Ape Escape 1 is the only good one. Fricking hell when I played 2 and heard the state of that soundtrack. What the frick happened?
The composer was Hayame Koji, not Terada (AE1) that's why. Thankfully Terada came back for 3.
2 had a different composer from 1 and 3, and while i think the ost has some hits like land of the apes and pirate isle, a lot of the soundtrack is bad or muddled behind some baffling soundfont choices.
you should probably try 3, it uses 2's engine but finetunes everything to make it an all around better experience.

get to playing it as soon as you can, as someone who marathoned the games as soon as i had everything 1 is solid from beginning to end, even if i will always cherish 3 for being my introduction i do think that game should've handled a couple things better (have monkeys snatch more than mainly just the club and net and do something with that, like have them snipe you with the slingback shooter or get to higher ground with the sky flyer)

I grew up playing the game during my childhood and i still like it, sue me. Ape Escape is a unique series and you can't deny that it is. The only reason i don't like that people took an interest in the series is all the weirdos obsession with 3 for the wrong reasons.

if real, i kind of said this in an earlier post but make it so that the monkeys can swipe any gadget and use it. just a couple thoughts for at least most of the gadgets i have are

dash hoop and sky flyer are self explanatory, the monkey zips off to evade capture, maybe have the monkey drop it or throw it back down once far enough away moreso in case with the latter just in case it flies up somewhere you can't reach without it's use
maybe in practice it's a bit moronic but i just want the monkeys to steal more than the most basic gadgets an it sucks 3 or a sequel didn't expand on it.

Alright. So if you get hit there’s a chance that you drop your tool. If the enemy gets the sticky hand they can stick on to you. And get a hit in from far away. Just to show an example.

maybe have a slightly lesser chance that one of the inactive gadgets gets knocked out instead since for the most part at least in the actual games (despite only 3 having the steal mechanic), 99% of situations you're coming in on the monkey with the club or the net.

Try and fix Ape Escape's biggest issue and make it so you don't get thrown out of a level after getting the monkey quota.

some levels can be a bit tedious (frick moon base's magic punch monkey being right at the fricking end who designed that shit) but i still feel the postgame roundups are fun. and 2/3 even have the super rare/password monkeys for a bit more spice (granted the password ones can be input at any time but a couple are locked behind super monkey areas already).
give them a chance, they're fun games.

No right stick means X button was used for the gadget so there are 3 gadget slots in on the loose. Also smoother graphics and different voice actors. I like Raz Spike but I'm also nostalgic for deep voice Spike from the original US dub.

I'd say so. It's a decent enough platformer with a unique gameplay style and catching monkies it a lot of fun, especially in AE2. The alalog gimmick's immersive and engaging when catching monkies, but for mundane things like controlling a raft or driving a car (not the RC toy car) is fricking annoying and tedious, but thankfully they're used sparingly. Also ymmv on your finger dexterity, it can be pretty tirering doing circular motions when performing actions with the propeller or hoolahoop.

I've always loved Ape Escape, ever since it was new. Game blew my mind as a kid. Keep in mind it was one of the first PSX games to use the dual shock controller. It stuck out.
