Galaxy and 3D world have thwomps like left. Dropping on a schedule allows rows to be synchronized or activated in sequence, or evens the playing field in the case of multiplayer in 3DW. Being solid means they can be wall jumped off of and stood on top of, generally becoming deadly platforms more than enemies.
Spiked thwomps like right appear in NSMB and share their "drop when Mario is near" behavior from other 2D games. These are not solid because damage boosting makes more sense in 2D.
The outlier here is Mario Maker 2 3DW-style thwomps that are solid and activate only when Mario is near.
thwomps are scary. imagine it in real life, a giant floating extremely heavy block of stone with a pissed off face that grinds shit under it into a paste...honestly nightmarefuel...but maybe they can be considered high octane nightmare fuel like boos and dry bones? O.O
