      Isn't this a reference to Sun/Moon?
Does the Pokemon anime have its own internal memes?

Yes, Nuggets are called Gold Balls in Japanese, and you can already tell what the joke is.

Base power does not exist in the anime. For all intents water gun and hydro pump are the same thing in the anime

You're half right. While base power isn't necessarily a thing in the anime, if a Water Gun and Hydro Pump hit eachother the Hydro Pump would win unless the Pokemon using Water Gun was absurdly powerful.

Never forget that Greninja had Cut.

Base power does exist, it's just not a quantifiable statistic like in the games. Ember and Fire Blast are in no way comparable in strength even in the anime, and Hyper Beam and its clones are revered as highly powerful and are arguably the most powerful moves a Pokemon can even use (and they're spammable in the anime).

        >Ember and Fire Blast are in no way comparable in strength even in the anime

Yes, but one Pokemon's Ember could be stronger than another Pokemon's Fire Blast

Wrong. Hydro Pump has a higher pressure than Water Gun as seen in pic related. Anime's too much of a coward to draw an engineer telling the audience how high the psi of Hydro Pump is.

Base power isn't as static as it is in the games and is entirely unique to the individual Pokemon.
A move is as powerful as the writers need it to be in that battle, so if the scenario dictated that Dracovish was THAT powerful, its Water Gun could be the equivalent of a Full-Power Water Spout or even overpower a weaker Pokemon's Hydro Pump.

I tried not to be a nerd about the anime’s inaccuracies, but I could never help but be annoyed sometimes by the lame movepools. Are Tackle/Quick Attack just easier to animate or what?

People are forgetting that anime fights are not bound to game mechanics and would actually suck if they would be lol.
Water gun seems fine. A quick, easy to use and spam long-range move for Pokemon that obviously prefers close quarter combat.
