bit of a toss up, I played Fallout last year, so I am thinking of maybe going with 2. however I also would really like to play 4, seems like my kind of game.

Sounds comfy. F4 isn't as bad as people say, just don't expect deep RPG elements at all.
I'm going into it expecting sandbox miniature city builder and some Fallout set dressing.
Make a toin coss, and go for whatever.
Id recommend giving 2 the first go, then 4.
Not because of chronology or some shit, but simply because it takes a lot less time to finish the game compared to 4, especially if you decide to play on survival since taking a hike from point A to point B can take you up to half an hour until you get the Vertibirds, as well as lose a lot of time building settlements.
If you are starting with 2, you can either go vanila or go with the next mods. They are pretty good, and add plenty to the game, but be warned that the devs were homosexuals and slightly altered the cursing in the dialogue, but thats it:

It unlocks some quests and areas that were cut, a bunch of bugs, some endings that were bugged, but most important for me, you can now get 2 side hoes to frick besides having your wife (which gets a bubblehead now, and better commands for fighting and sex), as well as a bunch of other disposable meatshields if you like.
I have the Community Edition from Github, but I am considering the restore content mod instead. I expect FO2 to be a game I want to replay. I don't really feel that way about FO1. I did like everything. I only missed out on the vault close to vault 13 because it was bugged, and crashed the game in my save. I even backtracked to the hub with power armor and shot me up some deathclaws for kicks.
One more thing, if you gonna play 2, remember to not make your build suck.
Put a decent amount of points in either melee or unarmed, then small guns.
Otherwise, the temple is just gonna filter your build.
I learned from another thread that I could loot the town for stuff like a gun before going into the temple? also, you can run past enemies inside instead of fighting too, right? melee seems like a waste in these games, because there's three or four gun types, and plentiful ammo throughout.

You don't need to put any points into melee and unarmed if you are only going to use those in the temple.
Either run away from every enemy or simply hit the enemy once then run out of their reach, then rinse repeat.
