Are we playing the same game? The sieges in Medieval II are GOAT.

They are dogshit. The streetfighting in these games fricking blows. At least in Rome1 you could just get pikemen put them in the breach and the game fricking played itself.
The sieges in Medieval 2 are such a goddamn grind. Cavalry is nearly useless and it's hard to hit targets with archers. The only really useful units are melee infantry and it takes like 40 minutes to grind down the enemy force slowly.

Sounds to me that you are just bad at them.

Nah you are just fricking stupid. You break a wall and the enemy concentrates like 2000 soldiers on a 100 foot square and it's just a moronic grind. You can't lose them. They suck and you are moronic for liking that jank shit. Sieges in these games have always sucked.

            Anonymous

Looks to me like you have nostalgia googles and is also likely bad at the game for thinking this jankfest is something special when it is one of the most braindead game in series

            These almost never happen.
95 percent of siege battles will be offensive with the enemy defending and blobbing 2000 soldiers in the town square like a moron. It's rare that the AI is smart enough to put you in a position where you actually have to defend your castles without having a nearby reinforcing army ready to shoo them off before they even get close.

Nobody said that but of course you have to create a strawman to defend yourself because the medieval 2 siege ai can't defend itself either.

nta but I get major "that part" syndrome for any total war sieges. I almost like the warhammer ones better, not because they are actually good but because many of the minor settlements don't have walls and the big ones that do can be cheese more easily to just get them out of the way. goes without saying but ai and pathfinding in the streets is just so bad. And the multilayered sieges with interior walls for the castles sounds cool but just ends up being more tedious as you slowly move siege and units through the city. you always played that shit on max speed and still wished it went 4x faster.

still love medieval 2 though and he was a good friend

They'd be pretty good... if they worked properly and unexploitably. Pathing inside cities is absolutely ass so you definitely don't want to fight in the streets. If you can't stealth cap the city (and there can well be situations where you are capping but the AI doesn't do anything) then the fight in the middle against unbreakable morale units is a tiresome slog since you can't control units properly. The "proper" way to do them is not to fight the defenders but e.g. drop ladders on one side of the city, wait until AI repositions units to other side where you have ladders active (but don't attack), then pick the ladders up and move in unopposed. And since you have to wait to build siege equipment, realistically you don't end up fighting offensive sieges anyway because you can siege with a weaker force that the AI sallies against and you get to cap the city on the same turn. Etc. Basically, they're ass if you do them "as intended", unsatisfying if you do them effectively.

Really, the only sieges in TW I like are in Shogun 2/Fall of the Samurai: even S2 has pathing issues on larger siege maps, but they work really smoothly relatively speaking, and on defense you actually get to use defense in depth and sallies in a meaningful way rather than just slaughtering enemies at one choke point, on offense it requires a systematic approach of finding weaknesses and reinforcing successes. And while of course you can win offensive sieges with favorable casualty ratio so the AI is doing something wrong by not being able to utilize the defender's advantage, it doesn't feel completely cheap unlike the sort of approaches that work in M2. And in FotS Armstrong guns are just fun to use even if they kinda trivialize the whole thing (because they're slow and the opportunity cost of researching them is quite steep, I personally tend not to aim for them until just before Realm's Divide event): I don't necessarily mind easy so long as it's fun.

I think they were better in Rome not much better though. The rome unit roster lent itself to the street fighting better well unless you are playing a faction like Scythia or Parthia.

I think if they made a new Empire Total War that wasn't a buggy dogshit mess, made use of the gameplay development put forward in Fall of the Samurai and added the cool Faction/Leader abilities like Three Kingdoms and Warhammer to spice up campaigns they'd have a decent game.

Sengoku Jidai and Three Kingdoms is such a perfect era with so many colorful characters with the explicit goal of "Become Ruler of All of X" that I find it hard to be as interested in "Medieval Europe" which is such a massive zone that was never historically unified to the degree it happens in Medieval Total War. Sure there was Carolingians, and England gave a good show of taking parts of France and the Hapsburgs got pretty huge but no one came close to the idea of something like Rome 2: Electric Boogaloo.

It's kind of why I liked Medieval 2s DLCs over the base game but those games were pretty limited faction wise.

The guy that made Darthmod is making another ultimate general game based around the revolutionary war it looks pretty good from what I've seen so far although they don't have CA level resources so graphically it's not going to be nearly as polished.

Well, maybe they'll still find the resources to add reload animations

IDK the gameplay is from a zoomed out perspective and you can't look in too deep. What I like about it though is that maneuvering around the campaign map is based in a real time system so you are going to get some actual campaign map shenanigans like when you watch a historical video about napoleonic tactics. Choosing where and when to engage seems like it's going to be more fun than relying on the current turn system that you see in total war where armies can just teleport around the campaign map.

For the record, I was just poking fun at Warhammer in which guns don't have reload animations. I've enjoyed Ultimate General: Gettysburg/Civil War, and I look forward to the new one.

I wish someone wiped my memory of this game so I could enjoy it again. I've played every faction multiple times and played basically every good mod there is as well, so anytime I feel like playing, I think "I've already done this exact same thing many times before" and I get bored very fast. I was absolutely obsessed with this game for years and grinded all the fun out of it.

I did this for almost every single game in the series. Rome Med2 empire napoleon shogun. I just can't even bring myself to really play them anymore. It also doesn't help that alot of really good or obscure mods have disappeared from the internet.
They had this one mod for Napoleon that I thought was probably the best mod for any of the gunpowder games called La Montee De Lempire and there are problems with current versions of windows and there is some weird user script issue and I can't get it to run anymore.

Compared to sieges throughout the rest of the series they're fantastic because they're not as slow as something like Rome or Medieval in the early period. You don't have to wait for siege equipment or anything, you can attack right away.

The entirety of s2 surfers from a boring setting tbh. The sieges work well on a techinical level but are pretty much the same no matter what happens in the game or what turn you are in

I'm just not a big fan of the army compositions in shogun 2. Cavalry feels pretty underwhelming and squishy and it feels like building full armies of samurai is a money pit and ends up getting you killed. It's like the best armies are just a bunch of spear Black folk and a few samurai units sprinkled in with a frickload of archers.

I like them more that sieges that are just a bloodbath at the gate
You can get dynamic fights that span the whole town, with cavalry flanking climbers, archers shooting and falling back to higher tiers, a general with combat techs holding the capture point, etc
