Steam Deck obsolete $1500 PC that's a lie if I had ever seen one
If you want to game outside chair get beast PC and low edge device like smartphone with streaming same latency as steam deck anyway
Steam deck is not the greatest that happened to PC its GPU

Steam deckies have cult issues tbh its us vs them mentality even got banned by some angry janny like this

                [...]

before for telling that wait a sec that's a bot
Modern gen phones can emulate better than Steam deck with even better battery life its insane
One of the most common games shown in steam deck threads for battery life is Light Novels and old emulation games which can run at android for longer and better than steam deck
Only games Modern gen phones can't play natively or emulated is recent modern gen AAA games but those games are mostly slops so no point playing them even steam deck struggles to play recent modern gen AAA games with cope such as 720p FSR below Low-Med or settings optimized for deck
I can emulate old PC games and other games with same quality settings like deck with 1 - 3 hrs more battery life and much more portable than steam deck so steam deck advantage is reduced only saving grace for steam deck is PC mods even then its pain in the ass to mod it should be called tinkers device
I think steam deckies struggle to understand that their niche use case is not applicable for every player and people no point doing that bs

                [...]
The deck is a PC. You didn't refute that

Deck is Ultra Mobile Personal Computer not a full fat Personal Computer or even full a UMPC
If you want to argue deck is a PC then it should have both mouse and keyboard peripherals which deck only have for mouse with trackpads
Smartphones don't go parading around as Personal Computer even if it can function as personal computer with USB C dock like steam deck
Deck is hybrid of console + UMPC so it should called be ultra mobile personal console

You must not have played many FPS games on PC, it's near impossible to use a controller once you've used MKB (gyro isn't that good either).
        >they play better on gamepad
How so? Controllers force directional input to be mutually exclusive, making a change in direction far more cumbersome.

I have like 80% winrate in pvp shooters on PC and I agree with the other guy. Shooters are greatly playable with Steam Deck gyro controls and trackpads

          Anonymous

Objectively, flickstick+gyro is superior to mouse, and trackpad is just as good. In practice this isn’t true for most people because most people have spent their entire lives using a mouse. Actually the trackpad is very good for a younger generation who is used to “touch with simulated inertia” due to phone controls. Point being, git gud. If you can’t make flickstick-gyro work it is literally skill issue on your end actually gyro sorta sucks on Deck because moving your controller means moving your screen

            Anonymous

            >flickstick+gyro is superior to mouse
no it isn't but i'll allow your opinion

              Anonymous

It is. Gyro is equivalent to a mouse in terms of precision driven by gross and fine motor control of the wrist. Flick stick is faster and more accurate than large swipes, it provides equal travel time to any angle and requires less muscle memory to achieve the same level of accuracy in placement. The fact that modern “gaming mice” have DPI switch buttons is proof that managing large swipes in conjunction with fine precision is an unsolved problem even for KB/M.

And that’s not even counting the increased movement precision afforded by analogue movement input over WASD (though that does also come with a tradeoff in terms of ease of reversing direction)

                Anonymous

sounds like a lot of bullshit to me.
                t. been gaming for decades just fine without a gyro.

                Anonymous

I didn’t say mouse wasn’t fine. It is fine. Gyro is not such an improvement over mouse that you’d be a fool not to switch right away. But objectively, it is better, which means it’s not a poor substitute for a mouse. Using mouse is fine, you already know it, but someone who takes the time to practice flickstick will eventually be as good or better than if they had devoted that time to mouse instead. It’s not an inherently hobbled input schema like turn-rate analogue.

RTS are dead, platformers are for consoles, and FPS is fine unless you play competitive multiplayer which I have not since pre 2010.

My PC is now a peripheral machine, I still use pc for fighting games since I need fight stick and ethernet, racing Sims since I use a wheel, if space Sims weren't dead I'd play them with a flight stick, mouse is just another peripheral that I only care to use with RTS which is also dead. When I get VR it'll have some use on pc, everything else is deck.

Anybody who works in IT and plays a lot of games for decades, a bit more than filthy casuals, has a PC. And a laptop. There is no question about it. Because technically nothing beats them. What kind of an electronic devices do you think people program on? develop games on? develop systems on? work on? host test servers on? use remote access and virtual machines on?
None of that shit is handheld. it'll only ever be, if one would be able to communicate with the electronic device directly using their brain, completely bypassing any sort of input devices.

TL;DR: again, for the imbeciles. There is no question about PCs being superior in every single way. You want to dispute it, but that is because your goal is to try and sell some garbage to people, who are working in IT. holy kek.

I can play everything I can play on my PC on my steam deck, at higher FPS until 90fps cap. This will always hold true because the deck has low resolution so my PC doesn't have to render as much.

I love my PC but all it does these days is act as a remote machine.

                >I can play everything I can play
Keyword being ((You)). Universally you won't be able to play ANY game you can play on PC on your current gen handheld. It doesn't even matter, if it's an open system. Simply because some games make use of over9000 hotkey combinations, usually good "RPG's" or online "RPGs" like Ultima Online.

TL;DR: Your argument is very situational, which kills the idea of PC being a universal device. Hence PC is better.

                >it's muh PC
np. you do you. Go host a web and a local game server on it, then we'll see how it'll fare during gaming. Btw, open something like the photoshop (kills your shitbox), or more like GIMP lite, and change some textures for your mod for the game X, while you're at it.

So it's a PC but you can undock it to play games in handheld mode, got it.

no. it's a handheld gaming device, that larps as a cucked circumsized PC, while realistically providing no comfy multi-tasking and work related ability. You won't even be able to comfortably access your own home NAS and organize your game, and/or music/movie/porn collection.

