There was some decent early progress going on in that thread. I think people got overwhelmed with too many ideas though. Better to keep it focused to getting that image in the game first as a bonus for reaching that weird doorway.

Dark Maria was also implemented in the PSP version of SOTN.
Zero surprise when Ultimate used its version of VK as the basis for its own remix, they pulled a bunch of its music for additional songs as well, Judgement's OST is fricking ridiculous
Nah, it came out at the end of IGA's sway over the direction of the franchise and while the Wii still had some steam left, an odd little fighter with motion controls and a popular contemporary manga artist doing the designs isn't surprising at all

I know this is pedantic, but the whole sister thing was a mistranslation thing in the SNES manual, they're not actually related. She just calls her "onee-chan" the same she calls Richter "onii-chan".
Are you sure it's just a translation thing? The SNES game really does make them seem like sisters in the intro and endings. It's possible they just elaborated on the relationship for Dracula X?
It seems it is the case that Dracula X on SNES reworked them as sisters while on PC Engine they're not blood related. To the point the cutscenes Maria didn't knew Richter and the first thing she asks upon opening her eyes is "Who are you?" while on Dracula X/XX on SNES, she recognizes Richter as a long-time acquintance.

That's exactly right. The Saturn porters were also privvy to this spritesheet (which they dubbed "Black Maria") and may have referenced it when making their version of Maria, though Maria was supposedly always intended to be fought over the holy glasses too. I think another reason a bad-end-exclusive-boss was cut is because then it couldn't be implemented in the bestiary.
For fun, if you work out your damage to Richter and the orb you can last-hit both at once, killing him onscreen but triggering the cutscene to continue. Also, if you kill the orb while wearing the Axe Armor, Alucard will wear it for the entire scene/conversation and miss the dramatic jump into the teleporter, handing control back to you. You can then walk back and hang with Maria and Richter but nothing else happens.
What happens if you do both? Will Richter be frozen in a death animation? Have to try this now.

I imagine you just get both outcomes. Richter does the death animation, but once the inverted castle cutscene is over he's back to normal. The other silly thing is that Axe armor Alucard never stops his little HUT HUT HUT idle chant the entire time everything else is going on

I will add I probably never tried both at once because the Axe armor has pathetic range and mobility while you have to be able to hit both the orb and Richter at the same time as both are going crazy all over the place. It'd be a pain in the ass
i was just trying to figure out how to replace the sprites. there isn't much in the way of debug tools for pce so i was gonna try and walk through a loading sequence and see how it's reading the rom and what it does from there. my understanding of huc6280 assembly is severly lacking so it feels like i'm hitting my head against a wall: no results and i'm left with a headache. but i did manage to find some ram locations that seem to correspond with animations so i was going to look into where those values are used in code and so on when my pc died.
