They were just a secret boss, BiS felt like the end of the series anyways. The entire thing was about Fawful's rise and fall as a villain.
>turn off the freezer >the first three Shroobs thaw >notice an entire army in the background, including Elder Princess Shroob >DURRR WHEN WAS THIS IMPLIED?!?!
Fricking midwits.
Sometimes a callback is just a callback and not building towards anything major
If every cameo held importance Superstar Saga wouldn’t have been Geno’s last game
I find it weird how the intro shows Cackletta has some huge flying base but it's never brought up again. I thought it was going to be one of the final areas of the game like how Bowser's flying castle was in Paper Mario.
The Torkdrift boss in Odyssey is an implied alien IIRC, not to mention all the enemies and bosses in Galaxy that originate beyond the Mushroom Kingdom like Octoombas
Partners in Time >Shroobs were the Antagonist >Fawful made a cameo appearance
>Bowser's Inside Story >Fawful was the antagonist >Shroobs made a cameo appearance
Following that pattern it would be easy to conclude the Shroobs would be an antagonist in the next game
Fawful actually had a pretty interesting character arc for a Mario game. >Is Cackletta’s loyal sidekick in SS, even bringing her back from near death in the form of Bowletta >Begins to lose it even more after her permanent defeat, obsessing over Mario and Luigi in the sewers of Toad Town >Comes back in BiS to take revenge and fulfill Cackletta’s plans in the form of an actual Mushroom Kingdom takeover, with the whole world being at stake >The theme of the final area, Fawful’s Castle, plays part of Cackletta’s theme on a somber harpsichord >Game ends with Fawful unsuccessfully enacting his revenge by blowing himself up
I'm just saying it's not too far fetched to have expected Shroobs to make a return.
In this case it’s a reach since Fawful was just a minor antagonist that became the primary antagonist over time whereas the Shroobs were already primary antagonists that had their time in the spotlight and became a fun optional cameo
Even if there was something planned for the Shroobs for the 4th game I doubt Nintendo at the time would have allowed them to do anything with them since they were really pushing brand homogeny, hence why Dream Team is more NSMB than the other titles
Dream Team isn’t NSMBy at all
If anything, BIS is the most sterile since you’re stuck in the blandest overworld if the four

