There was work done on an SC spinoff of a TPS with Tychus as the lead. As far as I know it was being done as a Gears of War style game with a squad.
The big gimmick was that Tychus was recovered and revived with technology developed from Zerg cells, as you progressed through the game you would either upgrade yourself with Zerg biological upgrades or cybernetics, culminating in becoming either a Zerg-Terran hybrid or essentially the Terminator. You had a far harder game if you didn't take any upgrades but a different ending.

TBC was really the start of the end for WoW, at least from a story/lore perspective. Elves going to horde was dumb, Draenai being uncorrupted Eredar and falling to Azeroth on a spaceship was beyond moronic, but the biggest sin which everything else in WoW is a direct continuation of is the existence of the Naruu.
These creatures have an in-lore power level far beyond anything else Azeroth as a whole has dealt with, with other entities like Sageras, the old gods, the burning legion, etc. existing but having a lore reason why they aren't fully manifesting or able to directly intervene in the story, so we pretty much deal with their tendrils into the world, either not fully manifested versions of themselves or their subordinates or something similar. When Naruu were included and directly interacting with the world, everything was thrown out of whack and the players had to start their own climb to demigod like power to be able to interact with them on an even level.
Every lore introduction since then has been step after step of bigger, more cosmic threats that never end and get more absurd every step of the way. Blizzard is never content to just let the players and Azeroth continue to be something other than what the entire lore revolves around, everything's got to be about these heroes climbing up and punching the face of god until there's nothing left, except the expansions must continue so now there's got to be another supervillain introduced to supplant the previous one in a neverending chain but now with a +1 version.
That being said though, I think WoW's gameplay was at its peak after the release of BT/MH's raid, it really felt like all the classes had their own identity and you still weren't 100% constrained in your choices of how to build them.
They killed the mystique of their own lore. It used to be that the old gods and titans were these beings that were so far out the player power level and understanding that there was a good mystery to the world.
Then they fricked it up. Tried to overexplain everything. Then everything had to be the real mastermind behind everything else.
The real curse is having to continue writing a product that should have ended a long, long time ago. They did it poorly even still.
That's exactly right, everything about the story is cheapened now because it all just serves as a vehicle to push the gameplay forward. It's an afterthought and lacks any standing on its own.
Vanilla WoW had a good thing going for it because while there were major story beats in the raids and some of the quest lines, a lot of what was going on was self-contained and small scale so you could go immerse yourself in it and get a partial conclusion to it at your own pace. It's like getting to Westfall would give you the minor troubles of the farm town in the area and would lead up to the introduction of the Defias bandits, how they started as masons who got cheated out of their pay by the nobles in Stormwind, and then you'd eventually raid their hideout and take out their leader. The story started at level 10, it hit its stride at level 15, and then it peaked and ended at level 18, all along the way you got interesting background information on what was going on in the area.
Duskwood was another example, you got to investigate the problems plaguing Darkshire and the surrounding area and eventually put down the slumbering undead scourge to restore some semblance of balance. Or Desolace containing the lore on a rogue Night Elf dabbling in the arcane and the centaur clans worshiping their queen/goddess. Or the entire line regarding the Scarlet Crusade in their Monastery in the plaguelands, which finished its entire chapter between levels 32 to 40. You got your lore in bite sized chunks with local stakes and things you could conceivably handle as a small band of adventurers that happened to be in the right place at the right time.

I watched the entire video. At no point Asmongold mentions there being any sort of accident related to his mother's oxygen tank and her smoking. EMTs were called because she couldn't move from lack of oxygen, due to her to being able to use the machine because she bailed ASAP from the hospital before they could teach her. There's also nothing in the video indicating something was happening in the background as he was talking.

The vast majority of people skip quest flavor text and don't give a shit about WoW's plot they find it fun to play. This is completely independent from metagaming as a topic.
Because that is always where people draw the line. "Nobody plays WoW for the story" easily becomes "Nobody plays WoW for the gameplay" and so on until you're left with nothing that makes a good game mattering because actually it's all about competitive endgame raiding and "WoW wasn't successful because of it's shit [thing that all other games have]". Warcraft lore WAS a massive point of appeal when it was still there at all, people bought it as 3rd person Warcraft game and wanted to know what's gonna happen to the characters they like, of course the story and the lore mattered.

