The voice acting in 1 is pure soul, those gravelly hoarse mobsters, the junkies screaming. An easy area to halfass but they really got good actors and performances. 2's good too but it feels a little more slick.

The story is a bit more tongue in cheek, which I dont dislike.

But I feel that if you somehow mixed story elements from 2 into 1 woudl be amazing.

Mona disappears far too quick in 1, Vlad betraying in 2 seems bit forced but its a good twist that could go in 1 when you start finding out the secrets.

Max Payne 2 is definitely one of my most favorite games ever. I like it more than 1 due to how smooth the combat and movement is and how the games pacing is so quick. I can beat this game in an afternoon and it'll always be a blast, had it been slightly harder in difficulty I don't think this would even be a question of which is better

If you want a harder MP2, download the Punisher mod. All weapons are made more powerful, so enemies can tear you apart quicker. Much more in line with the difficulty from the first game.

      >I wish Max Payne had more mods, like Half-Life.

I actually bought the PC version a week or so after it was released in 2001. Played it on a Pentium celeron clocked at 555MHz, with a GeForce 256 with 32MB RAM and 128MB DDR2 with Windows 98SE. I could run the game at solid settings at 1024x768 for most of the game. The PC version did come packaged with a full set of modding tools on the disc. There was a pretty active community for Max Payne 1 on the 3DRealms web forums. I was mostly familiar with the MaxED level editor. The MaxED editor runs in DX7 as far as I can tell, and is problematic to get working correctly. The PC version of Max Payne 2 was built on an updated version of the MaxFX game engine used in max Payne 1. The home console ports of Max Payne 2 use renderware. The PC version has DX9 rendering, havok physics (before HL2) , cinematic modelling and other enhancements. The PC version also has a full set of modding tools. But they were not released on the disc, and instead were released online (via Fileplanet) and contains a better level editor that isn't buggy on newer OS's. There is a more active modding community for MP2 than there was for 1.

The game was heavy but not that heavy.

I remember I still played it fairly well on my voodoo2 and pentium 2 300, with 96 ram, started with only 32 megs.

There is shit from my childhood i had no idea how I made the right decision, from upgrading ram to getting drivers to work, as a kid i brute forced shit and never ruined the computer. Cds with free drivers and software helped.

Max Payne 1 was made using an in-house engine that was developed by Remedy called MaxFX. MaxFX made its debut in Futuremark 99, 2000, and 2001 benchmarks. The one used with Max Payne 1 has a DX 8.1 renderer, and really pushed the texture memory aspect . Though Max Payne 1 and 2 for the PC use a lot of .JPG compressed textures for storage and memory reasons. I love the look of the original game. It does support whatever resolutions your monitor supports. So it can go up to 4k and higher. But the aspect ratio is locked to 4:3. Image related is using a 16:9 mod for the PC game. But is the original game.

            >MaxFX made its debut in Futuremark 99, 2000, and 2001 benchmarks.

3DMark 99. This is the first time Remedy's MaxFX game engine gets used in anything. This version uses DX6, I think:

            3DMark 2000 uses a DX7 version of Remedy's engine:

            3DMark 2001 uses DX8.1 and Havok Physics:

Max Payne uses DX7 and DX8.1 hybrid for the PC. Max Payne 2 uses DX9 and Havok. Alan Wake also uses Remedy's MaxFX engine and runs in DX10, and American Nightmare uses DX11?

Anon 3 has a totally different feeling, the comfy and the great narration and comic panels add something.

They are very different games, 3 is tonally much more a console game. It even has turret sections.

I remember just hanging around the police station level with those two cops and the coffee machine watching lords and ladies.

I'm not talking about 3 as a whole, I just said that the story is better.
However, I do believe that 3 is better. Yeah, I know nowhere near tonally as 1 and clearly made by different devs, but so what? Game is fine on it's own.
Then again, I've disliked 2 even before 3 came out.

I much more prefer MP 1 and ends perfectly.

But MP2 did not bother me one bit, the tension is still there and I loved the secret good ending. Max deserved some alt universe where he is happy.

Not speaking of 3 being a bad game its not. but its a much more restricted console game of its gen. Rockstar changed it but didn't rape it at least. That good enough for me.

3 just does not have enough mindfrickery for me like 1 and 2.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "restricted console game" aside from the game having turret sections, to be honest, but I agree with it missing weird stuff.
As much as I dislike 2, that second dream was pretty cool with the chase and sudden ceiling disappearing.

Its more bulky heavy game anon, you know what I mean. The sticky walls. The way aim goes flat when you sprint. Press x to vault shit , instead of just jumping.

                That's what I mean.

I think you're writing it off a bit, mp3's gameplay is a lot closer to the free aim style games like max payne than the average console shooter.

