Metroid
Castlevania
Various subtitles of those two
yeah but they're metroids and vanias, I'm talking about metroidvanias over here
I never finished hollo knight. Still play portrait of ruin now and then
Blasphemous is neat but honestly it's been pretty easy so far.
I dunno. I just love them all. Maybe I have low standards for them.
Order of ecclesia is great.
The ambiance of this game was awesome I which more game were like that,
I was disappointed with "true ending" which is kill god or was it ?
But anywasy I really liked the Christian theme
Holy shit I wrote like a moron
Metroid Dread
When I played Hollow Knight way back when, I thought I just hated the genre apart from metroid because everyone seems to like HK
Little did I know at the time great games like blasphemous, Ori and more were on the way. Can't believe anyone can actually claim to like hollow knight but some people are into scat so I guess anything is possible.
What is it about hollow knight you disliked in comparison to games like ori?
The world seemed designed to be frustrating to traverse, visuals are nearly identical frame to frame apart from a filter, controls have been bugged for years and will often miss button presses (which was especially bad in my case, often preventing jumping - had the game in my library for months before I gave up and refunded), performance is fricking appalling for how basic it looks - it needs a full on dedicated GPU, it's expensive for what it is & nothing in the entire game or story seems to have any weight or importance.
More personal things are that I strongly dislike the art style (and disliked it more as I played due to how indistinct and muddy the visuals are), disliked the audio mix, disliked the writing style & disliked the boss combat.
As I said, I was worried I just hated the genre, but nope - I just really, really hated my time with that one game.
Not that anon, but I have to say I disagree with you strongly on pretty much every point though I appreciate you taking the time to articulate yourself regardless. Can't say I ran into any of the performance issues but that'd certainly color one's impression.
What other metroidvanias have you tried?
Yeah a lot of HK fans react very aggressively to my experience with the game, but that's the impression it left. I recommend you try running HK on integrated gpu, which Ori can do fine. The performance is surprisingly bad, probably because it is a slapped together unity title whereas Ori had a lot more funding and polish by more experienced devs.
I have played the following in the past few years:
Super metroid
Metroid fusion
Metroid Prime series about 100 times
Castlevania 1
Dracula x
Ori & currently playing Ori 2
Jedi fallen order I guess?
Control?
Blasphemous in progress as well
Those are just the recent ones, I've probably played others and forgotten. I'm 31 now, not that much time to game, and my main genre is immersive sims.
Which of those would you say you liked best? Also, what are your favourite immersive sims? I don't think I've ever played one.
Vitriol is unfortunately common on the internet, doubly so on Ganker. And understandable on the age front, I'm 30 but work in tech in a WFH gig so I have ample time to play shit. Integrated graphics is definitely going to limit your options though.
You've played most of the heavy-hitters (and christ do I wish there was something even remotely similar to metroid prime anywhere in the indie space) but Bloodstained is probably worth checking out if you haven't already. A little obtuse because it's by the same guy as Symphony of the Night so the folks who kickstarted it wanted a very particular flavor of nonsense, but it's well-polished and well-executed. Sundered has really fun and flowing movement with combat that's more horde mitigation than fixed spawns and a map that shuffles every time you die. If you're up for something a bit more experimental there's Yoku's Island Express, a pinball metroidvania.
Another thing I've personally enjoyed quite a bit is Super Metroid randomizer. It shuffles all the item locations with internal logic that keeps the game beatable. It's really helped me get more juice out of the game and learn a lot about the map and mechanics.
>Yeah a lot of HK fans react very aggressively to my experience with the game
I wonder why
>I wonder why
Mostly because they're insecure psychos who can't handle someone not praising their golden calf.
Ori wotw literally runs like shit on older hardware on high settings. Hk is pretty much a Flash game graphically
Ori wotw is several years and a console gen newer than the other two.
