Basically the first few issues of the manga were not about the card game. Eventually the card game was introduced and the first anime episode was about Exodia (Yugi) versus Blue Eyes (Kaiba). One of the first cards ever shown was Summoned Skull. And the first spell card was Megamorph.
The original cards in the show were much more unbalanced than the card game. The series was about Yugi, some kid who is really smart so he goes to school with older kids. He finds an ancient Egyptian relic that lets him switch souls with a pharoah named Atem. He plays Dark Magician. The card game is made by a billionaire named Pegasus who plays the Toon monsters. He based the card game on ancient monsters in Egypt, that's why they're called monster cards.
The three "best" cards in the show are the Egyptian God cards, (they suck in the real game). The best canon card of all was the Winged Dragon of Ra. (Although in GX Obelisk is top because Kaiba owns the school).
The original Yu-Gi-Oh movie is about Yugi owning all 3 God cards so Kaiba asks Pegasus if there's any secret card that can stop them, and he says there is one but then a ghost gives Kaiba a second one.
The second one is a trap called Pyramid of Light, the in-movie effect is "destroy all God cards". But it's an evil card which spawns some evil ancient Egyptian guy and Kaiba and Yugi defeat him with the other card, the Canon best card in Season One which is blue eyes shining dragon. (It sucks in the real game) lol.

Starting the game you will get enough to make one deck with some staple cards. You're starting pretty late so you missed a lot of packs, but the meta always changes every 3-6 months.
If the cards aren't in the current selection packs or in the always around secret packs you can only craft them or get them by complete chance, not directly roll for them on a pack where your odds are infinitely higher (packs give you 4 random (can be any card in the game that isn't banned) and 4 cards from the pack, which is why the odds are higher)
It's a solid time sink. I've got around 30 decks, 5-10 more half-finished without spending anything. 3 of those are absurdly resource intensive (HERO, Dino, and Endymion) so people who make decent decisions will have way more.

I played through the story mode using the built in anime decks. It was fun. I was stuck on Seeker for the longest because he ran an exodia deck with triple pot of greed, triple gracful charity, and triple of every piece of Exodia.

Adamancipators have a higher ceiling but Dragon Links play much better through disruption and have options under Maxx C. Rocks are very much a glass cannon 'go first or scoop' type of deck, they don't actually play very similarly beyond being combo.

NTA, but I got to Mythic top 1000 every season over the last year, and very rarely did the game ever feel like it rewarded skillful play and strategy. I also built well over 30+ decks with different playstyles. Some meta, others gimmicky fun ones. My preferred playstyle also leaned toward Midrange/Control. There was a huge chunk of the time where losing felt entirely out of my control. Where, reflecting on the duel, there was no "I could have done that" type realization.
If you're talking about arena it also takes into account the cards in your deck and matches you with decks of a similar 'power level' (if you play the starter decks you will quickly notice this) so the better your deck the more swingy it will of course be (stronger decks can do more)
Magic has blowouts same way as yugioh does it just takes longer for you to notice in a game (or maybe not at all, you can know you've lost by turn 2) as opposed to simply your opponent dropping maxx C on you and you not having an answer to it
Oh yeah, MtG is just as bad as Yu-Gi-Oh. Maybe it's better in paper (doubt it), but Arena is literally rigged. Like Yu-Gi-Oh, a lot of duels are decided by matchup + cointoss (who goes first). It's literally impossible for certain decks to win certain matchups, especially going second. Like, any control deck vs. Monored is a guaranteed loss. Of you're playing an Aggro deck like soldiers, you lose to removal spam. Midrange decks like Monoblack die to control decks like Azorius or Monoblue. And there's straight up nothing you can do in these situations. The client knows this, and after you've hit your daily allowed quota of fair wins, expect back to back "opponent goes first" vs whatever beats your deck until the algorithm switches off again.
It might be mechanically different from Yu-Gi-Oh, but fundamentally, the experience is the same. Maybe even worse, as Yu-Gi-Oh is fairly honest about the game being a broken mess. Meanwhile MtG presents itself as this super deep and strategic game, when nothing could be further from the truth. Duels are rarely determined by skill, they're determined by matchup + cointoss.

Dominated by aggro strategies, Monored is always extremely powerful. Currently also dominated by White aggro where curving out into Thalia and the new creature that gives her ward guarantees a win. And Soldiers which is arguably the only fun aggro strat, but on curve Thalia once again determines the duel.

