Magikarp and Gyarados were planned to have convergent species instead of Tentacool and Tenacruel.

>1007: OKAGYARADOSU
The codenames for Toedscool and Toedscruel are still are still "King" (Magikarp's Japanese name is Koiking) and "Gyarados". I'm glad the Tentacool line got some love, but it would've been cool to see a line mimicking Magikarp and Gyarados too.
they intentionally picked the most simple designs to do covergent evos, I cannot imagine them doing gyarados
I could see a lava fish/dragon, but I feel like that's low hanging fruit
I wouldn't say the tentas are simple
What are AKETUBAN and BKETUBAN? I guess it's the paradox Suicune / Virizion, but in that case, what are AAAAA and BBBBB?
AAAA is Roaring Moon
BBBB is Iron Valiant
They made the codenames when they decided they wanted a pair of Paradoxes with a higher BST than the rest and didn't know which mons they'd base them on yet.
And yes, AKETUBAN and BKETUBAN are placeholders for the Suicune and Virizion
Makes sense given how late they're placed in the index numbers. The names for everything else up until the Paradoxes are what the final Pokémon are based on. Before anyone asks, the names are just "Land (Koi)king" and "Land Gyarados" in contrast with "Sea Digda" and "Sea (Dug)trio". Oka is also seen in Cetoddle's line, referred to as "Land Whale".
It was most likely replaced by Tentacool due to Orthworm despite this being the same generation that gave us 3 different dog lines and Pawmo. Cheated out of sandworm Gyarados once again.
On a side note, interestingly, Cyclizar is referred to as "Bike" while its Paradoxes are "A Iguana" and "B Iguana".
AAAA is a fitting name for Roaring Moon.
Another interesting note: Iron Bundle's codename is BKOORI rather than BDERIBAADO, implying that it was placeholder for Ice-type Future Paradox before deciding on Delibird.
*implying that it was a placeholder for an Ice-type Future Paradox
Basically, any Ice-type was up for grabs into becoming a robot. We could've had something like TV-head Eiscue or another Iron Valliant with Glalie and Froslass if it didn't end up being Delibird. Alternatively, it could've just been any Pokémon with Ice replacing another type.
If they had them in the works it's entirely plausible they're going to be DLC
I can see why they changed it though because I can't really see how they would make a "Magikarp" that looks just like Magikarp but lives on land and isn't a fish
It could easily work for Gyarados though, but yeah, that's probably why they changed it.
Probably would have been amphibians.
Like, a giant Gyarados caecilian? That would be great, but again I don't think that could really fit a "Magikarp" without looking too much like a stretch
you could lean in on the flying type for gyara and have the magikarp form be some type of floating magic fish
but it wouldn't be a fish though, that's the whole point of these convergent mons
>Fairy type
Fat snake for magikarp
Long, angy snake for gyarados
I guess I also want to say that perhaps they didn't want it to feel too similar to Wiglett, who is also a convergent mon that is long and snakey
I guess on that note I wonder if Orthworm also had anything to do with it...
tell game freak not to frick with perfection
Land Gyarados
Land Gyarados
WE WERE ROBBED
Is it "oka" like "okashii"? Maybe it was Ghost into Ghost/Dragon.
Oka = land
0947: OKAKUZIRA1
0948: OKAKUZIRA2
That's Cetoddle and Cetitan. Oka = Land, kuzira = whale.
Aww darn. Thanks though.
they prolly nixed it because of orthworm
>/vp/'s ideas of convergent magi-gyara is still fish
You'd think after the mole -> eel and jellyfish -> mushroom the people here would know better.
Maybe it was scrapped because there's Tatsugiri, who kinda looks like it could walk on land with its fins; Cetitan, who is a land-dwelling sea creature; Clodsire, who is kind of a landfish in its own way; and Chi-Yu, who is a fish out of water as well. I imagine it was down to rfake Gyara and rfake Tentacruel as the water-now-land rfake to complement Diglett's land-now-water design. Toedscruel being something besides a fish and already having a mushroom-like shape probably put it over the edge compared to what they'd have to do for Gyarados, which might have ended up too close to Orthworm anyway. Maybe Orthworm was even a redesign of what they had come up with for Gyarados.
Source: my big ass.
Complainers would also bring up that both RFakes are just "long boys", leading to yet another "new form concept is just take Pokémon and make them long lol".
That's true, good point. If one had been an eel and the other a worm they might have felt that was too repetitive.
Anon we have 3 dogs in this gen and a shitton of my mom's birds
Having another landbased aquatic animal wouldnt be too much
Yeah. The other anon who responded to me probably had the right idea. Wugtrio + another longmon might have been too much for the only two rfakes.
Imagine MEGAKARP and Gyarauno
>no ground type sand worm gyarados
ROBBED
>wiener blocked by orthworm
