It's almost deceptively simple. Everything most usual games do is stripped out but the character building is so much better that it elevates the simple light/heavy attack battles.

I just started two weeks ago. I've been using Ratio, Tinyung, Pela, and Bailu. So I'm kinda struggling with aoe dpsing (I got Bailu from departure and Himeko from losing my 50/50 trying to get Acheron).
As you're new, Aventurine will unironically be a good fit for your team. He also works well with Ratio because his ult debuffs(and if you have his LC it also debuffs). Bailu is a good sustain for now, she's kinda meh on "endgame" but can hold her own.
Jingliu as well would be good, ALTHOUGH playing her without Bronya or Sparkle isn't that good. She REALLY pops off when you have one of the two and I don't think we'll get a better Ice DPS for quite a while.
Jingliu doesnt need Sparkle since she is economic on SP
Jing just wants Bronya and Ruanmei with a healer/ tank.

Contrary to popular belief the maid model is not actually the "new one". HSR maid model is very close to Genshin hags, while HSR hags are considerably taller and curvier.

Star Rail would have been a genuinely cool game if it was allowed to grow it's own franchise, grow it's own community and become a separate game from Honkai and Genshin with it's own story but they kneecapped the game with the "Honkai" title, devs and fanbase.

Whats your appeal with Honkai Star rail? I played few hours, seems ok, but lack freedom of open world that Genshin has where you can climb anywhere, jump etc. HSR seems to only have linear corridors. Any reasons I should be interested in playing it?
Matter of preference. Do you want watered down action rpg or watered down 4-homies-in-a-row? More fantasy based setting or sci-fi shit? An open world to explore until there's nothing left to explore or linear zones that you can just one and done and not have to worry about ever again?
Personally I think I like Star Rail over Genshin for most stuff. I think the setting and direction are a lot more interesting than Genshin and it's written and animated a lot better than Genshin, though that's not saying much. Also making past events permanent is really nice, though you don't get the full rewards for it. Gameplay is whatever, you're playing fricking gachaslop either way at the end of the day so who cares, though I do think Star Rail's grind is a lot worse than Genshin despite having some better QoL to help alleviate some of it. I also prefer Genshin's character designs a bit more than Star Rail's.

From the top of my head I would think of the usual 4*s like XL, B and XQ, but also Fischl and more niche characters like maybe Beido who still have their uses.
There are other characters that retroactively get pulled back into relevancy by new characters like Noelle and Jean because of Furina and dendro made previously useless characters like Keqing usable as well.
I feel like the powercreep in star rail so far has been worse, but I can see characters like Topaz and Kafka staying relevant and becoming more useful over time whenever new FuA or DoT characters get added.

1.0 star rail chars are already all mostly powercreeped out of the game and odds are all of them will be by 3.x
