When you're playing the more combo focused Runick variants it actually matters a fair bit. Not being able to remove stuff by battle makes it far easier for the opponent to mount a comeback on turn 3.
People who say the battle phase doesn't ever matter are just wrong.
I was referring to deck popularity, not power level. Tri-Brigade and Eldlich were everywhere on release because they were easy to build, and more importantly, easy to play.

It was a factor, sure, but almost all heavily promoted online games (out of the ones that don't die) have a huge burst of players to start then settle into a stable population later that's typically less than 30% of the launch playerbase. The only exceptions are titans like CSGO.
D-Link was many things, but cheap definitely wasn't one of them. A lot of people spent money gems to build D-Link that month after Dis Pater released. It's actually kind of bizarre how Konami would kill off such an expensive deck so quickly. The Konami we know is far too greedy to kill off a deck like this immediately after getting support.
My guess is that Komami expected us to use the Dragonrulers as a substitute for the chaos engine considering they unlimited all of them. Now we're stuck with a powercrept engine that's only good for Galaxy Tomahawk turbo, a dead deck that many of us spent hundreds if not over a thousand UR to build and upgrade, and potentially multiple other decks that were killed off after the Chaos Ruler ban. All for what was probably sheer incompetence on Konami's part.
Adventure prank kids was overrated. Adventure tanyi was the strongest deck by far because it was just just halq turbo with adventure and dpe it was the pinnacle of slop

Nemmy can run D-Shifter which assfricks Snake-Eye most of the time, I guess if you count that it's fine.

By the way if they ban linkuriboh and masquerena while leaving snek-eyes untouched (they absolutely will) they should free dimensional shifter as well, at least until they properly hit FIREslop.

40, i genuinely don't know what other 20 cards i could toss here.
Small world, droll, Belle, Ra Ball, and a triple tac package is all I really added to make 60. I'm also using summon limit. But it is really all stuff to attempt to slow down snake eyes. It's definitely an uphill battle though

Also, you want a Behemoth, the new UR Legacy Pack one. It's the only good non-Nemleria L10 Beast.

I mainly just use the Repeter to empty the ED faster because it lets you pick how many to use. Makes it less prone to having 1 left and no Oreiller to send it. I don't regret including it but eh, if you don't miss it then no reason to include it.
Calc is fine imo but I swapped it for a tribute summon target.

Pricing aside the only deck I like in MD that I will never bother with outside of collecting irl is Altergeist because people get fricking mad when it gets going, way more than getting sacked by Lab or Traptrix. It's that uniquely bully-flavored deck that is perfectly tailored to piss people off, that deck where it's extremely oppressive when it gets going but shitty enough going second that people know their deck is stronger if they had a chance to move. That deck that perfectly encapsulates that manga page describing control decks. It's maximum anti-fun irl, total zero-sum frick you only I get to play, even moreso than Stun.

It's not for any specific deck, each core booster typically includes about 10 or so miscellaneous cards that aren't explicitly tied to any specific strategy, but may sometimes go well with a recent archetype or non-booster product.
For example, cards like her, Hatsugai, Sari, and The Great Noodle Inversion are just flavor for the most part, and won't see play outside of gimmick decks. They're pack filler. Cards like Minairuka, Circular Sorceror, and Wannabee! on the other hand, are clearly supposed to support Ghoti, Traptrix SD/Plant-Insect soup, and generic traps, but largely fit in the same "here's a silly oneoff" card category.

The problem were having with these generic extra deck monsters is that they are outright stronger then most archetypal boss monsters/OTK monsters
Accesscode is one of the most egregious examples of this as its virtually a requirement in every deck. Accesscode single handedly increased the speed of the game by almost guaranteeing that the game can always end on turn 3. Accesscode is such a big deal that decks that can't run it are given a otk monster principle effectively leading to the death of otk decks as an identity.

Kash is way better into the roach and other handtraps, auto-win if you summon ariseheart, they have actual 1 card combo, and they have decent recursion with Birth and Theosis adding back a Kash.

Well that's the thing isn't it? I assure you I haven't seen Ariseheart since 2 seasons ago. A single ash/imperm is enough to stop them from summonning Mr. MacroCosmos. They always end, even when not being interrumped, in the 0 atk xyz that summons Fenrir from the deck. Always.
Anyways I'm not saying the deck is bad, but it doesn't seem that better than exos to me. Specially when they are both fricking weak to board breakers.

They can get to Ariseheart with 2 SS unless your opponent shotgun their Maxx C, which should be enough to win games by itself most of the times. Meanwhile if you open Martha, in 2 SS Exo only get Mikhailis set trap pass. >A single ash/imperm is enough to stop them from summonning Mr. MacroCosmos
And Exo is even worse if you handtrap them. Ashing Martha is really bad for you and you need a lot of extenders to get to Magnifica. Kash only needs 1 extender to play through Ash.

I do not find a problem with any of the cards in the archetype.
The issue is that you need to choose between being an unfair dick and play virus cards at the risk of bricking or play it safe and play a somewhat boring control game that has a hard time breaking boards.
The deck lasted significantly longer with Merrli but no Kitkat. Merrli is a much more severe hit, so keep her banned. Life in prison for that little siren criminal, make her get used to cleaning the cell toilet as her only exposure to the water she used to live in.
I'm a new player, when it comes to deck building what should I look for in an archetype? I tried magician girls and someone pointed out that damage step effects are the worst in the game so I have to start over.

He should definitely get a playable deck/strong deck but just metaslaving is a good train to turning the game into an unfun chore you'll want to quit sooner rather than later.

