I thought it was a cheap marketing campaign for terrible developers to try and get exposure for their terrible games. Just a bunch of junk, no good games.

Pretty much. The demos I tried sucked dicks.

It looked like a lot of indie developers were trying to get in on the action. Before they try to market their games, they should first try learning how to make a good game.

It's pretty telling that most of them didn't even get the fundamentals right. Movement, shooting, fighting, everything felt fricking awful.
Meanwhile I've played plenty of indie games that had nothing to envy to commercial titles because they got the core gameplay right.

          >all this dislike
Guess the Steam Next Fest is getting too popular for Ganker now?

Did you even try the demos? They were fricking dogshit you captain contrarian.

Frick off and keep seething me and others still found demos we liked.

I recognized some of these demos from kickstarter, and not in a good way lol

I liked Inscryption, I expected it to be le spooky dark souls of card games with jumpscares but it was actually pretty tame and nice, felt like I wasn't an idiot when I used squirrels to block a bear's attacks while a different animal pelted the GM
SANNABI was fun, the swinging is fluid and the story caught me off when it went from tragic to a bit funny
All in all though I barely saw any demos that caught my eye, it was far less interesting than the previous Next Fest

The only thing I agree with you is that a lot of these games aren't that far off from flash games when it comes to gameplay, a gimmick that lasts a few hours or so, but now with a big price tag because even though the gameplay is the same, the technology and the time spent working with it has massively increased to the point the only way for the developer to consider it worth their while is to give it a price tag that puts people off, but if they don't make use of the modern technology there's a high chance they will barely sell anything because the game looks too bad for most people to be interested in, but at least that way the time otherwise spent on graphics could be spent on refining gameplay.
There's also the problem of manpower, it's rare for one person to make everything good because of the specific set of skills needed to make a videogame like programming knowledge AND art skills (with a few exceptions like Dwarf Fortress), so people are likely going to get help, if it's from a friend then all could be well but if it's from an employee that employee has to be paid to make it worth their while, so the indie game can't afford to remain obscure with few sales.

Sure, I have nothing but respect for the amount of work that indie devs have to put in. But at the same time, I just want to play a good game.

Pretty much. The demos I tried sucked dicks.

There's always a lot of trash games in these events, but I still had fun with the following:

      >The Good Life
      >Storyteller
      >MAZEMAN
      >Arthurian Legends
      >Urban Strife
      >Forgive Me Father
      >Terror of Hemasaurus
      >Rescue Party: Live!
      >CULTIC
      >Mad Streets
      >Spectacular Sparky
      >The Bookwalker
      >Hypnagogia: Boundless Dreams
      >Blood West
      >Blade of Darkness
      >INCANTAMENTUM
      >Lumencraft
      >Potato Flowers in Full Bloom
      >POSTAL: Brain Damaged
      >Inscryption
      >Fallen Aces
      >ANNO: Mutationem
      >Neverlooted Dungeon

I'm well aware that pretty much all of these are rehashes, or just mediocre games, but I still enjoyed trying them and I wishlisted most of them.

Also, I played Conscript, Moons of Darsalon, and Tactical Galactical during a previous event, so I didn't try the demos this time (I only know that Conscript's demo changed stuff). Those are solid and I already had them wishlisted.

The problem is that you claim that indies are the only games worth playing when most of them are infinitely worse than commercial games.
Right now I'm playing Nioh 2 and Deep Rock Galactic; you're telling me to drop both to play Succubus with a Gun instead.

          Anonymous

I don't claim that, you're confusing me with someone else. My favorite games are mostly big budget titles, both Western and Japanese. My favorite game so far this year was Resident Evil: Village and I'm looking forward to Metroid Dread, Halo Infinite, and Far Cry 6.

Also, I forgot to include Starship Troopers on my list before.

Yeah, your complaints are reasonable. It's shills or devs themselves that make it black-and-white and claim that you can't like both big- and low- budget games. There's also different kinds of enjoyment. I can enjoy one game because it's innovative and fresh, another because it's an impressive all-in-one, another because it's a quality throwback to an old genre I like, etc.

Not sure why this thread is much more negative than the last. Sure there is a lot of thrash but also some good / promising stuff.

    Wishlisted:
    Sannabi (surprisingly good)
Ardein.fall (really fun, going to buy it if cheap)
ANNO: Mutationem (overall good, but the combat is missing something)

Also played the Starhip Troopers rts, was okay but got bored of it during the 3rd mission.

    Wishlisted
    >TUNIC
    >Firegirl
    >Hunt the Night
    >War Mongrels
    >ANNO: Mutationem
Had fun with all of them but they need to improve the hitboxes on Hunt the Night and ANNO's combat was lacking something.
Tried Idorah and man, it seems really clunky. The jumps are fricked and how it's possible to not have a button to not grab the ledges.

A lot of demos were buggy and unpolished, worse than usual tbh.
    >Hunt the Night Demo
Was freezing my controller at every checkpoint and the beginning of bossfight.
    >Project Warlock II Demo
They tied your firerate to your framerate, how the frick do you do that in 2021.

Total I added those games (and most of them are chink ones, which is either sad or really good, dunno which yet)
    >Ultra Age
Budget character action, feels like something in between Nier Automata and Enslaved. The budget shows when you enter the same room 5 times in the row while fighting the same 3 enemies in different configuration. If I pick it up or not entirely depends on the price.
    >Soda Crisis
Kinda okay run'n'gun, it feels good but someone should tell them about diagonals.
    >SANNABI: The Revenant
Reminds me of Katana Zero, decent and satisfying movement options with your grapple hook but level design leaves a lot to be desired.
    >Fallen Aces
I am guessing it's gzdoom-engine game, very stylish but a bit too simple.
Overall kinda disappointing fest to be honest, almost every fest I added games that I really wanted to play but this time even those that I added were very meh.

Inscription was pretty great, ended up pre-ordering it. Was let down with Anno Mutationem, great exploration, boring combat. Legit thought it's gonna use battle network combat

      Anonymous

If Anno's combat gets an improvement then I might grab it. When I saw the screenshots I thought movement was entirely 2D and was delightfully surprised by the full 3D exploration. Combat wasn't bad, it was just bland, so spicing it up just a bit would be enough for me to get it on sale.

Conscript definitely flew under the radar. The combat is shit but it's scary and very atmospheric. The war sounds are very good

The page was kind of inconclusive on what the threat is, I have to look into it. I assume you're not fighting paranormal shit, right? It's more horrors of trench warfare but also sort of like Deadwood?
