Nah the game is just bullshit. Mashing the shoot button is not difficult or fun or clever design. Neither is spamming random UFOs with 1 billion HP to defend the giant UFO wall with 1 zillion HP. It's lazy and it's cheap to steal money.
>the final boss is disgustingly cynical in its attempt to farm you for quarters.
What the frick are you talking about, 2/X has one of the eaiest final bosses in the series.
If you don't have 80 bombs stocked up then you can just forget about 1CCing that mess of a final boss. Any boss that requires you to basically skip its entire attack phase is beyond terrible.
Slug 5 is a huge step back for the Metal Slug series.
The slide mechanic is extremely frustrating and will lead to frequent missteps and severely limits your ability to jump from crouch (which is very common).
The bosses range from underwhelming to infuriating, with frustrating randomized patterns, way too much health, spending majority of the fight untargetable off-screen, and also very buggy, even unfinished.
The level design is just all over the place, with new enemies that add nothing to the game, long sections where you just crouch shoot repeatedly, waste of time Slug sections that last less than a minute and pose no risk of ever dying, elite enemies that have gargantuan healthbars, and constant grenade spam.
i played all of them a frickton and have particularly high nostalgia for 4 since it was the first metal slug i owned.
it's still easily the worst one.
In what ways is 4 bad? Because it reuses assets like all the games do? Because it removes a lot of bloat and gimmick bullshit? 3 was stuffed with so much bullshit because it was their last game so they just threw every single thing they had in the game with vast majority of it being poorly utilized. 4 has excellent moment to moment gameplay and design, I don't give a damn if it's derivative or the story sucks or whatever.
>In what ways is 4 bad?
Basically, everything said in that earlier post is blatantly wrong except for the slug attack part. >Because it reuses assets like all the games do?
4 is way more blatant about it than the other games, each new game introduced new content with their own unique sprite, whether it was good or not, but every single new content in 4 is just reskinned from someone else. >Because it removes a lot of bloat and gimmick bullshit?
Yes, and as a result feels like a step back, like they're back to ms1 except i'd rather be playing ms1 instead if that's the case. >4 has excellent moment to moment gameplay and design
A lot of the fights is just spamming the same enemies over and over again including during the boss fights, granted the other games did this too(and arguably 6 and 7 are even worse in this aspect), but it did this way more than the previous games did.
All in all, MS4 feels like a fanmade romhack with a budget rather than an official game.

Every level and boss of 4 is a banger. It feels like a return to form for the series and is like the first game turned up to 11. The final level especially is really well done, feeling like a continuous gauntlet of challenges that require a unique approach without resorting to bullet sponges and just sitting in the corner crouch shooting. You really have to be aggressive with how you take out enemies and think about your routing.
4 is interesting because what it does with enemy layouts, setpieces, the environments, weapon locations, etc. So many parts from 3 onward just spam you with bullet sponge enemies where you slowly edge up the screen, sit in a corner and crouch shoot. Whereas 4 is always switching it up on you and making it so you have to think about what weapons to grab, when to be aggressive vs. defensive, rushing past/bypassing certain sections or taking it slow, strategizing routing certain weapons and the Slug through the level. Just feels the level design is a lot more thoughtful in terms of gameplay than just throwing a monster closet of bullet sponges at you.

When you just go through credit feeding and basedfacing at the braindead spectacle, I can see why people would prefer 3. 4 is actually a lot better as a GAME, removing shallow filler that makes you basedface the first time but becomes tedious on repeat plays, and is a lot more fun to learn the routing and master the levels and bosses, playing for no-miss, speed, or score

