Max Payne

Damn, I never played this game despite all the hype because it looked like a regular shooting. But damn I'm having a lot of fun, and the narration and comic book cutscenes are pretty cool, too.

I'm emulating the PS2 version and only the easiest difficulty is unlocked from the start, and I have been blazing through with max painkillers most of the time. Are there any codes to unlock these difficulties? I mean I'm not trying to go for a super challenge, but I don't want it to be too easy either.

why did they change his face in the sequel? it's so damn iconic

No. "Iconic" is a retroactive assessment that has been acquired over years of time. When they made the first game, they just put together what was simple and effective on a limited budget. Because really, it's just a copy of what GoldenEye did way earlier on weaker hardware.

I thought it was very memorable when it first came out, just seeing it in a magazine. It looked damn funny and just stood out because not a lot of games had character faces that were rendered that way. Made me curious about the game if anything.

This is nonsense. You either don't know what "iconic" means or you don't know what you're talking about.

You're really not helping your case; Goldeneye skins are also iconic

Because they had the money to hire actors and models instead of using the dev team and their friends and family.

Back then it didn't have the meme status it has today. The internet really helped over time.
The face is iconic NOW, not back then.

I remember playing it back then and specifically being bothered that they changed his face and reading others saying the same. Even knowing the face was goofy it was still Max Payne and it was weird to just change it.

I tried the steam version and there were audio problems that I didn't feel like figuring out how to fix.

What do I do when I'm chasing a dude who jumps on top of a moving train? I try to catch the next train but I can't jump far enough.

Thanks, but I just finished part 1, I'm in too far. But if you have Max Payne 2...

Thought it was dumb and boring when I played it. Just another third person shooter and baby killing is a bit too edgy even more my taste

Yeah the beginning was shockingly dark. But otherwise I like that the tone is all over the place. When Max talks to the Don's sister-in-law, the voice acting is very serious, but they both have these goofy grins on their faces.

It's a simple patch that you download and put in the fricking directory. You don't need to do jack shit.

I can't get the steam version to work right. Whenever I dive I'm at floor level and don't move. Like I'm laying on the ground instead of jumping. Spent hours trying to fix it, never got it working right.

the game just does that with the difficulty, it's pretty weird but all versions are like that. Sadly I couldn't find any cheats which let you play any difficulty. The game has a dynamic difficulty so if you play better the game will become harder, however if you die often you'll be fighting fewer enemies.

      Don't worry about these nerds.

you end up shooting the whole magazine into dudes who blast you as you reload

I tried the steam version but the audio was shit. I've emulated PS2 before so I did that version. I've never emulated xbox before, is it as easy to emulate nowadays?

Yeah you have to download a bunch of fixes to play on PC unfortunately. Check out the PC Gaming Wiki.

enjoy your 480i image quality instead of 1080p/4k, there's plenty of versions of games that are missing content too.
just look around it shouldn't take hours to fix basic things.

HEAVILY recommend the PC version. They had to chop the levels in parts for them to fit in the PS2 memory, the graphics are worse and the loading times are insane. If you aren't keen on aiming with a mouse don't worry because the game isn't about aiming anyway, even if the crosshair is right on top of a guy the bullet might miss (if you're too far away that is).

OP here, just finished the first game. I replayed the last mission 20 times, shooting the 2 cables but then nothing happened, then it randomly just worked one time.

Also, on the mission where Max finds the computer in the undeground lab revealing his family's murder was planned and then the self-destruct countdown starts, I noticed for some reason I was invincible. I fell through the grate in the elevator and then was just stuck there and couldn't kill myself with grades. Even when reloading the level, and when replaying the previous level, I was always invincible in that mission. Fortunately there are no enemies, only trip mines. And then that never happened again for the rest of the game.

Oh yeah, also came to say how weird it is that the cutscene lines are read seriously but the actors are making such goofy faces.

Another thread derailed by PCfats... how unsurprising. That being said, play the Xbox version at least. I wouldn't even bother trying out the GC or PS2 versions of something like Splinter Cell or Max Payne.
