Magical Girl TTRPGs

My friends and I are a bunch or weebs and I have a mighty need to run a Magical Girl Game. What TTRPGs are best suited to the genre of equal parts wanton destruction and slice of life moe shit?

Magical Burst used to be good for the creator started injecting his politics into it. I think you can still download the older editions off his website.

Checked out the pdf. I like the setup a lot, though the game itself seems simple at first glance.

Yeah, it's very much meant for a few quick sessions and shorter campaigns. It's not really meant to be a game you play for years like D&D.

Look into OVA. It's simple enough to learn, is a little deeper than it seems, and has built in rules for magical girl transformations.

      OVA is almost moron-proof

I don't get how damage works though. You have to multiply stuff. The power creation is confusing too.

Different stuff gives you a damage multiplier, which applies to the final result of a contested roll. So, say you have a damage multiplier of 2. If you rolled and got a total of 8, for example, and your target tried to defend and got 6, you'd do 4 damage to them (2 x 2).

The Perks and Flaws are just a GURPS-like ad/disad system for making special attacks where the point total is how much Endurance it costs to use it. You make them so you can give your character big named attacks or magic weapons that trade End for more dice or additional effects. It's a little weird to wrap your head around at first because the book does very little to actually explain when you're supposed to make them or how many you should have. Lot of the balancing is on the GM and that's going to be confusing for most people who are playing for the first time.

Just about any superhero game. Just set the point buy to whatever fits your ideas, and make them take the "alternate form" power, whatever the system used calls it, if you want them to transform.
Alternately, any good narrative system. My go-to recommendation is Wushu.

Are we not recommending Big Eyes, Small Mouths anymore? That used to be THE magical girl RPG. That was a few editions ago, though.

    Daisy Chainsaw.
Leans more into Madoka Magica territory, but covers all the magical girl bases and has a fun combat system.

Princess Wing - the mecha musume slash magical girl game got translated by some god given dudes and they even got us the expansion. It's an absolute beauty of a battle system and I cannot recommend It enough

Absolutely “PW”. If you like rock solid combat with light-but-still-impactful slice of life, it’s a must.

BESM kinda sucks IMO, even the tri-stat version. Only reason it was a thing was cuz the alternative was a pure comedy game

      Maid RPG.

Genesys' narrative dice are perfect for a magical girl game.

We even have custom symbols for it!

Love a bit of thematic graphic design, but I am not buying your silly dice.

Use the many free apps if you are willing to demo the system without paying for anything.

        I hope you'll try it!

I've got my share of preferred generic systems, but I'll keep that in mind.