>Not doing metal slug anthology hardest difficulty all games
Suck my dick larper
The multiple weapon system thing is a decent idea in theory, but is executed very poorly. Weapons have very little ammo and it's a pain constantly juggling between them and dodging the shitty weapons that the game showers you in. The game is also ugly and filled to the brim with bullet sponges.
3 has great sections but is weighed down by too much bloat and filler and gimmicks, whereas 6 feels more consistent throughout, just a bit uninspired and doesn't really have many standout memorable sections.
>ride metal slug >jump out of it from and back inside to take advantage of iframes >????? >game beaten
Yeah I gotta say it, you lack skill
That's 1 (and 3 and 6). I mean 2 does give you a Slug, but only in the final part of the fight, and the section before it arrives can be very brutal. Once you know how to approach it, it's much more reasonable, but even with a full stock of grenades and farming lasers for the final phase, things can still easily go wrong before the Slug arrives, and even just getting the Slug in position to cheese the fight is pretty difficult as you can quickly get overwhelmed, and trying to take down multiple UFOs flying all over the screen while in a big, bulky Slug is not ideal.
>Weapons have very little ammo
Ammo is all over the place in MS6, take the Heavy Machine Gun [H] for example: in MS1-5 is 200, in MS6 easy mode is 300, and in MS6 hard mode is 150. MS7 fixed this issue and reverted to MS1-5 values except for hard mode.
I never played easy mode, but Heavy MG in hard mode gives you 100 on all characters except Fio, who has 50% more, and Ralph who has half.
While you get half the ammo for Heavy MG, Dual MG, Laser, and Super Grenade, it's even worse for other weapons like Flameshot, Rocket Launcher, Shotgun, and Iron Lizard where only get a third the ammo of previous games, and then chaser only gets a quarter.
It's a fricking joke, you blow through the weapons so fast especially with how many bullet sponges there are, and the game constantly showers you in such a variety of random weapons that it's difficult to actually consistently route and keep using a particular weapon. Very often, just the animation time to swap back to your pistol almost offsets the advantage of most of these weapons. The whole system just feels very sloppy and poorly thought out.
I am not good enough at video games to 1CC any of them and I'm not afraid to admit that or the fact that this is probably why 3 is at the top of my list since it seems the most fricked to 1CC. Really looking forward to Tactics if it's not vaporware.
I think it's neat mechanically but the move off of NeoGeo hardware hurt the background art a lot, and it relies a little too much on nostalgia via Rootmars and the Ikari Warrior dudes. XX does a better job with the character differences outside of Leona being broken.
3 is the best imo, with all the alternate paths, all the secrets, all the enemy types, all the weapons, and all the sprite work.
Just look at the first boss and how painfully well the crab is animated!!
MS3 is the most impressive one, but each time I play it it gets kind of worse. frick SNK for making the last level be like 70% of the game. It's just an endurance test and a way more obvious cashgrabbing tactic than the MS2 final boss that moron anon is talking about.
>It's just an endurance test and a way more obvious cashgrabbing tactic than the MS2 final boss that moron anon is talking about.
I didn't say 3 was better at any point. Just that 2 is also shit.
>great bosses >great level design and pacing >minimal filler, bloat, and gimmicks >challenging but fair >finally adds Slug Attack as separate button >puts all the content in Slug 3 to actual good use instead of just as a bullet sponge stuffed away in some side path no one ever takes >multiple paths that are actually balanced with tradeoffs

It messes up the timing of enemy attacks in multiple parts. In some cases it basically switches to easy mode. I'm guessing you haven't played enough of the original to notice, although you're right it does make the game play better.
They were all great until Metal Slug 6 when they switched over to that ugly fake pixel art graphics. I hate that shit and it has never looked good in any game that does it. Metal Slug 7 was even worse because the graphics looked very sloppily scaled and compressed and it just looked like ass and will give you a headache if you try to actually play it.
Metal Slug Advance is pretty good though and it's worth giving a shot. The graphics and animation aren't as smooth as the Neo Geo games but for what it is it's a fine little game.
Metal Slug is not actually a very deep game but the visuals and audio ooze with so much style, charm and quality that they absolutely carry it from just being a straightforward Contra clone to being absolute dynamite.
1's engine is too jank.
Even when overclocked at 300% it feels like shit to play.
2 is worse.
X is the first Metal Slug game that actually feels good to play.
3 is back to being shit because soldiers now tank your shots with their bodies, fricking up with the pace.
lag
2 with overclock already runs full speed. X still has slowdown so you still need to overclock it
>improves engine
in what way? Everything functions identically except for the ability to rebind Slug Attack for AES (which is one of the few welcome additions).
>adds bosses
You mean just copy pastes old bosses in random fricking spots to frick with the level design and pacing? Seriously, most of these changes are fricking terrible and just change for the sake of it. There are only a couple sections that are arguable improvements, and it comes with a lot of bullshit changes.
The new locust mummy that is inconsistent with level mechanics (outright kills you instead of transforming you), new weapons just randomly strewn about where they don't make sense, grenade spam out the ass, fat mechanic that now overstays its welcome and is an obnoxious pain in the ass instead of being just a funny gimmick and inconvenience, the motorcycle spam section, the giant rocket wells, giving you a Slug right before the subway trivializing the whole section, you can now cheese both the wavy bridge and Allen (two of the most difficult sections of the game), and the final boss is a joke that showers you with weapons.
>actual focus to each section of the game
????? ESL moment
2 is piss easy dude. You just blow through the levels with ease. Shit's even easier than 1.
X actually improves the pacing by giving each section more focus and actually having enemy and weapon variety.
It also doesn't remove any content from 2 and only adds on top of it. Like how the first boss from 2 is actually a midboss in X.
Sounds to me like you have some serious skill issues, that's why you don't like it.
>2 is piss easy dude. You just blow through the levels with ease