I mean, sure, like I've said, different devs.
There's also a weapon limit which I would think you'd mention, but I get what you mean.
                And lot of
                >cutscene
                >shoot for a bit
                >cutscene
But unlike 2 it's has a frick you difficulty built in, it's the hardest out of 3 on maximum, by far.
And there are cool additions like
                >melee executions
                >at least twice as many weapons
                >sticky walls, say what you will but it's cool as frick to jump from them
                >combine dual wield
                >can stay on the ground after dive
Great fun. Euphoria is also a fantastic addition which fits like a glove instead of Havok that just looks goofy and weightless.

NTA but I think the weapon limit in 3 is good, if only because it allows for all those sweet animations for switching the guns between hands and rolling on the ground to pickup new ones. They add a lot of character to the action.

the brazil setting was fine, same story in a different place makes sense when you're doing a soft reboot. RS's writing of max was kind of weird though, turned him into a scream when I'm mad type.

I liked how they turned him into an alcoholic and implied he had a pill drug problem with the painkiller thing. That was neat. MP3 Max is a super impressive physical specimen btw. Constantly cut on pills + alcohol but still has incredible aim, fitness, endurance and a full head of hair.

Btw Max Payne 3 is basically an homage to the Man On Fire movie. If you liked MP3 you should check that movie out, very similar aesthetic and style.

          >I agree. I like MP3 a lot. The lengthy unskippable cutscenes were unforgivable but thankfully that's fixed with a mod. I can get why fans that really dug the originals' noir setting wouldn't like it though. Personally I enjoyed the new direction and liked the story, too.
Max Payne 3 still follows a Noir story narrative, and it actually does have some good callbacks to Max Payne 1 and 2 with the Hoboken stage flashbacks being reminiscent to the original game. Complete with max wearing his old leather coat, and getting drunk at the local bar every night (in Houser/Rockstar fashion) . The Brazilian setting was inspired by the movie Man on Fire, and Brazilian movies Elite Squad. Dan Houser does take the plot of Max Payne in a different direction. Plot doesn't quite have the 'wacky' dream-like charm of Sam Lake's scripts. I think Max Payne 3 is a really good third person shooter with some cover mechanics. It was a very high quality production, too.

Yeah its good but not whacky. And I personally really dislike cover mechanics, unless its vanquish or something.

            >1's ridiculous bullet spread and spongy enemies,

I can't speak for the home console ports. never played them. Only had the PC version back in the day. The enemy AI in the PC game does scale up to the player's skill level, resulting in some really bullet-sponge enemies. This is something that can also be broken in some cases, when playing the PC version on modern PC's. The PC version of Max Payne 2 uses an enhanced version of the MaxFX engine, that was created for the first Max Payne game. But has Havok physics, DirectX9 rendering, and some other updates. For Max Payne 2 on the PS2 and Xbox, Rockstar Vancouver used the assets from MP2 and remade the game on Criterions Renderware engine. I think max Payne 1 for PS2 and Xbox uses a ported version of the MaxFX engine. The Xbox port is better than the PS2 port. But the PC port still looks the best overall. It also looks like it controls differently, and does have pinpoint mouse aiming. I do prefer the simplistic bullet time of the first game more.

            ?t=129

I fricking love mp1 but the bullets a bit too slow, even back then i loved shooting the desert eagle at buildings and seeing how long it took.

mp 2 plays better. My dream woudl be MP1 made in 2, with some expanded storylines. Like Mona.

              >My dream woudl be MP1 made in 2,

legally, this has never been done, because it would be like piracy, including entire maps and models and audio from Max Payne 1. But it wouldn't be hard to do. Max Payne 1 and 2 are modder friendly games for the PC. Max Payne 1 came with modding tools on the CD. Max Payne 2 had them as an online download. Max Payne 1 and 2 stores all the game/ stage data in a file format called .RAS. Which is basically Remedy's version of .WAD. The dev tools come with a program called rasmaker that can unpack them. MaxED2 editor that was made for Max Payne 2 does have the option in import Max Payne 1 maps. The game could be remade, cutscenes as all, as a TC. But it would have the Max Payne 2 bullettime. I think maps would have to be edited in MaxED2, to have Havoc physics enabled to them. You could use all the assets from Max Payne 1 in Max Payne 2's engine.

Its not a complete failure but its not really a max payne game.

Me too. The best thing about 2 is how alive it feels, they really went all out with the interactivity and little details in the levels. Just a shame that most of its best levels just feel like retreads of 1's, and then like the entire middle act is that boring construction site.

here is a screenshot of Max Payne 2 running on a PC. the only mod it is using is a 16:9 screen hack. This screenshot shows off a feature that was added to MaxFX (2) for Max Payne 2, which is cinematic models for in-game cutscenes. That Max Payne 2 model is posed for this one scene. the game switches to cinematic cutscene models. Max Payne 2 PC uses DX9.

      >The game was heavy but not that heavy.
      >I remember I still played it fairly well on my voodoo2 and pentium 2 300, with 96 ram, started with only 32 megs.

I love the way both these games look still. They're so unique looking. Love how they use real photos for the textures. They have such a slick clean look to them that suits the games' noir style wonderfully. MP1&2 are loaded with soul, MP1 especially. Really enjoying replaying them after over two decades.

