The trAshnime and its consequences have been a disaster for the Pokemon franchise.
They kept trAsh because he was not a character but an advertising tool. He goes to another region, changes pokemon team, meets the girl on duty, the same formula is recycled.
After Misty, the female protagonists had the role of fanservice: while trAsh focused on pokemon fights, the masculine, the girls were in charge of the feminine such as contests, changing clothes, being sweet and kind to the male protagonist, having scenes with suggestive angles and postures. Iris, Lana and Chloe were the exception to this rule.
For this reason they did not need the other male protagonists.

They are next door neighbors and research assistants of Sycamore constantly chasing each other on skates, pokemon rides and dates throughout the story.
Dianthia stalks them because she wants to film their whole dating relationship with their permission, occasionally employing Ash and TR as a filming crew giving them goodies while they challenge the league (Ash), contest circuit (Jessie) and Battle-mansion (James) all with great success with TR realizing they have become decent trainers.
Ash goes big on Sky battles (he is a Flying type specialist like Lance after all)
The two groups fight off TF multiple times with Calem requesting a mega ring for Serena from the league as his reward since he is the one who got the ring from Sycamore.
Ash really getting tired of romance forgoes the mega ring for a chance all out match with Malva instead.
TR gets a small mansion with a pokemon stable as a reward instead since they like Kalos (they later let orphans live in it in exchange for them helping them out as caretakers while they travel with Ash).
During the final battle with Lysandre Ash still plays the hero persuading Malva to switch sides while TR handle the scientsists and Calem&Serana beat the BBEG.
All parties are commended and granted the right to challenge the E4 afterwards.
Calem and Serana both beat them with Dianthia/Malva retiring, Calem as Champion, Serana as the final E4.
James beats two E4 members surprising everyone as a good Fire specialist.
Jessie beats one E4 member surprising people as a great Ghost type specialist.
Ash manages to beat Calem but rejects the title because Calem deserves it more and can handle the job properly as an adult.

Rest of the anime can stay the same, Alola was actually nice just the plot took a step back.

Go is introduced as an antagonist Ash and TR fight in his goal to capture Mew.
They try to stop him from abusing pokemon.
Galar stuff happens in the background with the team joining the Isle of Armour dojo where they befriend the game protags and the toxic couple as rivals.
Honestly no clue how to continue aside from letting Ash have the world cup after all.