The part where the tank comes in and the rocket throwing guy is behind it is just blatantly unfair design. Obviously you spam bombs at the tank instantly once you know, but until you know that it's just a guaranteed death. The start of the last level as well requires you to play it in a very specific way you would never know without watching a guide. Dishonest, bad design not worth playing.

I've no-missed both games. 2 is significantly harder. The main difficult sections of the game (the section before the sewer, the sewer, the wavy bridge, Allen, the final boss fight) are all way, way easier in X. X trivializes a lot of sections by throwing extra Slugs or adding a bunch of extra weapons. The main difficulty in X comes from grenade spam and fat gimmick, both of which are just frustrating and annoying. Having hidden caches of food that instantly turn you fat is just fricking cruel, it's a shit change to a game that had otherwise fantastic pacing.

You shitters don't even clear these games, you just mindlessly credit feed and basedface at the setpieces and effects. It's not surprising that you don't actually know the games, the difference between them, or have any examples to give. Yes, Slug X is marginally more difficult on average in stages 2-4, but Slug 2 is significantly harder in stages 5-6 which is where the huge bulk of the difficulty lies and what makes or breaks your runs.
And no, X's primary purpose was fixing the crippling slowdown in 2 due to a programming error.

Just placebo for you unless you post examples. I've played sections with and without slowdown and the amount of projectiles/shots is identical, just one is running a whole lot slower.
I like 1 the most thematically but I also really like the rest.
Something I don't understand is if the games are natively laggy or it's just the emulation.
No. You see. 2 is the hardest game cuz it runs at 20% speed and you have to hold right to fly past every stage with your Shotgun and Laser until you reach the final boss which is really really hard cuz you have to get inside the slug and be 100% invincible for 1/3 of the fight!
You have to route 50+ bombs, do the first phase while farming lasers, dodge a ton of UFO spam in the second phase, inflict a ton of damage to get the Slug to appear, then carefully maneuver the Slug into position with a giant swarm of UFOs flooding you with bullets. It's definitely up there with the hardest bosses in arcade gaming, let alone Metal Slug.
This is his youtube account he refuses to link himself for some unknown reason https://www.youtube.com/@formlessx. All the runs on that account are games he also reviewed on his backloggd account and they all use overclocking and turbo fire which are staples of him posting.
>same opinions on video games >shock troopers review uploaded a few weeks after the shock troopers run on the youtube channel >early videos are the same games originally teased as thumbnails on /vr/ years ago
It's obvious. Where's the Gunstar expert run?
How does one emulate the metal slug games? I want to play this series but the emulators are so fricking gay compared to simple shit like citra or dolphin
Get Retroarch, look up "Neo Geo bios" and put neogio.zip in Retroarch's system folder, download the FinalBurn Neo core for Retroarch, select the game's zip file in Retroarch, and you're set.
It's pretty good. Doing the "one location over one day" gimmick is pretty cool and it utilizes the new mechanics of 6 a little better, as long as you ignore Leona breaking the game.
None of these games are fair. They all are meant to eat your quarters
The handheld ones (1st Mission, 2nd Mission, Advance, & 7/XX) weren't meant to eat quarters. Honestly Advance's Final Mission in an arcade game would be some real bullshit.
It's good to have opinions, even if they are objectively wrong.
The objectively wrong opinion being that any MS after the first game is worth playing.
2 > 4 > 1 > X > 3 > 6 > 5
>4 over anything
Can agree with the rest though, extra bonus points for ignoring both 7 and XX
MS2 fricking sucks. The last two levels are complete dogshit and the final boss is disgustingly cynical in its attempt to farm you for quarters.
skill differential
Nah the game is just bullshit. Mashing the shoot button is not difficult or fun or clever design. Neither is spamming random UFOs with 1 billion HP to defend the giant UFO wall with 1 zillion HP. It's lazy and it's cheap to steal money.

