RPG. You're role in the story has little more impact than your role in a movie
My playthrough of the game is identical to yours outside some minute details, to make matters worse the game is 50~60% cutscenes.
Ideally PC would be the only option with the rivalry being AMD vs Nvidia not PS vs xbox