The level of seething in the post is so high I wonder if it's a bad faith tendie false flagging. But I digress the use case for a Steam Deck is a portable device to game on. Me being a father of two and full time worker means locking my self in my gaming room (which contains my gaming PC and boardgames) is not a valid option for being a participating parent at least while they are awake. Leaving the room open leaves my valuables at the mercy of a 2 year old who wants nothing more than to touch anything her father likes. This steam deck allows me to play my PC games in the living room and sleep and quick resume where I left off if I need to entertain children help with making bottles for my 7month old and spend time with my wife all at the same time. You cry and seethe that your PC will never be surpassed but my PC has been by the convenience of handheld, quick resume features and the ability to take my library anywhere. You are just not in a point in your life to understand advantages of such a thing you'll make it anon. Don't worry

if you have small ass hands, I don't know what you're doing with a handheld anyway. Yes, I can hold my laptop with one hand and work on it with another one.
also, netbooks exist, but I don't have one.

What I'm saying, is if you absolutely need a portable gayyming device, that will be almost useless for basicly everything else, you can just play on your smartphone or your tablet. Genshin runs on phones, Minecraft does, Roblox does, VR does. In any case an extra handheld is simply a waste of money, if you already have all of the above. (including a PC).

From where I sit, the main appeal of a system like deck is for the 3rd world countries, but they're all playing on their phones anyway, so.

You can set 8 hotkeys per trackpad easily and you have 4 buttons on the backside for modeshifts. That's 32 abilities per trackpad without issues.

I play Tales of Maj'Eyal on mine with sometimes 40 active abilities and it works great.

I'd like to correct you: You can bind 21 hotkeys per trackpad.
                Radial menu allows for 21
                Touch menu allows for 16
                Hotbar menu allows for 16

Sure, but that's hard in any practical context. I find 8 to be the sweet spot, maybe you can do 10 with precision, but any more is pushing it imo.

But yeah you can do 84 per pad (21 times 4 mode shifts) as the theoretical maximum.

Don't worry

You want to dispute it, but that is because your goal is to try and sell some garbage to people, who are working in IT. holy kek.

I think people just forget that there are a lot of people who just prefer the form factor of a handheld over a controller and TV. It's like people who browse the internet / watch video on a phone or tablet instead of the PC/TV. It's why suggestions like use a laptop don't actually convince anyone.

Here's my perspective on it. The wife bought one and never uses it, so I can use it whenever I want. I installed a few games and don't use it either. I've put more gaming time in on my laptop which is admittedly even weaker than the Steam Deck and various consoles because I've been playing games for decades and have multiple generations of consoles gathering dust. I literally used the Wii more last year than the Steam Deck.

How was the Steam Controller Gankerros?
I picked up an 'ock for my 'eck and the Gaben controller is the only thing that has touchpads similar to the default deck layout.
I don't doubt that I'll most likely end up using an Xbox controller most of the time but I would actually like to use the desktop or play PC centric games from my bed. Buying a wireless keyboard and mouse just sounds a little obtuse in comparison.

The deck is a great remote control for a PC and an ok replacement for FPS gaming. I like to shill it for fun but it's a bit lacking in other areas. Second joystick and a proper d-pad would be great.

It's fun to play around with, but overall I'd say there's a lot more negatives than positives. The right touch pad (which is admittedly really good) is all it's got going for it. Even then it's only good in games that don't shit themselves with simultaneous mouse and controller input (like dragon's dogma) since the emulated joystick mode is shit.

Feels like a prototype of something that could have been great.

I disagree about the right stick being better than a stick. My aim in cyberpunk is infinitely better on my deck than on a steam controller because you can turn much more precisely with the stick than the pad.

Target fps being 30 btw, which is what it runs at in consoles. 60 would obviously be nicer but it's a handheld that runs a game that demanding - I may as well be asking it to blow me too.

The deck 1 is already a furnace portable, trying to push it further docked would cause a house fire

That's what the steam link box and a gaming PC is for.

Everyone else seems to love theirs. I hate mine. The button layout cramps my hands, the performance is terrible, the battery life is unforgivable given that performance, and remote play introduces so much latency that it may a well not exist when the broken-ass dock even wants to work with my PC. I'm convinced everyone is pretending to like these things in desperation that it may finally make Linux a viable gaming platform.

Only issue I have is with my tiny hands not reaching the shoulder bumpers, but I just remap L1/R1 to the back buttons.

        Anonymous

The placement of the buttons/d-pad are what do it for me. They're in nonstandard places thanks to the homosexual touchpads they thought were so important to crowbar in and the deck is heavy enough that I'm essentially supporting it with the same thumb I'm trying to manipulate freely. The shoulder buttons are also way too high making switching between them a pain. The sticks themselves are a little loose, kind of like a Dualshock 3 or prior. The whole thing just feels like how not to make a controller, and I was happy with my Wii U for perspective.

        >remote play introduces so much latency that it may a well not exist
Literal skill issue. Mine adds about 8ms of latency which is less than most of HDMI to TV setups add.

Make sure you got a good router and running your deck on 5ghz spectrum.

Running through a ASUS RT-AX86U Pro using only Cat 6 cables. It comes through with artifacting out the ass and with unplayable latency. Use Sunshine instead and it comes through with artifacting out the ass and noticeable but better latency.

No they're not. If the sticks or buttons were down there instead of the touchpads that'd be awful.

          >Running through a ASUS RT-AX86U Pro using only Cat 6 cables
Might be a driver issue with your PC or something then.
If the hardware isn't the problem then its something you did wrong with the software.
