2's combat was complete garbage though. Its the worst aspects of 1 and 3's combat stapled together to form one of the most boring color matching slogs I've ever seen. Doesn't help that outside of its 4 good squad members, the story is power ranger tier garbage.
But it does. You have to snap to cover 80% of the time. ME1 was comfortable to be freeform with, I don't know where the meme comes from that it was terrible, your squad had a larger range of movement as well.
Why don't we just compare squadmates?
A fricking Krogan has over twice as many powers as a biotic master. Do you like spamming the same two combos 100 times?
I feel like Mass Effect 2 has the best side quests in the series, but the main story is such a letdown. Human reaper? Collectors? Shepards death? Cerberus and Illusive Man retcon? Harbinger? What the frick were Bioware smoking back then?
>top: 0 choices per skill >bottom: 1 choice per skill
Seems like an improvement to me. Mass Effect was never some deep RPG you pretend it to be, it was a shooter with abilities, the shooter part was just dogshit
ME1 was a game that needed work, ME2 needed more ME1 but Bioware realised they could just cut half the RPG shit out and still make a good story that would carry the game anyways. the best Mass Effect game is a theoretical ME1.75 that will never EVER happen
Incredibly based and accurate.
A lot of ME1 gameplay were half-cooked, sure, but they weren't bad, they just needed more work.
But instead of putting in the work Bioware just decided to abandon most of the ideas all together.
Enemies that are more vulnerable to certain effects? Shield penetration? 15 different armour textures and 5 different armours? Infinite Ammo with in-game explanations?
Scrap all that shit!
>I really wish they didn't cut the Mako.
Same. I absolutely hated the empty planets in 1 (no, finding an Asari writing collectible does not count as content), but the Mako definitely wasn't the problem. Missions with it were great fun
I really wish they didn't cut the Mako. It was a good way to make planets feel big, they just had to fix the controls.
This thread makes me miss Shamus Young. His non-binary kid just writes depressing shit I don't care for.
I loved how the planets looked and felt, I didn't mind the sense of emptiness - but they needed to get more inventive with potential dangers than occasionally saying "this planet is pretty hot/cold", and vary up the designs for the buildings you find. Why should a Turian pirate compound in the Traverse look *exactly* like a Systems Alliance mining facility?
1 has the kino soundtrack, atmosphere, and story.
1 has the characters, still a fantastic soundtrack and atmosphere, a solid story, introduces great characters, streamlines the gameplay / mechanics.
By the way, all of those upgrades for weapons in ME1 are just moved into a different system in 2 where you upgrade them separately on the ship.
3 has the best gameplay, and improves upon ME2 but the story and game itself drags on and becomes garbage by act III (once you go to Thessia). Also Kai Leng is just a c**t, and while I don't even hate the ending that much, it's the ending sequence leading up to the ending that sucks fricking ass. The entire Earth sequence is a drag that you just want to get over with and finish. The actual ending cinematics are good though, especially Destroy. Also, the ME3 multiplayer was fun as frick when it came out, I played so much of it and it was a nice surprise.
I love 1 so much, but every time I replay it I like it less. There's so much laziness in 1, so much asset re-use. At least it's covered up better in ME2 despite still existing there, at least there's not 20+ empty bases that all look the same to explore on random planets. I mean ME1 has soul, but it is so dated in other ways and the characters have such less development than the sequels. Think about how much dialogue Mordin has in ME2 for example, he has like more dialogue than almost all your squadmates combined in ME1.
In short, ME2 is the best game because it has the best overall experience despite its flaws. The characters are all excellent and the loyalty missions and whatnot are all a lot of fun. Also, I love playing soldier in ME2 and just plowing through the game on insanity with inferno ammo and adrenaline rush, it's just fun.
>3 has best gameplay
that's true and especially apparent in the multiplayer where you could play other races with a lot of variety between the powers. The only thing that was shit in the gameplay was the sync kills(enemies trapping you into an animation and instantly killing you, great for trailers and incredibly shit in practice) which made melee too risky and forced you to engage enemies that could sync kill on stairs because they can't initiate it if they were slightly above or below you
I never played the MP but I remember if you want to kill a banshee as a Vanguard in the campaign, you always have to roll backwards after charging her just to make sure she doesn't instakill you
What a fun mechanic
in MP it was even worse because on the highest difficulty you could have various factions on the same map so you could be in an orgy of Brutes, Banshees and cerberus phantoms all trying to instakill you. Only Geth enemies couldn't sync kill you so it was fun against them
It will only happen in certain states. IIRC when they're teleporting you can be grabbed but you're safe when they're throwing orbs (though they also block powers then, banshees are bullshit).
Also you can't be grabbed if you're at different heights (ie on a ramp) but they can still damage you with melee attacks which can still make it a little dicey, especially with banshees.
Ive played all of them and yeah, i really miss the way they explored more with mechanics in the first game but i love all three. Im playing through all of them again and i cant wait to be blue balled at the end of all of this.
Also unrelated but, does anyone have The Witcher cover book that has Geralt appearing in it and looking a lot like Male Shepard?
>NOOOOOOOO THERE AREN'T ENOUGH SLIDERS >I NEED MORE STATS AND SLIDERS >THIS IS PEAK GAMEPLAY, GIVE ME MORE NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES TO OBSESS OVER
we can't all be literal autists, OP. Some of us come to RPGs for the storytelling, immersion, characters and worldbuilding, not just doing maths to break your character.
>actual literal moron's smooth brain roasts at the thought of having to comprehend more than 5 talents >to him, this is the realm of 'super autists'
LOL
>just doing maths to break your character
The problem with ME1 is that it doesn't have any depth for that, the leveling is completely braindead. You just points into your main skills and become a god halfway into the game
You can tell that ME was console babby's first kinda actual RPG because it got so popular and it's still being discussed today (meaning the people who played it most back then were around 15-20 years old). ME1 and 2 were mediocre, 3 was bad. That's it.
>ME1 >Can spam all the skills >ME2 & ME3 >Skills share the same fricking cooldown timer
Along with the lack of customization and the lack of skill usage is the reason why ME2 & ME3 are considered shit, but lets be real here, ME1 combat was pure ass but had better customization and the ability to use skills on steroids. ME2 still sucks for having timed forced missions you couldn't skip, hope you have the upgrades and weapons you wanted because you're going to attack the Collector ship, nope no turning back or doing another side mission to level up, you're going to go do an unskippable boss battle now.
Actually, if you spec heavily into cooldown reduction, you can fire off Biotic abilities in 3 much faster than you can with the individual cooldowns in 1
I like both system
It was the best. For a long time I tried to convince myself that first one was the best, but most fun was in ME2, travelling around, meeting new squaddies and exploring interesting places like Omega,Illium etc.
>they worked on TPS
To the detriment of literally everything else, including completely axing planetside exploration. The combat wasn't even that good, universal cooldowns was such a shit systems.
ME2 was my least favorite of all the games. ME1 felt more like a real RPG, and ME3 was a much more polished action-RPG.
>planetside exploration
frick off. mako sections are nothing but wallpaper bait. if you praise that crap but shit on starfield, then you're a hypocrite.
It's funny because Mass Effect Andromeda is basically the expanded version of ME1 they are asking for even with better mako sections and exploration but they don't actually like that one because no one actually wants to do that shit.
I wasn't bothered that much by bugs because bugs are fixable, I was more bothered by the story and characters, also the squad and enemy AI was clearly worse than in 3.
I couldn't set up my squad to do cool combos like in that game which was lame.
At least the Jet pack was cool.

