No, they weren't. Like GOAT, and Edison, it's just another format where the game was actually playable for a brief period, but it's by no means "good." It's simply just not "complete shit" like it usually is. Yu-Gi-Oh has never been good, and will never be good unless you completely rewrite the core rules, and fire every moron designing overpowered cards every 6 months.
DUEA wasn't good format. Even if you played one of the best decks that format, it was cringe with how blatantly power crept the game was. The entire ARC-V era was a shitshow from start to finish.
Looking back though, past the initial Inzektor-Wind-Up-Dino Rabbit format, most of the ZeXal era was good. A lot of older decks remained playable with the right tech, provide you weren't playing Plant Synchro.

Pots are fine, I would run a second pot but then remove all the other spells besides the lab field. Lord is bricky and too slow and backrow removal now is more often evenly rather than duster/lightning storm.

I would replace Raigeki and Lightning Storm with Evenly Matched instead. With Lab decks, you can either make it just another flavor of Eldlich by putting in cards like Skill Drain, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Rivalry, and Gozen. The other kind of Lab you can play is the fun one where you put in more of the Lab furniture cards and rely on out-advantaging your opponent with them. If you want to be cheeky, you can even put in some monsters that have effects when tossed into the grave to combo with your furniture, like Tackle Crusader or the Burning Abyss monsters. Even non-engine cards like the Ishizu shufflers and Magnamhut+Druiswurm are pretty decent in this build of Lab. Don't forget about Ra Sphere Mode and Lava Golem as boardbreakers in the upcoming Kashtira meta.
The extra deck is usable now with the release of Chaos Angel and Muckraker, so maybe don't use Punishment anymore. Also, max out BIG Welcome as it triggers a lot of your Lab's effects. Welcome can also be at 1.
Please get 3 big welcomes, two less fields, more green, less red. And if you are going to play lord of heavenly prisons, might as well add imperial iron wall.

What cards are good going second in this format? I genuinely feel cursed by a gypsy or something, every maxx sneed activation is met by ash, crossout and called by every game.
You need a deck that breaks boards or nets OTKs in engine alongside generic board breakers to do better than that 30%. A tiger can't change its stripes.
Its a linear deck that ends on what is basically a Bagooska + omni-negate or pop 2 and a floodgate for the opponent's link monsters. You can combine it with Adventure and Kash for more interruptions. Its also decent going second since you can attack multiple times with their boss monster for easy OTKs once you've worked your opponent's interruption.
It's not great though, and since the gameplan consists of floodgating the opponent from attacking and using their monster effects to clear Tri-Heart it just doesn't do anything in certain matchups. It also suffers a great deal to kaijus since that kills their omni-negate trap card as well as their floodgate boss monster.
You already have kaijus, lava golems, nib, maxx, evenly, droplet, DRNM and more shit. What more do you fricking want? Most people scoop the second you drop a kaiju on them since they can't even respond.
Frankly it hardly matters. You usually need 2-3 cards to actually break a board and still have to OTK with what's left because modern meta decks will just summon everything again when their turn rolls around if you can't.

Look at the Vaylanz homosexuals with their Secret Village lock, no one floodgate or breaker is breaking that field, and they only need to open Ash, Called or Crossout to negate any hand trap you open with to stop them.
There'a also the issue of decks that under commit to the field making your breakers less valuable. Fenrir set 1 pass with ash and maxx "C" in hand is a "brick" hand and that's already a better field than Scareclaw's endboard. >You usually need 2-3 cards to actually break a board and still have to OTK with what's left because modern meta decks will just summon everything again when their turn rolls around if you can't.
Age of Overlord introduced 2 generic Extra Deck breakers specifically to deal with shit like this. The cards are OK going first but are much stronger going second.
Crimson Nova is pretty good but dies to Lab unless you get lucky with red reboot. If you don’t care about you’re win rate, pure Ra with sphere mode and soul crossing can be very fun.
Time to spend 500 super rares to craft a Skill Drain from all the cards I scrap because I only play one deck mainly. Also complete a Branded, HERO, Synchron, Dark Magician, Eldlich, Subterror, Harpies, Umi control, Dinowaifus, Red-Eyes and Beetroopers this way.

The one time I didn't open a handtrap, the Pend player preempetively used Crossout on Ash.
Not really a Maxx "C" issue, it's a function of bo1 and how broken most Yu-Gi-Oh decks are today. One card combos should be banned.

Bystials made Dragon Link relevant again. The deck was outdated even when it finally got Borrelend Dragon.
Borrelsword + Borreload + Spheres is a bad endboard.
Leaving Link 2s on the board is an open invitation for Underworld Goddess. You end up having to use Spheres sub optimally just to avoid getting the entire board wiped when 3 effect monsters are on the field.
P.U.N.K. is pretty fun. I feel like a lot of hands just autolose to literally any handtrap though, you autolose to maxx C, and your endboard eats shit to evenly which is really common.