I don't care what you want to analogise HK as; it doesn't run on integrated graphics and the devs themselves list this on the store page. Are you arguing with the devs of the game?
that's because you're a dumb Black person while the other poster is a flaccid doormat
this shit runs on a potato, what are you on about
It waa full of bugs
cute bugs tho
yes
It objectively does not. Even the devs admit it will not run on integrated graphics at a playable framerate, minimum specs include a dedicated gpu.
I would say metroid Prime 1, God that's a great game. Atmosphere is flawless. Played it over several times.
It'll seem like a cop-out, but I always get something out of playing the original Deus Ex. I find the whole series pretty enjoyable, but less so as they get newer.
Yeah lol some people take things pretty seriously. I don't just have an integrated chip, I do have a 1070ti in my gaming rig and net streaming enabled, but it's just easier to have something that runs on my surface since I do a lot of field work.
Oh man, if only there was something trying to copy MP!
I've seen Bloodstained, I want to get it once I finish SoTN. If you recommend it I'll pick it up.
Haven't looked at sundered iirc, I'll look it up.
Yeah there are some great classic metroid things floating around, been meaning to try some SM mods and AM2R.
Thanks for the info, fren!
Maybe they identify personally with a video game they paid for?
In case you morons can't tell this is (you) bait. It's every [popular consensus opinion] inverted about both games.
Ori on the other hand I liked because the visuals were really classy and well done, very easy to see what is what, combat was tight and responsive, world design was great and limited boring backtracking, lots of distinct areas, audio was well done, writing was that magic "just enough" to give the player motivation and was not required to enjoy the game, length was PERFECT, not overpriced, looks WAY better than hollow knight but performs better as well & runs on older hardware.
>Everyone that likes the game is the problem. Not me
Lmao
>people like all sorts of things
What you read:
>people who like this game are bad
Seek therapy.
Anon compared liking hk to liking scat and said he cannot believe people like it.
Yes. Are you saying that people who like scat are bad people, like they rob and steal and stuff? What's your point?
>what's your point?
>unintelligible
At least you admit it?
not even the same anon
all I am saying is that liking scat is pretty bad
Is it morally bad? How is it bad
why does it need to be morally bad
it's literal shit
You personally identify with a video game and are personally offended when someone doesn't like it. You take this as an invalidation of yourself as a human being, because the thing you like isn't the most popular, universally loved thing you imagined it was. This isn't normal behaviour.
dude literally compared liking a game to liking shit
You can like the game, or shit if you like. Nobody is telling you what to like.
Pretty rich coming from the guy getting personally offended by one person not loving a game he likes.
You're kinda a bonkers scallywag, mate. Kinda off your rockers, bruv
Not an argument sadly. Have a good one 🙂
But you can like it.
>But you can like it
yeah, which is bad and wrong
According to you. Unless you mean to say taste itself is objective? In which case I would agree, and HK is objectively bad.
I haven't even played hollow knight
why are you like this
You're the one replying to me, I posted the original reply we are all replying to. Why are you replying over and over if you're not happy with the responses? I'm very happy watching you all run around in circles because I said a controversial thing.
And ironically the reason it is controversial is not because lots of people like HK, but because HK fans are so invariably over-sensitive and identify with the game personally. Much like star citizen or elite dangerous fans do. This is easily exploited to cause butt hurt.
I am sorry anon but liking scat is bad, you need help
If you agree scat is bad, you agree with my implication therein that there is objective taste, and HK can therefore be objectively bad.
k I don't care about HK but you really need to stop defending this fetish of yours
take it up with that guy who said he couldn't understand how people can like hollow knight. you've somehow taken the position of defending him despite arguing against his thought process.
>I dislike hollow knight. People claim to like it but people like all sorts of things
You got personally offended by this, and I don't care. Be offended then. So what?
I'm not the guy who got 'offended'. But that other guy implied it's so odd to like hollow knight as to be unbelievable, in fact he went as far as to say he can't believe people can 'claim' to like hollow knight, adding this subtle insinuation that people might not even actually like it but only be claiming to do so. This reveals immense narcissism. No reasonable person would say 'I can't believe anyone can actually claim to like ice cream', because it's obvious how people can and that it's an extremely popular thing. But because he didn't personally like it, for silly reasons like using a piece of shit (this phrase refers to something being bad btw) to play it on, it must mean, in his solipsistic worldview, that it's nearly unimaginable how other people can like it.