>I couldn't set up my squad to do cool combos like in that game which was lame.
Yeah, absolutely no clue why they removed that. People always says that ME:A at least has fun combat but that just made me conclude that they're playing ME massively differently from what I do. Probably rolled a soldier and just shot everyone
My ideal ME3 gameplay is >use energy drain or squadmate uses overload >Liara uses warp >I use throw to explode it >spam pull + throw on the rest of the mooks
It was because Mass effect 2 has biotic charge. And if you arent playing vanguard you are playing the game wrong. In fact that ability warps the game so much that its pretty much a completly diffrent type of game without it.
I somtimes literally jizz my pants when I randomly think about how fricking good it feels to biotic charge into geth shotgun into another charge. Its actually fricking erotic.
I actually like the 3rd game the best, it has the most fun combat for power users (Bionic/Engineer) like me, plus many of the best story and character moments are from that game.
But half the top one is useless boring shit like does 1.1% damage with a sniper rifle or whatever, the second is better because it only bothers with the fun level ups.
When it came out, I was excited to use different weapon classes like the assault rifle and sniper. My first run was full biotic, so I was stuck with the pistol. But other than that, yeah — the gear slog was not a desirable feature.
- do as many loyalty missions as you can
- launch the mission immediately after crew abduction. therefore, avoid getting the reaper IFF for as long as possible.
- don't be moronic.
I did both the Geth and Tali loyalty missions after the iff and saved everyone did Tali last just so I could bring the Geth guy, made the mission funny.
The one thing I could never get over is them changing the ammunition types from ME1 into abilities in 2. It feels like they just couldn't be arsed to make the inventory menus more user friendly, so instead scrapped them entirely. In fact, that's what they did with every interesting feature that didn't *quite* work but showed potential in 1 - planetary exploration, overheat-based combat pacing, weird floating grenades. I don't get it.
Yes it was, ME1troony
Yes.
Correct, I'll replay ME2 because the action gameplay doesn't feel like total garbage
If that's all you care about, you'd be better off with ME3.
2's combat was complete garbage though. Its the worst aspects of 1 and 3's combat stapled together to form one of the most boring color matching slogs I've ever seen. Doesn't help that outside of its 4 good squad members, the story is power ranger tier garbage.