The game's plot with the Primalists isn't the worst blizzard has churned out, the Incarnates have character and their motivations and presence in already established dragon lore gives it a bit of depth that it was lacking. That is to say, the Titans reshaped the proto dragons into modern dragons, but consent was never a question. Now it's established there wasn't consent and the Ice primalist had her children mutated into another species against her wishes.
The other plot line if focused on trying to keep Norz from becoming Murozond and trying to explain why the infinites exist, which is something blizzard was avoiding for a while.
Dragonflight is some fruity shit, but I don't think it's the lowest blizzard has gotten in terms of story and lore. I don't think anything can top trashing the WoW Chronicles book to inflate the Death Pantheon into being above everything, followed by Elune massacring her own people and but fricking up.

WC is full of this shit, old NE lore is 90% Knaak fanfiction, hell all the dragon lore is pretty much Knaak fan fiction which is why only after years of garnishing it has it started to flow better with WC lore.
In fact maybe that's half the reason you're noticing the tonal shift, the WC dragon lore mostly exists in a bubble that doesn't work well with the rest of universe (I.E Dragons all suck ass at doing their jobs because few writers call upon them to serve their roles).
Nobody is arguing the old lore is good, but it had dramatic flair, it followed 'rule of cool' well, it was at least moderately competently written. It had lots of memorable characters that are still used today because they can't seem to invent any new ones. The modern dialog is so cringeworthy I can barely get through a single cinematic. The incarnates will be used for one more patch before they condemned to the dustbin of past expansions. They have no longevity, nobody will care about them by the end of 2024. They're one note, single use, amateurishly conceived placeholder villains until the next expansion comes out and they are forgotten.
That would depend on how Blizzard actually utilizes them. If Iridikron actually bring Yogg back or does some shit that involves the Void Lords they would have cemented themselves enough
There is also the whole plot point surrounding their cause that is more or less sustained by Vyranoth. Blizzard could easily drop the ball with that and have her just save Alexstrasza and admit she was wrong and go good, but they could just as easily play up the conflict a bit more.

Alexstrasa and Deathwing were characters since WC II, but I believe every other aspect and their detailed lore we written by Knaak who ripped the Dragon Flight concept from DND and made them into magical guardians who served the Titans.

World of Sylvanascraft felt like something driven by investors. Danuser did waifuize Sylvanas, but a lot of her behavior was structured around will they won't they baiting based on the playerbases hatred over her.
Sylvanas was shady, shifty and kind of a c**t since vanilla, the story shift towards her stemmed from seething over Forsaken victories in cata.
Blizzard ignored the forsaken evil until after WoD and I feel like player interest in Sylvanas was the cause of the shift towards her becoming a primary character.
I was in the lore forums during cata, people wanted her head on a pike and a lot of cringe shit people demanded ended up happening (I.E the entire fricking desolate counsel). People even considered Garrosh being bad was just a blizzard protecting Sylvanas and trying to throw the alliance a bone for all their b***hing in cata.
The war story was always a bad idea, players got too passionate about their faction and wanted them to win objectively. Alliance players even argued horde, being the "bad" faction should have been ok with losing. This is a whole other rabbit hole this thread will die before we go down, but it's the basis of "the horde will be good in the end" writing.
Sylvanus was very popular. Not only a shit load of WoW players are fat addicts who fap on her for some reason and will waifu her (even here), but you have also the grrl power factor.

Is that why they're still using characters from WC3/vanilla/tbc/wotlk era all throughout the story and nothing from the modern era has stuck like they have? Because they were such badly written characters?

Story was always taking a back seat during those days. If you wanted to get into it you could, if you didn't nobody cared. Now it's all long cinematics, constant gameplay interruptions to listen to dialogues and major story events and characterization happens in IRL official fanfiction books.