It's easy to make shit up, but maybe you should take your meds
>This isn't normal behaviour.
How many people do you know
Ahh so you are so far off the deep end you have convinced yourself getting personally upset by other people's tastes is normal. Man, that sucks. I hope it gets better for you in future.
wtf
Answer the question
>enter interesting thread
>shizo is present
Maybe you should stop hating yourself and realize that somebody not liking a game is not meant to personally offend you 🙂
>the problem
Did anybody say at any point that any one person or group of people is a "problem" other than you? No.
Why invent things to be offended by?
number 1 baby
Blasphemous was great. Fantastic art style, novel idea to base a game on a grimdark version of catholic guilt, good bosses and controls/mechanics that felt just right. I should play the expansion but it's been a while, I'm not sure I could get into it without replaying the main game from the start, and I have so my other stuff to play.
I could definitely see it making into my top 5,
Salt and Sanctuary has the deepest lore.
>pyramid

>lore analyses are now autism
Hello 2011+ newfriend!
They actually are.
uh yes?
looks and plays fricking ass though
>looks and plays fricking ass though
No that's the sequel, sanctuary is based
>get hit once from off-screen, fall to death on platforming sequence
>die bec enemy hit you from off-screen when youre about to transition a screen through a doorway
>1hit ko meme enemies
Sanctuary was fine, but Sacrifice absolutely shat on their existing formula. These games live and die on boss design and it was 110% phoned in.
Sanctuary devs were a married couple.
Sacrifice devs were the (divorced) man + a team, who sold out to Epic Games.
Not as deep as me in your mom
Play UnEpic
>Same thread of so many people saying Metroid, Blasphemous, Catlevania and Hollow Knight over and over while ignoring every other game
Here are some games everyone ITT should pirate and try out.
Infernax
HunterX
Rabi-Ribi
La-Mulana
Vomitoreum
Odallus
Cave Story
Ender Lilies
Momodora.
Lost Ruins
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
>Cave Story
man i stopped playing when i couldnt rescue the girl
then i googled what i had to do and it was like 20 different steps, wtf
also the best ending is absolutely moronic, 4 bosses in a row or smth without heal, didnt manage to do it
Pretty solid list. I'd also add Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.
>Infernax
Great
>Rabi-Ribi
Chibi anime bullshit for weebs
>La-Mulana
Agressively unfun to control
>Cave Story
Tedious to get started in
>Ender Lilies
Decent
>Momodora.
Tedious
>Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Stand still after every kill to wait for the one coin to fall.
HK is the obvious winner, batbarian and grizzland are under rated. Bloodstained and timespinner are sotn clones but fun. Mummy Demastered is criminally overlooked
>cares about rabi artstyle
youre a dumb fricking nigro
That's 2d dark souls though
It's literally castlevania with simpler combat and potions you fill at save points if that's all it takes to be "dark souls" then souls games were never a real genre anyway.
I instinctively get ready to catch the boss orb when I kill a blasphemous boss, I forgot that there won't be one.
Dark Souls is literally 3d metroidvania
Blasphemous is my favorite one by far. I like the aesthetic of Hollow Knight, the music and the characters, but the combat just feels off and the whole game is too hard.
Blasphemous is perfectly balanced.
1. Super Metroid
2. SotN
3. An Untitled Story
4. Hollow Knight
5. Metroid Dread
Other solid games are: all Metroid games, aria of sorrow, dawn of sorrow, bloodstained, momodora 4, toki tori 2 and mummy demastered
If you didn't beat all of above, don't bother with other stuff.
Absolutely based, I've never heard An Untitled Story brought up on this board. Shame I was a dumb kid when I played it and couldn't get past the first few zones
is blasphemous a good videogame?
nah, its 2D dark souls without the souls and shitty gameplay
visuals are kinda nice sometimes
Yes. It's castlevania with simple combat and instant death spikes. Bosses are neat visually but a bit too easy. It's basically aria of sorrow but with only one weapon and fewer spells.