Also to add to this, they weren’t restricted since they had a larger cast of new characters than the last game, and even in the BIS remake, were allowed to create new characters
They just weren’t ever going to use the shroobs again, which is fine, since none of them had as much personality or potential as other antagonists.
Having them return as a main threat wouldn’t be as compelling because of this.
Fawful actually had a pretty interesting character arc for a Mario game. >Is Cackletta’s loyal sidekick in SS, even bringing her back from near death in the form of Bowletta >Begins to lose it even more after her permanent defeat, obsessing over Mario and Luigi in the sewers of Toad Town >Comes back in BiS to take revenge and fulfill Cackletta’s plans in the form of an actual Mushroom Kingdom takeover, with the whole world being at stake >The theme of the final area, Fawful’s Castle, plays part of Cackletta’s theme on a somber harpsichord >Game ends with Fawful unsuccessfully enacting his revenge by blowing himself up
I think it's interesting how quickly and easily Fawful is Usurped both by Bowser and the very thing he was trying to obtain. It's a werid case of that kind of story where it doesn;t feel cliche because up to the point that Bowser punches him so hard he dies Fawful was in complete control. Yet by the end he's just a part of Dark Bowser's assimilation plot (Yet enough of a nuisance at least he makes up half of the final battle).
For me it's that it had more interaction between the brothers. Like how your special moves are Mario and Luigi giving each other assists so they can use their regular attacks better. Compare the sequels where they use items instead.
Genuinely near perfect game, I just don't like the portion of the game where collect the Bean Star pieces. Enemy attacks also feel a bit too simple once you played the sequels.
Fast paced, doesn't take itself too serious, and it has a cartoony feel to it that no other game in the series has quite like it.
It’s only here
Outside it’s bowsers inside story which gets sucked off even though it’s not actually good
Every other game does the things it does better
I like all the games except for bowsers inside story
I’m glad dream team focused solely on the bros again instead of shoehorning bowser in as a character when he’s not even that fun to play as
I mean yeah it's better if it doesn't get its core gameplay completely changed but I am still a bit bummed that we probably won't get anymore games that focus on the bros being bros like these did, also with Paper Jam they finally figured out that all enemies should hit hard so it's a shame there's never going to be anymore games from em.
Dream teams hard mode was good fun since you could die really easily
Went back through it in March and it’s the most fun I had playing the game and it’s probably my second favourite now
Upsets me that they never brought that back when the bowsers inside story remake could’ve used it, since that game is piss easy still
If they somehow manage to get the devs back to make new ones, I’ll be happy. Not holding my breath for that though.
It’d be nice if there were indie games inspired by them, but it seems everyone wants to do paper Mario.
>Dream teams hard mode
I liked it for the most part but it turned the last two giant battles into complete chores. I'm never going to live down the fricking gyro segments.
The only one that gets me is bowser, normally because I sperg out and panic with the fire balls. Managed to do it on the first attempt, but that’s normally because I go back to the battle ring to refight the bosses for fun.
I wish the superstar saga remake at least had that, and I was surprised when it just wasn’t there at all.
Right the hard mode, unfortunate that yiu had to beat the game first but yeah it was fun. >It’d be nice if there were indie games inspired by them, but it seems everyone wants to do paper Mario.
Maybe someday anon, I imagine it's much harder to make an M&L than a Paper Mario type game though.
I suppose it’d be harder.
Battles in M&L are more involved and attacks only got more complex, with certain enemies having entirely unique methods to properly counterattack them, so it’d be really hard to match that.
if an indie game tried to ape superstar saga what would it have to do differently so that it doesnt just feel like a lukewarm version without mario characters, for example people like the bros attacks better than using items but copying the bros attacks as they are 1:1 into an indie game wouldnt be all that compelling without adding to or changing certain aspects of it, i dont mean to say add a bunch of gimmicky bloat to attacking which slows down fights to a crawl or weakens the impact both visually and technically with damage like yiik does either but i think in order to have a "spiritual successor" its gotta have something transformative about but i dont know what, i mean yes someone could just make a 1:1 copy and people will play it for the sake of more of the same, but i think it would be wiser to examine the stagnation of the mario and luigi and how it got there to avoid falling in the same pitfalls
Mario and Luigi are brothers for life, there's not that much buildup to thier characters' synergy. If you made two characters siblings/family or have them in the same occupation, maybe they are both performers like circus acrobats or gymnastic performance artists, you'd be set. Hell, you could even make one a person and the other a robot to justify physically abusing the "Luigi"
A circus themed Mario and Luigi indie game would be really kino.

Not bad. Potential for a goofy and funny story. Nice cohesive lot you don't have to think too hard about, you can just enjoy the game and run with the concept
Indie games will never hit the mark, since they’d try to copy the first game in the series. Even if they tried to copy the rest, they still would.
This is a series with 5 games which feature many improvements.
Indie devs would probably try to copy old bros attacks but would end up being worse than everything, as the old bros attacks are largely carried by the presentation as they’re otherwise a series of simple qte’s with not much variencebcompared to the later games which are more mechanically in depth with more loving parts, despite lacking the acrobatic presentation.
Another reason is that you’d have to have a duo that’s compelling as the bros and their relationship.
Being fair to paper mario, that only happened because the games were too similar, and with them both appearing on the 3ds because the wii u did poorly it became more important to differentiate the two series even at the expense that came to game quality.
You guys will never understand the fricking joys of having a Gameboy advance player attachement to your gamecube and playing this game with it on release date.
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions on the Nintendo 3DS.
>tease the future return of the Shroobs in BiS
>do nothing with it
Nice.
What even implied that they would return? Those three were just an easter egg at best.
I would never know because I never got past the fricking swiggler
>turn off the freezer
>the first three Shroobs thaw
>notice an entire army in the background, including Elder Princess Shroob
>DURRR WHEN WAS THIS IMPLIED?!?!
Fricking midwits.
It's an easter egg/cameo, autist.
The shit marvel movies did to people is so fricking sad.
there were shroobs just casually outside plack beach in at least one bowser jr.'s journey battle
They were just a secret boss, BiS felt like the end of the series anyways. The entire thing was about Fawful's rise and fall as a villain.

