What does that have to do with anything? Megas were far from the first new battle mechanic. Hidden Abilities also gave Pokemon special snowflake elements and they were eventually brought back after being cut twice.
It's time to bring back Mega Evolution and hopefully Triples.

What are battle gimmicks then? It's just a little weird to draw the line at this specific Pokemon getting a special snowflake form.
The fact doesn't really change that megas were a staple for multiple generations and then randomly got dropped out of nowhere. And while other battle gimmicks like abilities/held items were also cut at some points they eventually came back. It is incredibly bizarre megas have been kept in the box for this long.

Megas are different from regular evos in the fact that the designers can make them OP as hell without needing to worry about competitive balance because of how big of a difference not being able to hold an item makes

There has never been an established rule stating that pokemon with mega evolutions cannot also have a regular evolution. The doom and gloom stems from autistic headcanon. That being said, Game Freak is one of the most incompetent large-profile dev teams, and they have failed time and time again to properly balance shitmon. The fact that some shitmon received something in mega evolution very likely means they’ll skipped over when / if rebalancing is being considered in the future.

Johto starters never would have gotten megas, Game Freak has always hated Johto and just sees it as Kanto’s backyard. Also they think the Johto starters are too “babyish” to get super saiyan transformation
