The MonHun dev teams have an extremely weird & shitty habit of taking iconic orchestral themes & tracks for monsters and then turning them into shitty, forgettable midi tracks in later games. I don't know why they continue to fricking do this when they can (and should) use the orchestrated tracks at their disposal.

wyvern riding is more or less just as mandatory since it showers you in loot, aswell as the free damage you get from it which isnt much to be fair but its still riskless free damage
both are "mandatory" in the same exact way, which is if you are trying to be as efficient as possible, though wyvern riding is (imo) far more fun so i dont mind it as much
wyvern riding also just replace mounting instead of adding 100 new takedowns per hunt

the reason i say its just as mandatory is because it showers you in loot. even if its a dps loss, the sheer amount of fricking drops you get makes it worth it since more loot = less times you will have to farm in the future, which is overall a bigger timesave than the extra dps you get from not using the riding
if you arent using the wyvern riding you are really shooting yourself in the foot in terms of loot efficiency

base Rise you can just do a quick wallbang and be done with it for the rest of the fight if you don't want to deal with it. Tenderizing requires upkeep and you'll probably get a MUCH longer mount that you can't opt of on top of clutch claw mechanics

I wish. If I want to do anything airborne or use switch skills, the monster will usually end up in the riding state where any damage I deal forces me to ride the monster. Just because I can force quit it by ramming it into a wall doesn't mean I can ignore it though.

Mantles were great, they just need to tone down some of them. I think the bigger issue is that they started balancing difficulty around them. Temporal Mantle just popped into existence because they wanted Behemoth to be possible

The fact that they made constant tenderizing mandatory by covering new monsters in shitzones, made constant wallbanging mandatory by giving new monsters almost no, or extremely short downs, was what ruined it. The new moves some weapons got with the claw were fun, wallbanging and tenderizing in itself were fine, but putting them at the forefront ruined everything in the expansion and threw the entire rhythm of the game off-kilter.
Sunbreak literally has wallbanging it's just an item now (Marrionete Spider)

Gore and Shagaru's weapon paths seem to split now so I'm guessing Gold and Silver Raths will split into their own paths as well instead of upgrading from their current rarity 10 regular versions

Normal Tempered monsters were literally just HP and damage buffed with no additional changes. Only some Arch Tempered monsters like AT Nergi got enough changes to be somewhat different fights.

Do MH players usually find a favourite weapon and stick to it in these games or do you experiment? I love the Switchaxe, but I fear I'm missing on on too much fun by not testing new weapons. I already know I suck with counter-based weapons but I've been thinking about dual blades, bow and the shield classes.
Don’t be afraid of stopping story progress to go learn some new weapons. It’s about having fun, don’t limit yourself on that front
Switchaxe is already fun as frick but yeah, I get what you're saying. I'll eventually hop onto dual blade, I think. I did try long sword earlier but I just can't learn proper counter timing. I'm better at dodging attacks, not waiting for them to hit me.
Find another weapon you like and stick with it. I used to main GL exclusively while only playing other weapons here and there, never really committing to any. In GU I decided to pick up a second main so I made a checklist of every monster in the game and made sure I killed all of them with both SA and GL. As of Rise I alternate every quest between both of those weapons and they have an equal usage rate on my guild card

I forgot they made Exhaust SA pretty good in Rise. Conqueress' final upgrade stats seems like one of the better Exhaust SAs too which is nice since the line is so cheap to make
Saxe feels like one of the most internally balanced weapons for the first time. Previously, if a saxe didn't have a power phial, it was borderline useless outside of serious meme builds (I made a crimson fatty saxe set in 4u to try and relive the glory days of 3u slime). Now, saxe has amazing elemental options, useful status weapons, particularly poison when dealing with kush, and a nice array of simple but effective strong weapons.
I don't understand what the different Phial types do for the Switch axe. Do they recharge the sword meter faster in axe mode or something?
Some of the phial types charge faster than the rest yes. Power used to be the go-to in all the previous games but Rise nerfed it hard by making it take longer to charge up.

Get guard and sharpness maintenance skills
Triple poke into shield tackle
Become invincible
Guard 3+, pretty easy to just get 5 right now on gear though
Offensive Guard is nice and comes on a lot of the same shit now
Other than that just some sharpness management
Besides the normal WEX,CB,MT etc. You want to get Guard 3 and Offensive Guard 3. You can also add 1-3 levels of Guard Up if you want to block attacks like Volvidon's farts. Anything over Guard 3 is pointless since Twin Vines gives 2 levels of Guard now.
Twin Vines still sucks pretty bad to keep up even if it has a niche now. A lot of the monsters you'd want more guard for are charge spamming buttholes that'll snap your wire a dozen times in a hunt if you try to keep it up constantly.
There's a lv3 Guard israeliteel that gives 2 points and gear has a lot more Lv3 slots on it now. Just use the Barroth waist or Basarios gloves for 3 points and slot in extra if you need it.

If you fail all of them perform a nova that either OHKO you or if you survive paralyze you