You either find a card you like and try making a deck around it or you copy a meta deck list. Magician Girls still work as a Quintet Blind 2nd if you bought the structure deck.
You should look to see if it has had any level of semi-competitive success at least. You don't want to be put gems into an archetype that has gotten zero new cards in 15 years and was terrible even back then.

It looks like my current list but he's slotted in some Bystials, ready fusion, and 2 extra Sakitama instead of Aratama, with a semi-different ED. I assume he knows more than me so I'll tweak mine to be closer, but I'm not crafting Ready Fusion for this right now.
It's UR though, and I'm making this because I have the cards as byproducts.
The only cards I'm missing compared to his list are 2 Sakitamas since I was cheap on Exos, 2 Spright Elf, The Bystial Lubellion, and his Ready Fusions.

Their gimmick is already good and they have a good toolbox in their backrow already, they just need consistency+extension. The deck is super bricky and needs you to draw a perfect hand of monster+spells, and even then it will always fold to one monster removal.
As boring is it is, something like an emergency teleport would do so much for the deck since it'd be both a monster to get you started/to extend with as well as a spell to trigger your normal summon.
This format was a great format to be a rogue deck player in until every slack jawed homosexual started playing Stun shit. I hate this playerbase so fricking much. And they always start with Solemn, every fricking game.

Playing Ancient Fairy Dragon, even when losing the coinflip, has made me realize just how little of a downside losing your battle phase really is.
When you're playing the more combo focused Runick variants it actually matters a fair bit. Not being able to remove stuff by battle makes it far easier for the opponent to mount a comeback on turn 3.
People who say the battle phase doesn't ever matter are just wrong.

It was a factor, sure, but almost all heavily promoted online games (out of the ones that don't die) have a huge burst of players to start then settle into a stable population later that's typically less than 30% of the launch playerbase. The only exceptions are titans like CSGO.

VS/dragon link and branded format was actually quite fun for 2 months before they decided to kill dlink and print SHS.
It was too diverse and DLink was too cheap which made troonami seethe
D-Link was many things, but cheap definitely wasn't one of them. A lot of people spent money gems to build D-Link that month after Dis Pater released. It's actually kind of bizarre how Konami would kill off such an expensive deck so quickly. The Konami we know is far too greedy to kill off a deck like this immediately after getting support.
My guess is that Komami expected us to use the Dragonrulers as a substitute for the chaos engine considering they unlimited all of them. Now we're stuck with a powercrept engine that's only good for Galaxy Tomahawk turbo, a dead deck that many of us spent hundreds if not over a thousand UR to build and upgrade, and potentially multiple other decks that were killed off after the Chaos Ruler ban. All for what was probably sheer incompetence on Konami's part.

Pricing aside the only deck I like in MD that I will never bother with outside of collecting irl is Altergeist because people get fricking mad when it gets going, way more than getting sacked by Lab or Traptrix. It's that uniquely bully-flavored deck that is perfectly tailored to piss people off, that deck where it's extremely oppressive when it gets going but shitty enough going second that people know their deck is stronger if they had a chance to move. That deck that perfectly encapsulates that manga page describing control decks. It's maximum anti-fun irl, total zero-sum frick you only I get to play, even moreso than Stun.
When this card gets banned, you'll know Volcanics will be in the very next selection pack.

It's not for any specific deck, each core booster typically includes about 10 or so miscellaneous cards that aren't explicitly tied to any specific strategy, but may sometimes go well with a recent archetype or non-booster product.
For example, cards like her, Hatsugai, Sari, and The Great Noodle Inversion are just flavor for the most part, and won't see play outside of gimmick decks. They're pack filler. Cards like Minairuka, Circular Sorceror, and Wannabee! on the other hand, are clearly supposed to support Ghoti, Traptrix SD/Plant-Insect soup, and generic traps, but largely fit in the same "here's a silly oneoff" card category.

The problem were having with these generic extra deck monsters is that they are outright stronger then most archetypal boss monsters/OTK monsters
Accesscode is one of the most egregious examples of this as its virtually a requirement in every deck. Accesscode single handedly increased the speed of the game by almost guaranteeing that the game can always end on turn 3. Accesscode is such a big deal that decks that can't run it are given a otk monster principle effectively leading to the death of otk decks as an identity.
I just realized why people don't play SHS as much I thought they would, the deck is so BAD going second.
Might as well play stunshit at this point since they don't lose to maxx c or droll.
Deck is half handtrap, it can choke most decks without major issues.

Kash is way better into the roach and other handtraps, auto-win if you summon ariseheart, they have actual 1 card combo, and they have decent recursion with Birth and Theosis adding back a Kash.

They can get to Ariseheart with 2 SS unless your opponent shotgun their Maxx C, which should be enough to win games by itself most of the times. Meanwhile if you open Martha, in 2 SS Exo only get Mikhailis set trap pass.

You should look to see if it has had any level of semi-competitive success at least. You don't want to be put gems into an archetype that has gotten zero new cards in 15 years and was terrible even back then.

It's a backrow deck, do you want more backrow that's potentially good or I dunno a monster that does something besides play into the backrow spam
Their gimmick is already good and they have a good toolbox in their backrow already, they just need consistency+extension. The deck is super bricky and needs you to draw a perfect hand of monster+spells, and even then it will always fold to one monster removal.
As boring is it is, something like an emergency teleport would do so much for the deck since it'd be both a monster to get you started/to extend with as well as a spell to trigger your normal summon.
If you count getting a searcher that's better just getting its archetypal card in hand as good, sure