Standard but with Janky digital cards. Looks fun, but the extra monetary investment makes it obnoxious to bother with. It'll have the only good rotation list though now that standard will rotate every 2 years or whatever.

Combo city, duels rarely last more than 4 turns. Expect tons of decks with no interaction as they get their OTK out asap. Terrible format. Duels are decided by who can hit their wincon first.

It's standard but with some Arena exclusive digital cards that do things you could never do on paper. Like conjure cards, an so on. Also, now that Standard will be rotating slower, it'll also be the most "fresh format" as Alchemy will be rotating yearly like standard used to.
My only gripe is that they come out with new packs way too quickly. So it's not easy to grind for it. And Arena's crafting system sucks massive donkey dick.

I've gone back an forth between MD and Arena all year, and currently, I've deleted Arena on all my devices, and only play MD from time to time on my phone.
MD respects your time. You can play it casually, and take breaks, and still have enough stuff to build whatever decks you like.
Arena practically demanda you treat it as a full time hobby if you wanna stay "in." You HAVE to grind DAILY for multiple hours and duel greuling match after greuling match with a stacked algorithm, and that alone makes the experience far more miserable than it has any right to be.
An argument could be made that as games, MTG is mechanically superior. But if the choice is between MD and Arena, I'd much rather play MD, no questions asked. Arena fricking sucks (as does MTGO) and I'd discourage anyone from ever dipping into it. That game is a souless time and money sink.

Mtg sucks balls compared to YGO. MTG is like a Warhammer tabletop game but with cards. Yugioh is like chess but the pieces have more complicated moves.

You should get staples (Maxx c, ash, called by, imperm) you need 3 of each so you should buy the bundles
For starters decks blackwing is decent and maybe dark magician? But you should make meta decks so look out for spright or branded bystial(they are very expensive) or if you want a cheap deck floowandereeze is a good one
The duel pass pays for itself in gems and gives a bunch of valuable crafting points. It's one of the best things to use your gems on if you can even get it a third of the way completed.
The structure decks are a fast way to get a mediocre to pretty good deck for extremely cheap. Competitively the best ones are Salamangreat and Blackwings. Dragonmaid and Zombies are good too if you're not looking to go for the max rank. Stay away from the Galaxy Eyes, Pendulum, and Utopia ones. They still require you to pull on their respective secret packs to have a real playable deck. Also Spellbooks while being a good deal, just aren't playable on their own. Though the Utopia one has a good UR in it so it may be worth buying 1 copy of it at some point.
I'd suggest you get 3x of whatever structure deck looks the coolest to you, other than those 4 bad ones so you have something decent to play until you decide what you want to spend your gems on.

If you just started in master duel with literally no context of what is going on, try some of the structures. Dragonmaids is probably the best one for new players, its simple to learn, pretty strong, have a decent upgrade path to dragonslop and dragon shrine is a decent staple to have. If you are more confident in playing combo, then try looking up the salamangreat and blackwings structure instead
People suggest the bundles are more thinking about the future of your account rather than the 'right now' aspect of it but its still worth it to get since it buffs your deck pretty cheaply
I had ideas for a bunch of light zombie cards that are always treated as Normal monsters with effects that frick up effect monsters except for their extra deck monsters, which turn those negative effects onto the opponent instead
I'm just running the two limited ones, but every time they resolve I'm thinking "wowie zowie that sure is strong!". Definitely meta dependent though. I wouldn't play them below like Plat 2 or something. Like really. People were playing DD Crow before they released. Now they get DD Crows that summon for free, have near boss monster stats, and additional effects on top of that.

Its ironic because I started playing wc due to duel links where they turned meta by a stroke of luck in 2019, back then I heard the archetype was so bad konami had abandoned it completely, I liked it so much I still play it on MD despite it being absolute dog water vs anything but eldlich, losing with them makes me wish for anything but buying new cards

All go across at once on Boarder's board causing them all to fall in the water. Agido triggers milling 3 Boneheimer, 1 Doitsu, and 1 Fairy Tail Snow. Snow banishes the entire GY except for GUB to get to the other side, and GUB revives itself back to the starting position.
I special summoned Adhara then special summoned Longyuan. Then I activated Destrudo in my hand and targeted Adhara to reduce Destrudo's level to 6. Now I have to level 6 monsters and it won't let me summon Tzolkin. I wasn't restricted from anything ;_;

Barkion's not really something you want to just go into on turn 1. It's more something you go into vs certain decks, or to feel safer vs mysterious backrow. Unless you're trying to cheat out Exterio with Earth Hex Sealed Fusion. She does seem good for the deck though, even if just to go into Stardust Charge Warrior before making a lvl 10 with Camellia. CAN YOU GUESS WHICH LEVEL TEN SYNCHRO MIGHT BE WORTH SUMMONING?

