Anyway, Persona has no canon romance choice and that's got sequels of all kinds, with the same characters. Hades is getting one, and with today's technology importing a choice would be trivial. Honestly, more games should do save importing anyway, it always feels fantastic.

Because it is extremely gay. It forces you to use healing every turn instead of only needing to spend a few turns healing damage from enemies and you can buff, debuff, or deal damage the rest of the time. You get a dedicated healer who does nothing else and burns through SP like a drunk prostitute. But you still want a debuffer/buffer so that’s two one-dimensional party members which sucks dick. Aside from being boring this also slows combat down significantly because you have fewer offensive actions.

If you're actually curious unlike everyone else, followers are tied to the archetypes, which is this game's job system. Each follower you meet unlocks a new job/archetype for the player and party. They said this during the showcase. They also said that there are a frickton of archetypes to learn.
The more you bond with a follower, the more your archetype/job will evolve. There's a screengrab somewhere showing some of the jobs and you can see that jobs/archetypes like "Knight" can evolve into "Dark Knight".
In my opinion, the reason to eliminate romance with the followers is smart. Because archetypes are tied to the followers, if players had favorites that they'd want to romance, they'd be de-incentivized in meeting new followers and bonding with them. Worse still, players may end up bonding and romancing someone they like personality-wise, but the job they get from them is a play style they don't like, like "Merchant". No romance means players are incentivized to meet and bond with as many followers as possible for a more diverse job system and playstyle.