It legit has the worst combat in the entire series.
Yes

You got the Indians riled up with this one
>thermal clips, sir!
If you're going to compare stat tables the least you can do is use Shep's table instead of a squamate's.
if he did that, everyone would know hes full of shit
Why don't we just compare squadmates?
A fricking Krogan has over twice as many powers as a biotic master. Do you like spamming the same two combos 100 times?
ME1 skill points are just passive stat increases with active skill unlocks in them. ME2 is just active skills.
me 2 levelups are just stat increases for those
you still have twice as many active abilities in the first game

also sometimes me3 is on sale for a buck or 2 so if you have 3 friends that you can rope into buying it for a full squad the MP is fantastic
It will only happen in certain states. IIRC when they're teleporting you can be grabbed but you're safe when they're throwing orbs (though they also block powers then, banshees are bullshit).

I have played way too much ME3 multiplayer.
That is because you are using the wrong shotgun.
ME3 multiplayer was the best. Geth Juggernaut, my love…
ME1 was Bioware's last game before EA took over. So if you think ME2 was better you're basically a dumb butthole
>skill bloat "Do X% more damage with [Weapon Type] good

Good game.
Most of the skills in ME1 are fricking useless though.
the weapons as well mainly because you can't run out of ammo. i rarely used anything besides an assault rifle. ME2 remedied that

why did my whole squad die in the last mission
Because you didn't do their loyalty missions and made terrible decisions in the suicide mission
- do as many loyalty missions as you can
- launch the mission immediately after crew abduction. therefore, avoid getting the reaper IFF for as long as possible.
- don't be moronic.

I did both the Geth and Tali loyalty missions after the iff and saved everyone did Tali last just so I could bring the Geth guy, made the mission funny.
the logic for when crew abduction happens is kinda moronic and unclear. that easter egg is funny but it's also good to play it safe.
Pretty sure you do up to 2 missions possibly those 2 specifically.

they're basically the same, just me1 gives you the stat bonuses more incrementally