How do I learn about deck building? I get there’s some level of experience and testing involved but are there resources outside of net decking? Like I noticed this one dude put in his video about a math mech engine and while I know the math mech cards I know nothing about what this engine is.
just look at how decks are built and look for patterns. common themes you can find are stuff like: >one copy of monsters in ED as a toolbox choice >ED monsters that are key to main strategy run at 2 (or 3) instead of 1 >core main deck cards run at 3 >filler run at 1 or 2 >toolbox tech cards run at 1 >anti-meta tech cards run at 3
things like that. you just learn it as you go

I like new formats and stuff like dark vs light because it allows me to try out new deck ideas and think about new ways to build stuff. >But it gets solved within a day

just a heads up but purrely pre-noir isn't really a deck that wins on its own merits. they draw lots of cards and make xyz blindfolded. so rather than losing to purrely cards you're losing to the handtraps they draw and the zeus they make effortlessly. their only real disruption pre-noir is plump.

Pots are fine, I would run a second pot but then remove all the other spells besides the lab field. Lord is bricky and too slow and backrow removal now is more often evenly rather than duster/lightning storm.

I would replace Raigeki and Lightning Storm with Evenly Matched instead. With Lab decks, you can either make it just another flavor of Eldlich by putting in cards like Skill Drain, Anti-Spell Fragrance, Rivalry, and Gozen. The other kind of Lab you can play is the fun one where you put in more of the Lab furniture cards and rely on out-advantaging your opponent with them. If you want to be cheeky, you can even put in some monsters that have effects when tossed into the grave to combo with your furniture, like Tackle Crusader or the Burning Abyss monsters. Even non-engine cards like the Ishizu shufflers and Magnamhut+Druiswurm are pretty decent in this build of Lab. Don't forget about Ra Sphere Mode and Lava Golem as boardbreakers in the upcoming Kashtira meta.
The extra deck is usable now with the release of Chaos Angel and Muckraker, so maybe don't use Punishment anymore. Also, max out BIG Welcome as it triggers a lot of your Lab's effects. Welcome can also be at 1.
Please get 3 big welcomes, two less fields, more green, less red. And if you are going to play lord of heavenly prisons, might as well add imperial iron wall.

You need a deck that breaks boards or nets OTKs in engine alongside generic board breakers to do better than that 30%. A tiger can't change its stripes.

Its a linear deck that ends on what is basically a Bagooska + omni-negate or pop 2 and a floodgate for the opponent's link monsters. You can combine it with Adventure and Kash for more interruptions. Its also decent going second since you can attack multiple times with their boss monster for easy OTKs once you've worked your opponent's interruption.
It's not great though, and since the gameplan consists of floodgating the opponent from attacking and using their monster effects to clear Tri-Heart it just doesn't do anything in certain matchups. It also suffers a great deal to kaijus since that kills their omni-negate trap card as well as their floodgate boss monster.

Look at the Vaylanz homosexuals with their Secret Village lock, no one floodgate or breaker is breaking that field, and they only need to open Ash, Called or Crossout to negate any hand trap you open with to stop them.
There'a also the issue of decks that under commit to the field making your breakers less valuable. Fenrir set 1 pass with ash and maxx "C" in hand is a "brick" hand and that's already a better field than Scareclaw's endboard.

Age of Overlord introduced 2 generic Extra Deck breakers specifically to deal with shit like this. The cards are OK going first but are much stronger going second.

Crimson Nova is pretty good but dies to Lab unless you get lucky with red reboot. If you don’t care about you’re win rate, pure Ra with sphere mode and soul crossing can be very fun.

How do I learn about deck building? I get there’s some level of experience and testing involved but are there resources outside of net decking? Like I noticed this one dude put in his video about a math mech engine and while I know the math mech cards I know nothing about what this engine is.
just look at how decks are built and look for patterns. common themes you can find are stuff like:
>one copy of monsters in ED as a toolbox choice
>ED monsters that are key to main strategy run at 2 (or 3) instead of 1
>core main deck cards run at 3
>filler run at 1 or 2
>toolbox tech cards run at 1
>anti-meta tech cards run at 3
things like that. you just learn it as you go
Based I’ll give it a try. It’s so hard to figure it out at times because combo routes can get really complicated at times specially when it goes into link laddering.

just a heads up but purrely pre-noir isn't really a deck that wins on its own merits. they draw lots of cards and make xyz blindfolded. so rather than losing to purrely cards you're losing to the handtraps they draw and the zeus they make effortlessly. their only real disruption pre-noir is plump.
