Jokes aside, I do get the rough idea of what they meant with this. But they had it backwards, since the water cooler is where you go to gab AFTER about what you watched, not where you go TO watch stuff.
Nintendo introducing the Seal of Quality system in Japan for the Super Famicom, causing devs to look for alternatives like the Sega CD and 3DO
Since those systems were dying but the devs really enjoyed the freedoms they had with them it was a logical next step for a lot of devs to jump over to the PlayStation
The fact that the same devs who can't optimize for shit now, managed to get games running at 30fps and rarely even 60fps on those shits with worse single core perf than the weakest core 2 duo in 2006, is baffling.
But Sony and the Playstation survived. The Xbox One reveal tanked the Xbox brand so hard Microsoft is still trying to recover from it an entire decade later.
The great irony of the Xbox One is that everything it was pushing ended up becoming true anyway.
>The future of gaming is digital >The future of gaming is always online >The future is gaming is on multimedia devices, dedicated gaming hardware is an antiquated concept.
Microsoft was ultimately right about everything, they just presented it in the worst possible way and before people were ready.
"Always online" still isn't true by any means. The rest is alright, but there's still an endless litany of games to play that have no online requirements.
>The future of gaming is digital
Sadly true. It wasn't even just Ganker complaining about pushing gaming towards digital. Back then everyone fucking hated it. And then suddenly, nobody minded anymore. >The future of gaming is always online
Aside from games that are primarily or exclusively multiplayer, the live service model hasn't managed to establish itself. Most recently, gotham knights had to reverse their decision to make it a live-service because nobody fucking bought it. >The future is gaming is on multimedia devices, dedicated gaming hardware is an antiquated concept
Who the fuck uses their consoles for anything but gaming and maybe discord? Nobody uses it for netflix or other shit. Your TV does that by itself.
always online still isn't true, and it's still only the Xbox that needs to authenticate online before it can function offline.
PS4/PS5 you can play games out of the box without internet, and this is why I continue to collect for playstation and disregard the xbox despite loving the 360.
for example:
Forza Horizon 5:

R&C Rift Apart:

it's a disease that effects every xbox game since it's a console issue (that MS doesn't acknowledge is an issue).
Another issue is that going into the PS5/XSX gen, Sony released PS4 and PS5 games as separate discs with the content on the disc, while MS released "Play Anywhere" discs which included only the Xbox One version on disc, if at all, they require you to download the game.
SeX games play natively and don't require downloads.
Only backwards compatible games require certain downloads because Xbox backwards compatability is a real thing. Most Xbox One games don't even require a download but will work better if they do get it.
Playstation "backwards compatability" is just "let's hope the PS4 games work on PS5 lol" which is essentially the same as playing Xbone games on your SeX without downloading the compatability environment.
You don't NEED to be online, ever. You can choose to use a guest gamer tag when you first start up the system so that you don't have to log into your MS account at all.
Don Mattrick did not predict a single fucking thing, people already knew that DRM was going to weasel its way onto 8th gen consoles, the only thing he did was sink XBOX and act like a smug ass hole that killed Halo and ruined Bungie's relationship with Microsoft.
There are plenty of legitimate reasons to shit on Sony and Nintendo, but there cannot be a console war when something like this happens A DECADE AGO and the company has yet to recover from it.
Sony recovered from E3 2006.
Nintendo recovered from the Wii U so well that people forget it even happened.
If the Xbox X/S does not bounce back by the end of this gen, i think MS just sticks to Game Pass and turns the Xbox brand into a digital streaming platform.
What would you do to fix everything? Microsoft is just an american company who never even really cared about videogames.
The few people that actually cared and managed to put the foundation for Xbox are gone.
The only real competitor to Microsoft is Sony and is too established. Nintendo managed to recover because they took a different market share. The only way for Microsoft to recover is to get a different market share from Sony but it's hard since Xbox was always seen as a playstation alternative.
Compelling software will eventually come, there's no doubt about it because Microsoft literally spent billions on videogames studios who makes rpg and fps games, so just what Xbox affianced want. Now we just have to wait hoping that the software will be worth the wait.
The sad thing is that the Series X should've been where they came out swinging, but their strategy was no games and shilling a subscription service that had already been out for years
The Series consoles will never bounce back because there's no games. They'll get some of the normalfag+kids audience but anyone who likes videogames already owns a PC so has no reason to buy one.
>was meant to become the next water cooler
>didn't make my water any cooler

That was last century you bimbo
>xbox one and ps4 had jaguar cores running at 1.75/1.6ghz
what the actual fuck
The fact that the same devs who can't optimize for shit now, managed to get games running at 30fps and rarely even 60fps on those shits with worse single core perf than the weakest core 2 duo in 2006, is baffling.
FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS
But Sony and the Playstation survived. The Xbox One reveal tanked the Xbox brand so hard Microsoft is still trying to recover from it an entire decade later.
>a flop so hard it killed Xbox for two generations
Holy shit and the series X is selling worse

The future is "always online", unfortunately.

Oh yeah, they didn't see smart TVs coming at all.

I watched this shit live on my 17th birthday. Time flies, god damn
It wasn't a blunder, he was just telling the truth. The world needs more honest people like him, now more than ever.

Don Mattrick is a war criminal.
The Xbox One still sold more than the Wii U.
Nintendo also had the 3DS that generation, and that outsold the Xbox One.

Start with compelling software
Compelling software will eventually come, there's no doubt about it because Microsoft literally spent billions on videogames studios who makes rpg and fps games, so just what Xbox affianced want. Now we just have to wait hoping that the software will be worth the wait.

It doesn't matter for Microsoft. Once they close the deal on Activision it's all over.
But the one game that would get people off of sony consoles is CoD and they aren't making that an xbox exclusive.
xbox go home
Still better than Xbox Series, by far
