The only two Sonic games I have purchased as an adult are Generations and Mania, and I had a blast with each of them. You sound very miserable.

how is it copy paste level design, act 1 is a tight recreation of the original stage while still having original level design, and act 2 introduces new mechanics to the point of it being an entirely new zone with the original style. I can understand not liking the reused levels and i do wish there were more original ones, especially since sega wont frick off with reusing green hill zone and shit, but letting that blind you from the immaculate level design is pretty moronic. Especially since this is the first 2d game in like 20 years and is a labor of love from the talented group that made it.

i love how American studio makes a classic Sonic game, it does well, sells a DLC, revives classic era Sonic for people.
Japanese studio see this western gaijin shit, gets pissed off at it, and makes their own classic Sonic game, it mostly fails.
Sonic should have died in the 90s, the mania into forces pipeline was the harshest realization of this.

Yes, the returning levels suck, literally all we asked was for Mania 2 with all-original levels, but Sega couldn't even do that

The returning zones were all great if a bit overplayed(did we REALLY need to see Green Hill and Chemical Plant again?), and the Act 2s of each zone all had original level design anyway.
Returning levels were fine, only one I find weaker than it's debut is Lava Reef, and that's mostly down to how intrinsically tied to the plot it is to 3K in my brain
love being able to use the CD stomping device to cross lava, and the extra mining shit and volcano is rad

people who say that mania reuses level design are being disingeneous because nearly all old zone maps are significantly different and a lot of the act 2s are entirely unique
sure they reuse themes but speaking at a purely gameplay level the game is very close to being entirely unique
Mania is the greatest game in the series gameplay-wise. The physics and level design are comprehensively and thoroughly far bigger and better than any of the previous efforts. The people who hate Mania are genuine unironic autists that seethe because it doesn't have a story, simple as. By the way, Penny's Big Breakaway will surpass whatever 3D Sonic is next.