I miss them.

That huge face thing? Never got what that was supposed to be.
FIRE
THUNDERRRR
taking M&L RPG series requests
If lewd jellyfish sisters
If SFW the fawful crocs from BiS
Mario and Luigi fighting Fury Bowser
Pic related but with mario and baby mario
Are Shroobs and Tatanga the only alien threats Mario has faced?
The Torkdrift boss in Odyssey is an implied alien IIRC, not to mention all the enemies and bosses in Galaxy that originate beyond the Mushroom Kingdom like Octoombas
I forgot about Torkdrift. Also I forgot to consider the Galaxy Games since Bowser was still the primary antagonist.
does this mean you all wouldn't mind seeing tatanga and the shroobs again in a new mario game
I personally would love to see more intergalactic threats in Mario games
yay
To this day this is the best sprite Mario has ever had.
Best of implementation of QTEs, shame they removed the Bros. Attacks
Is it any good, or should I just play Super Star Saga again?
By god, do I love that wonderful game.
The only (good) Mario & Luigi game.
what makes superstar saga so well loved in comparison to pit and bis
If she didn't have a huge gaping beanbeaner mouth she'd actuslly be cute
I thought Bowser's Inside Story was generally very well recieved
To be fair to that anon, Fawful did make a brief cameo in Partners in Time before becoming a major antagonist in the next game
Fawful was throughout the entire series you fricking doughnut.
>Missing the point entirely
Superstar Saga
>Fawful was an antagonist
Partners in Time
>Shroobs were the Antagonist
>Fawful made a cameo appearance
>Bowser's Inside Story
>Fawful was the antagonist
>Shroobs made a cameo appearance
Following that pattern it would be easy to conclude the Shroobs would be an antagonist in the next game
I thought that was a great character arc.
Superstar saga was the first game.
>It's a pattern
You have one example.
I'm just saying it's not too far fetched to have expected Shroobs to make a return.
It is entirely too far fetched.
Oh, Fawful is back and now the Shroobs made a surprising cameo. I wonder if they'll return in the next game. How is that far fetched?
It is the third game in the series and Fawful is from the first fricking game.
Geno was in the first game too. What's your point?
My point is you're mentally damaged by modern media creation tropes.
You know Bowser's Inside Story came out way before cape shit took off right
IRONMAN CAME OUT IN TWO THOUSAND EIGHT YOU FRICKING moron
Capeshit didn't become really popular and mainstream until the Avengers
In this case it’s a reach since Fawful was just a minor antagonist that became the primary antagonist over time whereas the Shroobs were already primary antagonists that had their time in the spotlight and became a fun optional cameo
Even if there was something planned for the Shroobs for the 4th game I doubt Nintendo at the time would have allowed them to do anything with them since they were really pushing brand homogeny, hence why Dream Team is more NSMB than the other titles

>The theme of the final area, Fawful’s Castle, plays part of Cackletta’s theme on a somber harpsichord
>Game ends with Fawful unsuccessfully enacting his revenge by blowing himself up
Fawful planned to betray Cackletta
Makes sense, since he never once seemed upset that she bit it
I think it's interesting how quickly and easily Fawful is Usurped both by Bowser and the very thing he was trying to obtain.
It's been forever since I played. What was the deal with Dark Bowser again?
Pretty sure it's just a form the Dark Star took. I forget what circumstances led to it though.
It was eating Bowser's dna as it traveled around inside his body.
For me it's that it had more interaction between the brothers. Like how your special moves are Mario and Luigi giving each other assists so they can use their regular attacks better. Compare the sequels where they use items instead.

It has an actual overworld you can explore between plot segments instead of stringing you through them like the other games
I like all the games except for bowsers inside story
I’m glad dream team focused solely on the bros again instead of shoehorning bowser in as a character when he’s not even that fun to play as
Based and bro pilled
Frick bowsers vore story
Shit bosses, piss easy, shit overworld, and bowsers attacks fricking blow
I’m the only person who has good opinions on this series
Everyone else is a bumbling moron and their posts are often gibberish, so I ignore them
There are no bad games in this series, and I’d rather it stay dead than be like paper Mario which gets more games with a fundamentally flawed formula