I know the 1-link/field spell meme is real but if there's one archetype that could get every single one of its problems solved through one of these, it's WC: just look at how much it thrived last year during events, where the power level was lower. it being the only deck that can resolve grass and STILL lose is telling enough, really

Basically the first few issues of the manga were not about the card game. Eventually the card game was introduced and the first anime episode was about Exodia (Yugi) versus Blue Eyes (Kaiba). One of the first cards ever shown was Summoned Skull. And the first spell card was Megamorph.
The original cards in the show were much more unbalanced than the card game. The series was about Yugi, some kid who is really smart so he goes to school with older kids. He finds an ancient Egyptian relic that lets him switch souls with a pharoah named Atem. He plays Dark Magician. The card game is made by a billionaire named Pegasus who plays the Toon monsters. He based the card game on ancient monsters in Egypt, that's why they're called monster cards.
The three "best" cards in the show are the Egyptian God cards, (they suck in the real game). The best canon card of all was the Winged Dragon of Ra. (Although in GX Obelisk is top because Kaiba owns the school).
The original Yu-Gi-Oh movie is about Yugi owning all 3 God cards so Kaiba asks Pegasus if there's any secret card that can stop them, and he says there is one but then a ghost gives Kaiba a second one.
The second one is a trap called Pyramid of Light, the in-movie effect is "destroy all God cards". But it's an evil card which spawns some evil ancient Egyptian guy and Kaiba and Yugi defeat him with the other card, the Canon best card in Season One which is blue eyes shining dragon. (It sucks in the real game) lol.

No, 99% of the cards can be obtained from packs or crafting, and the other 1% are in Structure Decks that you buy with in game currency
Starting the game you will get enough to make one deck with some staple cards. You're starting pretty late so you missed a lot of packs, but the meta always changes every 3-6 months.

No, you can still craft most of them excluding stuff like alt art cards. It will just be very, very expensive.
If the cards aren't in the current selection packs or in the always around secret packs you can only craft them or get them by complete chance, not directly roll for them on a pack where your odds are infinitely higher (packs give you 4 random (can be any card in the game that isn't banned) and 4 cards from the pack, which is why the odds are higher)
It's a solid time sink. I've got around 30 decks, 5-10 more half-finished without spending anything. 3 of those are absurdly resource intensive (HERO, Dino, and Endymion) so people who make decent decisions will have way more.
Just don't spend your gems in Master Packs.

Depends on the power level of what you're playing
It absolutely can be yeah, make no mistake
NTA, but I got to Mythic top 1000 every season over the last year, and very rarely did the game ever feel like it rewarded skillful play and strategy. I also built well over 30+ decks with different playstyles. Some meta, others gimmicky fun ones. My preferred playstyle also leaned toward Midrange/Control. There was a huge chunk of the time where losing felt entirely out of my control. Where, reflecting on the duel, there was no "I could have done that" type realization.
If you're talking about arena it also takes into account the cards in your deck and matches you with decks of a similar 'power level' (if you play the starter decks you will quickly notice this) so the better your deck the more swingy it will of course be (stronger decks can do more)
Magic has blowouts same way as yugioh does it just takes longer for you to notice in a game (or maybe not at all, you can know you've lost by turn 2) as opposed to simply your opponent dropping maxx C on you and you not having an answer to it
Oh yeah, MtG is just as bad as Yu-Gi-Oh. Maybe it's better in paper (doubt it), but Arena is literally rigged. Like Yu-Gi-Oh, a lot of duels are decided by matchup + cointoss (who goes first). It's literally impossible for certain decks to win certain matchups, especially going second. Like, any control deck vs. Monored is a guaranteed loss. Of you're playing an Aggro deck like soldiers, you lose to removal spam. Midrange decks like Monoblack die to control decks like Azorius or Monoblue. And there's straight up nothing you can do in these situations. The client knows this, and after you've hit your daily allowed quota of fair wins, expect back to back "opponent goes first" vs whatever beats your deck until the algorithm switches off again.
It might be mechanically different from Yu-Gi-Oh, but fundamentally, the experience is the same. Maybe even worse, as Yu-Gi-Oh is fairly honest about the game being a broken mess. Meanwhile MtG presents itself as this super deep and strategic game, when nothing could be further from the truth. Duels are rarely determined by skill, they're determined by matchup + cointoss.