X is the first Metal Slug game that actually feels good to play.
3 is back to being shit because soldiers now tank your shots with their bodies, fricking up with the pace.
3 and metal slug x are overhated
Nobody hates X, only a known schizo shitposter who pretends to like 2 over it just to be a contrarian.
X is not hated, it's just a sidegrade at best, a downgrade at worst, from 2.
>Removes lag, improves engine, adds bosses and actual focus to each section of the game
>downgrade
Until the tunnel part where it becomes unfair bullshit. Then that abomination of a last level and total joke of a final boss. Trash game just for that.
>Until the tunnel part where it becomes unfair bullshit
The part where the tank comes in and the rocket throwing guy is behind it is just blatantly unfair design. Obviously you spam bombs at the tank instantly once you know, but until you know that it's just a guaranteed death. The start of the last level as well requires you to play it in a very specific way you would never know without watching a guide. Dishonest, bad design not worth playing.
>but until you know that it's just a guaranteed death.
Have you ever played an arcade game before?
Only bad arcade games have gotcha moments like that.
>train starts coming
i prefer my fingers and my controller intact, thank you
go back
I've no-missed both games.
>2 is significantly harder.
Dude, you clearly don't play the games if you spout moronic shit like this.
You must be the ESL schizo shitposter contrarian.
Have a last pity (You)
>2 is significantly harder.
They literally made X in response to players in the arcade calling 2 an easy game you fricking moron.
Post your 1CC homosexual
>You shitters don't even clear these games
Neither do you.
Lol seething no clear shitters.
>games doesn't have crippling slowdown
>timing is different since it is now running at full speed instead of at quarter speed
woah... no way...
>newbie shitter gets called out
>Still won't post 1cc
Lmao
I have almost a hundred no-miss clears at this point, not entertaining shitters. If you know, you know.
>I have almost a hundred no-miss clears at this point
where? in your dream?
Even parts without slowdown are affected. Like I said, you would probably notice if you actually played it enough.
Just placebo for you unless you post examples. I've played sections with and without slowdown and the amount of projectiles/shots is identical, just one is running a whole lot slower.
Here's my clear.
lol, good one
What's so funny? It's my run.
have a nice day shitter
I like 1 the most thematically but I also really like the rest.
Something I don't understand is if the games are natively laggy or it's just the emulation.
i heard Metal Slug devs are capable of putting out over 120 gacha crossover assets a minute
I never played that one because the girls can't get fat in it
I can't get over the way MS1 handles diagonal inputs.
>all this argument about overclocking and slow-down
Just play it on Steam morons.
Steam is just a frontend running a really bad propietary emulator. Even the sound fx are fricked because of how bad the emulation is.
There's no Fio and Eri in MS1 so it's automatically bad
When it comes to replaying the series, I have the least hesitation with the original. Excellent pacing.
2 took more quarters from me so I disagree.
>shitter
Did the MS2gay run away from /vr/ again and took over this thread? His copypasted posts are all over the place. What a pathetic bastard.
No.
It's definitely up there with the hardest bosses in arcade gaming, let alone Metal Slug.
>route
this homie thinks he's routing by holding grenades throughout the entire level lmao
you have to learn all the grenade locations, not die, and figure out how to approach the stage using minimal grenades. Yes, that would be routing.
>he grenade locations
homie they just spawn from the same enemies
>not die, and figure out how to approach the stage using minimal grenades.
This is literally every stage in any MS game lol
This is his youtube account he refuses to link himself for some unknown reason https://www.youtube.com/@formlessx. All the runs on that account are games he also reviewed on his backloggd account and they all use overclocking and turbo fire which are staples of him posting.
>guys look, look, I figured it all out!!
>same opinions on video games
>shock troopers review uploaded a few weeks after the shock troopers run on the youtube channel
>early videos are the same games originally teased as thumbnails on /vr/ years ago
It's obvious. Where's the Gunstar expert run?
lmao, imagine being this utterly obsessed and mindbroken by an anonymous user on a videogame board
You decided to make finding your runs an easter egg hunt instead of just posting them yourself for some reason.
They never should have added WOMEN to Metal Slug.
1 is the BEST
what's wrong with MSX?
everything - colors ,out of place bosses , dumb weapons like iron lizards ....
>t. fat
Is it worth picking up?
It's pretty good. Doing the "one location over one day" gimmick is pretty cool and it utilizes the new mechanics of 6 a little better, as long as you ignore Leona breaking the game.
The handheld ones (1st Mission, 2nd Mission, Advance, & 7/XX) weren't meant to eat quarters. Honestly Advance's Final Mission in an arcade game would be some real bullshit.