I love the way they look and sound, games still had high reverb which I love, in Thief and HL its great makes sounds muhc more impactful. Its shitty sounds lack this these days.

But MP1 and 2 had weird proportions, for doors and rooms, sure it was early 3d person, but in first person its kinda funny.

There is a version in a mega in the doom thread which works perfectly.

The PC versions are being sold for like $%.00 or less on Steam. I would recommend picking them up, as they may end up being delisted after the releases of the remakes. I have no information on them being delisted. I just think that will be the case. Yeah, you can pirate these games so easily. The Steam versions are DRM free. You can run them outside of Steam. And can still download them after they get delisted.

Yeah that myth is clearly the foundation of the plot but there's no reason to believe that Max is literally a Norseman sent into the future to stop Ragnarok... well... 'cept for that part where Jack Lupino tries to summon the forces of darkness...

Not that anon but they are not going for literal sure, they are going for that " the story allegorical world is a mirror of the real world thing".

So no there are no reincarnated norse gods but the metaphor works. Max did indeed not only got his revenge but saved the world. If the Witch got his way with Valkyr, she woudl prolbaby attain even greater heights become president and engulf the world in more darkness.

        So yeah ragnarok was averted.

You guys know Max Payne 1&2 are going to be remade by Remedy for Rockstar right? I sure do hope we get some trans representation this outing. We need a lot more diversity in general, the first two games were far too white. I wouldn't mind if they make Max black, that would be great, but if they can't they should at least make another important character black. His wife maybe or his partner Alex. What are your hopes and fears for the remakes? Are you looking forward to them?

I don't think they'll incorporate anything Rockstar did. Remedy's third person shooters (MP, Alan Wake, Control) all have a certain Remedy signature feel to them. I'm sure their remakes are going to be more of the same.

I wonder if MP1R and MP2R will have the same use of bullet time and other mechanics. Like will both games play and look the same or will they change up MP2R's bullet time etc like they did with the original MP sequel?

          >Alan Wake, Control
those were kind of a departure from the free aim focus in mp 1 and 2, less about constant strafe fire and more common stop and pop over the shoulder aim in modern shooters. If the remakes do end up being a quantum break reskin I'll be disappointed.

What bums me out is that the remake will probably be "fine". Like it'll be pretty good and not a complete affront to the originals -- but inevitably lacking that special something. But time will pass and they'll be good enough that people will just start saying "just play the remake bro, it's really good and the originals are basically obsolete". And if those GTA remasters are anything to go by Rockstar won't give a frick about preserving the originals.

I was pretty bummed when they announced it ngl. The first remake of anything that's really special to me. Nothing's sacred...

I get what you're saying but tbh mp 1 and 2 have always frustrated me. The gameplay concept is fantastic but there's just enough friction there that they never quite make good on that potential, 1's ridiculous bullet spread and spongy enemies, 2's broken bullet time and shitty ragdoll physics. even imagining the potential hackjob on the story I can't get mad at another crack at that formula a decade after 3.

Don't really disagree, I'd play another Max Payne game, no questions asked. It's just a problem of soul. I'd feel better about a spiritual successor, or even straight up Max Payne 4. A remake always carries with it the suggestion that the original is now busted... something is always lost in the translation, even just tightening up the gameplay, even the little quality-of-life things that nobody could really object to... and in the case of Max Payne, that something is important to me. My enjoyment of the game is at least partly influenced by factors specific to its time period and circumstances, maybe you could replace them with something equally or even more enjoyable, but it will be a DIFFERENT enjoyment that will nonetheless take the original's name... youngsters will prefer it... death will scuttle up on me... nothing is a cliche when it's happening to you...

        >1's ridiculous bullet spread and spongy enemies
        >2's broken bullet time and shitty ragdoll physics
Nah, aside from bullet time these are not the frictions in gameplay.
        My frictions are as follows:
        >1
        >can't shoot while jumping
        >can't shoot while getting up
        >leap is just too low (more realistic but just doesn't feel right)
        >some platforming jumps are way too specific
        >can't shoot explosives
        >grenade radius is huge, but molotov is tiny and the fire radius is practically a dot
Spread only fricks you up in 2 places that I can recall, right after you crash the train at the beginning there are gas tanks that you can shoot to take out the group on the left but it's way too fricking far to do reliably in time, and the second one is in the ending.
Both spongy enemies and spread become non issue when you aim to the neck/chest, same way the shotgun becomes a great weapon.
        >2
Core gameplay is fine, your dive is higher, but the bullet time is busted, that STUPID ASS reloading animation is completely moronic and it's way, WAY too easy. The actual big problem is with level design, enemies will constantly appear behind you and above you, you almost never ever need to leap because they are coming to you AND they are above/below.
In the first game you are busting into the room where the enemies are waiting for you hence why dive all the time, in the second game the enemies rush you.
        Couple that with shit like
        >now you are playing as Mona
        >now you are sniping
        >now you are escorting an NPC
        >now you are in the fun house