Could use a few more enemies too. It's a good game though.
>aria
Dawn. I always get those mixed up.
Tried ender lillies and gave up like 4 hours in. The sound design is genuinely awful. Hitting enemies is exactly the same as hitting air. It feels like half of the sfx are missing. Music is cool and the game looks pretty, but everything else sucks. Every room is the same. The map fricking sucks and just displays rooms as rectangles. The exploration sucks. Combat is like in Ori 1 where it is functional, but not very good. Ori knows that it is not a combat game, unlike ender lillies that shoves the slow boring combat everywhere. Dunno if it gets better later, but I did not have a fun time.
For me, it's Environmental Station Alpha.
>main character is a robot, no disgusting feelings or emotions (the thing that ruined Metroid)
>no obnoxious cinematic storytelling (the thing that ruined Castlevania)
>no obnoxious focus on graphics or other useless garbage
It's what I think of when I think of a good 'vania.
Why can't all indie 2d games look like the Ori games? They are probably the prettiest games I have ever played. Pretty fun too.
Because it's not an indie game. Simple as.
the new ending they added is shit
For me, it's (in no particular order):
>Aria of Sorrow
>Cave Story
>Ori and the Will of the Wisps
>Metroid Zero Mission
>Environmental Station Alpha
Super Metroid
Blasphemous
Bloodstained
Environmental station alpha
Touhou Luna nights
not that clunky piece of shit slog that's for sure.
S Tier = Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow.
A Tier = Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Hollow Knight, Hollow Knight: Silksong, Blasphemous, Blasphemous II, The Last Faith, Ghost Song.
B Tier = Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance.
HUGE GAP
Absolute dogshit = Shitstained a.k.a Bloodstained.
Shitstained is the most disappointing game I have ever played, thank God I pirated it first to see if it would be good or not. Iga truly dropped the ball, he got millions in crowdfunding yet he only managed to shit out this abomination called Shitstained. Miriam is extremely ugly. The setting is dumb and 100x weaker than Castlevania. The atmosphere is not there. The OST is not memorable like older Castlevania games. The 2.5D artstyle is vomit inducing.
Frick Shitstained and Frick Iga. He should go back on his knees, begging for Konami to work with him and make that Castlevania game he always dreamed about and have that be his last game before he retires, so his legacy ends on a good note, not on this Shitstained abomination.
>Silksong, Blasphemous II
homie these games ain't even out yet
>Hollow Knight: Silksong
The top 5 Metroid-like Castlevania games (Metroidvanias) are:
>OoE
>PoR
>DoS
>AoS
>SotN
in order.
>s tier symphony of the night
Overrated
What do you think of Souldiers? I mplaying it now, and it have some janky controls, but its fun.
stopped playing when I realised it had mixels and no resolution options.
Pixel art games should never be blown up to 800% massive pixels. pixel art looks best at it's original crisp resolution. a huge shame.
i prefer the term hollowlike
Well this thread turned to shit.
Yeah it turns out the dude complaining about vitriol went out of his way to stoke it despite being capable of reasonable discussion if his inflammatory remarks were ignored. A shame, really.
The question is, is it okay to like this thread now that it's shit?
Yes my contrarian friend
An anon split my brain in two when they pointed out pic related is arguably a metroidvania. And a bloody good one at that
Apologies for moronation
Frick that's true.
>Ctrl+F Axiom Verge. No results
I know the second game was rushed and a vast disappointment, but the first game is worth mentioning
It's very good, but I wouldn't call it too 5 due to it's signature kaizu block style placement of some pickups.
In no particular order:
Aria of sorrow
Rabi Ribi
Grime
Marrow
La Mulana
Ori2
Ori1
Jedi fallen order
Control
Metroid dread
Surprised no has actually mentioned a Fromsoft title yet.
All of the Soulsborne games are technically Metroidvanias, with Elden Ring and maybe Sekiro being the only real exceptions.
