Mega Evolution

What is it about Megas that kept them so popular all this time? Gamefreak has been trying for 2 gens now to pretend they don't exist, 3 if you want to count them sidelining them in SM. Despite that, they still have many fans wanting them back, and whenever they are put head to head with the gimmicks that came after in polls, Megas still win by a landslide. The Pokemon Company themselves see this and have continued putting Megas in other parts of the franchise Game Freak isn't involved in. Why do Megas have such staying power while the other gimmicks don't?

They're the gen 1 of gimmicks

Because people care more about the concept than how broken it is and megashit is hands down the best concept. It's also the first gimmick and pokegays love to give a pass to any trend starter.

      Literally ,

      >What is it about Megas that kept them so popular all this time?
Most Pokemon fans are casual morons who don't ever touch PvP. Megas appeal the most to those people because they get to stare at sparkly new shillmon designs even though gameplay wise they're the worst gimmick ever.

Why do you think 99% of the criticism of Teras is just "WAAAAAH THE HATS LOOK SILLY"? these people don't actually play the game so they don't care about gameplay.

      and

      >What is it about Megas that kept them so popular all this time?
The appeal of megas is taking a Pokemon an elevating it to essentially a minor deity. None of the other gimmicks can compare
Z-moves=trainer does a silly dance (Pokemon itself is unchanged)
      Dynamax=become a parade float
Tera= become shiny and get a lame hat
There's a reason they the only complaint about Megas is who got them/who didn't get them.

      are right

      Basically what and

“Your Pokémon goes super saijin” is an immediately understandable, appealing concept that works with the established tone and aesthetic of the games.
Whereas “your Pokémon does a stupid move” is nowhere near as exciting
“Your Pokémon grows by 200 feet” looks stupid and feels out of place
And “your Pokémon gets a big moronic crystal hat” is fricking moronic

said, and also the fact that megas all functionally played like new pokemon. They felt like an actual extension of a specific pokemon, with tailor made stats, ability, and playstyle. Part of what makes the other gimmicks boring is how homogenized they are in addition to looking lame, and the Z-moves/dynamax forms specific to certain pokemon are basically one and done things. Compare Charizard’s mega(s) to its Gmax
      >Mega
Turns into a dragon with a physical attacker spread and an ability that buffs its physical moves/turns into a nuclear sun setter with a stat spread geared toward special attack; either of these forms remain until the end of the battle and your partner pokemon is as powerful as a legendary pokemon.
      >Gmax
It’s Charizard but uh… it has 2x hp and can use fire spin, but this is only for 3 turns? And if you switch it out during those three turns it’s just regular Charizard again.

Another example would be Banette. Its regular form is a sort of proto-rampardos, except it trades its HP for marginally better defenses. The only thing it has going for it is STAB Shadow Sneak. Mega Evolution turned it into a BETTER version of Rampardos by granting it Prankster. Fighting a Mega Blaziken? Neuter it with Role Play. Opponent sends in a physical wall? Hope it likes being poisoned. Almost out of HP? Destiny bond. What makes it better than most other Prankster users is that its offenses are amazing. Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch and Pursuit are great offensive tools and can utterly decimate many opponents hoping to kill it or switch out. Sure, Tornadus and Thundurus are bulkier and have great offenses too, but they're weak to Stealth Rock and have less status options than Banette. Pretty much the only thing they have over banette is good special attack and tailwind access

      Mega>>

      [...]

      >Z-move>Tera.

      [...]

The strongest Megas were overcentralizing and the Mega CHARIZARD's in particular ruined the game, and the few Megas for the shitmons had the opposite problem of not being worth the Mega Slot because the shillmons megas were just that broken. Torkoal got far more from Drought than Absol did from its Mega but Torkoal will forever have value because it gets to keep Drought while Absol is worthless.

      Genwunners of the battle gimmicks.

fitting since Megas's main purpose was to give GenWun even more privilege than it all ready gets

Aesthetics are important. People like things that look/feel cool, and they dislike things that look/feel ridiculous and ugly.

Megas expand on the core message of the franchise, which is "believe in your bromon and they can surpass all limits and win you the fight," were a natural step from the 3-stage evolution system, and basically were all around good additions.

Why do you? I actually have a Dudunsparce from series 1 EVd to outspeed max speed Garchomp after one agility or tailwind so it can engage in funny flinch hax. That doesn’t change that if you want do well in tournaments the meta is super rigid

Would the XY anime have something to do with how popular Mega Evolutions are? The Pokemon community seems to hold it in high regard and maybe that popularity bled through to the concept itself?

The main relation between the two is just the source of the praise. Both presented the idea of "this old thing is back but *cool* now!" And then in reality we're basically just the same poor design as usual, but some people fell for the marketing and grew attached. A lot of the people who still praise megas as "a buff to old weak pokemon!" Instead of obvious shilling are the same ones who say Ash was "definitely going to win this time, Greninja was so strong! We were robbed!"

Glad I'm not the only one who saw the idea as basically "Super Saiyan via Power of Friendship".

Also it helps that the artists actually created new organic evolution designs. That's what Pokemon like the most- looking at cool new Pokemon designs.

All the other gimmicks don't put in nearly so much effort in art design.
Z-moves - Pokemon stay the same
      Dynamax- Pokemon get bigger
Terrastalization - Pokemon get a crystal skin. I'm convinced that the designers added that stupid hat to try to fool everyone that they were not just phoning it in.

Personally I loved making teams around one mega to maximize the damage it could deal, using trapping and different cores to ensure it got a clean sweep just felt very rewarding, it's an element of gameplay that is sorely missed in my perspective

Sure you can make it work with something like a set up sweeper or a cleaner but it's just not the same
