MAFIA IV

The game is in full development. It's a prequel to Mafia: Definitive Edition. Following the story of Ennio Salieri from the late 1800s to just a time just before Mafia: Definitive Edition takes place. The narrative focuses on Salieri and his relationship with Morello, going from boys to men as they enter, and evetually take over the Peppone crime family. Starting in Sicily, the game will progress through time, ending in 1920s Lost Heaven, America.

The mission structure is similar to Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia II. The game is open world with additional side missions and activities to partake outside of the main story. The opening section of the game is set in Sicily and features an open world setting in the same fashion of Uncharted 4, meaning, you can explore and complete optional activities while there but after leaving Italy and progressing the story, you can't go back.

The game is being developed by the remnants of the Hangar 13 studio. This essentially boils down to the original 2k Czech studio staff. Since departed staff that worked on Mafia: Lost Heaven and Mafia II are being brought in to help with the game's vision. The Hangar 13 proprietary engine has been dropped and the studio is now using Unreal Engine 5.

I know all of this because i'm working on the game. Nobody seems to care about Czech staff talking about projects as they can't really enforce rules against us. If you're interested about the game and have questions, ask in this thread. I'll answer anything I know the answer to.

How long has the game been in development? Is it near completion or in development hell?

Development started last year. Mafia IV wasn't going to be our next game but the project we were working on got canned.

I'd estimate it's 2 years away due to the experience of the crew we have and the ease of use of the Unreal 5 engine.

you guys fricked up the ending for mafia 1 definitive edition, it turned the story into a moronic "family first" bullshit instead of the introspection of a guy who got in too deep and his thoughts on the matter, and you gave him a gay heroes death instead of the impactful "meaningless" death. frick you guys, you can't make games for shit, you can't write stories for shit, and you can't even manage your NDA's for shit.

Nothing that didn't need to be. There's a select group of morons that insist the 2 polygon original is better. Everyone else is sane.

the whole ass ending monologue? where he's just like explaining his perspective on his experience as a whole, his morals, how he views the world, and how important values are ect. ect. and then he gets shot like a chump cuz you know, its poetic for someone who's been in the life to die like a rat in the street. they changed that to some dumb frick monologue about how his wife and his daughter, who are in the game for the least amount of time compared to other characters, as the most important thing, then they made it so that he "expected" to get shot, and he tells his family as his guts have fallen out of his stomach, he SHOULD be in shock and dead immediately, he tells them they're safe, and dies like he's just bleeding out from a fricking knife.

Sounds objectively better. I played Lost Heaven on release in 2002. Writing and dialogue was wooden.

i'll give you that its wooden, i won't give you that the ending done in the definitive edition is anything but such shit that it makes mass effect 3 look decent.

pretty sure they canceled it and laid off half the company and the founder quit

The game hasn't been cancelled. The game we were working on before Mafia IV got cancelled. Hence, working on Mafia IV.

Hayden and a lot of the American crew were layed our and moved on to other companies were possible. The studio is now mostly European developers and contains several members that developed the original 2 Mafia games.

What game got cancelled and why

It was a live service game along the lines of apex. I'm not joking. The American side of the company pushed hard for it.

I'm not saying that's why they were laid off but... narrative based games is where we thrive.

How do you intend to address the main criticisms of II and DE, namely the lack of open world content outside the story? Mafia III did the exact opposite and added endless repetition, I suspect this isn't your goal.

When you arrive in America there are several things you can so outside of the main story to entertain yourself and/or make money. E.g.

      - betting on horse races
      - managing rackets
      - side missions from main characters, side characters, and strangers

Just a few examples off the top of my head.

Really the only thing Mafia is missing to make it competitive in the modern world is the criminal empire-building so many people would flock to a game with this kind of setting for. It turns a 12-16hr game into a 40-60hr game, though creating side content that can be fun but also ignorable depending on the player is undoubtedly easier said than done.

          Anonymous

Yes, this is true but it's a careful balance to make a game that's fun instead of grindy, this was the trouble with Mafia III.

Whatever happened to that leak about Mafia Definite Trilogy where Mafia 3 would feature a new mission called "What's Next?" about a new sequel?

Scrapped. The original concept for Mafia IV was a 1970s mob story in Las Vegas.

70s Vegas Godfather II-eque setting sounds awesome, but the developers seem more fond of the golden era gangster 1920s-50s.
          >end of the game Vito is one of the first ever to have RICO charges brought up against him
Hopefully they revisit the idea at some point. I guess it would all depend on if IV is a commercial success or not.

The story was intended to be a homage to gritty 70s films. You play as a guy called Jimmy.

How are you going to deal with the lack of cars and automatic weapons in the time period? Sure they existed but they were nowhere near as available as they were in the 1920s.

      Anonymous

most of the definitive edition weapons are already just anachronistic models straight up taken from mafia 3 that didn't exist in 30s so i doubt devs care much about such details.

      Anonymous

There are many other weapons and modes of transportation. E.g. horse and cart, horse, early cars such as Ford.

why did they choose the late 1800s-1920s?

The mafia as we know it in pop culture really came to be during prohibition in 1920. If have the game is set in the 1910s, arent you guys afraid of stepping on red dead redemption's toes?

Is the stuff with Mafia 3 and Lincoln Clay dead and buried? Not only the story but the gameplay mechanics of being a mercenary rather than a gangster? How did you guys feel about Mafia 3 and Hanger 13?

whats your game going to offer that will stand out compared to other games in the same genre? Youre saying we wont even have an open world game after a certain point?

is there any talk of mafia 5? Theres been a lot of ideas floating around for years about where the story could go and frankly they sound better. Is this a last chance for the mafia series?

      Anonymous

Because this is the time that Ennio Salieri existed in. The mafia as we know it formed around the prohibition, that's correct. However, only covers the modern definition. The mafia has existed within Italy for a very long time.

      Anonymous

The "mercenary" gameplay you experience in Mafia III is exclusive to that game. It fits Lincoln Clay's character.

I said the Italian section of the game is only open world while you're there. After leaving Italy the area is no longer accessible. The Lost Heaven section of the game is always available for exploration.