I mean, here's the options we have in Arena:

Dominated by aggro strategies, Monored is always extremely powerful. Currently also dominated by White aggro where curving out into Thalia and the new creature that gives her ward guarantees a win. And Soldiers which is arguably the only fun aggro strat, but on curve Thalia once again determines the duel.
>Alchemy
Standard but with Janky digital cards. Looks fun, but the extra monetary investment makes it obnoxious to bother with. It'll have the only good rotation list though now that standard will rotate every 2 years or whatever.
>History
Combo city, duels rarely last more than 4 turns. Expect tons of decks with no interaction as they get their OTK out asap. Terrible format. Duels are decided by who can hit their wincon first.

Never played it, but it's just Historic with more cards or something. So the power level is probably even more OP.

It's standard but with some Arena exclusive digital cards that do things you could never do on paper. Like conjure cards, an so on. Also, now that Standard will be rotating slower, it'll also be the most "fresh format" as Alchemy will be rotating yearly like standard used to.
My only gripe is that they come out with new packs way too quickly. So it's not easy to grind for it. And Arena's crafting system sucks massive donkey dick.

I've gone back an forth between MD and Arena all year, and currently, I've deleted Arena on all my devices, and only play MD from time to time on my phone.
MD respects your time. You can play it casually, and take breaks, and still have enough stuff to build whatever decks you like.
Arena practically demanda you treat it as a full time hobby if you wanna stay "in." You HAVE to grind DAILY for multiple hours and duel greuling match after greuling match with a stacked algorithm, and that alone makes the experience far more miserable than it has any right to be.
An argument could be made that as games, MTG is mechanically superior. But if the choice is between MD and Arena, I'd much rather play MD, no questions asked. Arena fricking sucks (as does MTGO) and I'd discourage anyone from ever dipping into it. That game is a souless time and money sink.

If by yesterday you mean a half hour ago then yes. Like, are starter decks worth buying or no? Should I invest in a gold membership or whatever is going on now? What packs should I get?
You should get staples (Maxx c, ash, called by, imperm) you need 3 of each so you should buy the bundles
For starters decks blackwing is decent and maybe dark magician? But you should make meta decks so look out for spright or branded bystial(they are very expensive) or if you want a cheap deck floowandereeze is a good one
The duel pass pays for itself in gems and gives a bunch of valuable crafting points. It's one of the best things to use your gems on if you can even get it a third of the way completed.
The structure decks are a fast way to get a mediocre to pretty good deck for extremely cheap. Competitively the best ones are Salamangreat and Blackwings. Dragonmaid and Zombies are good too if you're not looking to go for the max rank. Stay away from the Galaxy Eyes, Pendulum, and Utopia ones. They still require you to pull on their respective secret packs to have a real playable deck. Also Spellbooks while being a good deal, just aren't playable on their own. Though the Utopia one has a good UR in it so it may be worth buying 1 copy of it at some point.
I'd suggest you get 3x of whatever structure deck looks the coolest to you, other than those 4 bad ones so you have something decent to play until you decide what you want to spend your gems on.

If you just started in master duel with literally no context of what is going on, try some of the structures. Dragonmaids is probably the best one for new players, its simple to learn, pretty strong, have a decent upgrade path to dragonslop and dragon shrine is a decent staple to have. If you are more confident in playing combo, then try looking up the salamangreat and blackwings structure instead
People suggest the bundles are more thinking about the future of your account rather than the 'right now' aspect of it but its still worth it to get since it buffs your deck pretty cheaply

I wouldn't play them below like Plat 2 or something. Like really. People were playing DD Crow before they released. Now they get DD Crows that summon for free, have near boss monster stats, and additional effects on top of that.

I'm still missing one Cartesia, Confusion and Vice Master and I wouldn't mind playing the deck through Gold, but there's no way the deck can survive in the current meta. That and the fact that no one bothers uploading decklists because who in their right mind would climb through ranked with WC?

Yu-Gi-Oh is at its best when it's meta decks vs other meta decks of similar power. Petdeck mirrors are where the game gets sacky as shit because most petdecks can't play through disruption for shit, so the game is almost always decided by who drew a hand trap and/or went first.
