KoF is big in china but just like mexico and 2002, China has a fixation for KoF 97 because that game was the most labbed on and popular. 98 is also popular but everyone in China preferred 97 because that game is the most linient KoF to get supers and combos out (it is also very broken but that goes without saying).
And during the time China banned consoles and games from being imported, a good number of people certainly stuck to bootlegs of KoF 97

Because when people actively engage with any KoF's gameplay they find out quick that you can safely throw out 3/4ths of its roster and that's being extremely generous. In 13's case that meant a very small selection of characters being viable and DLC characters being top tier made the whole thing even worse. This point is normally awful as many XI and 02um matches have shown, and even XIV and definitely XV had problems. I think what made XIII really egregious compared to the others was HD Mode because it wasn't attached to the regular super meter, and it enabled really fricked up combos that turned XIII into a Marvel clone.

But 2001 is on a different level of shit because while one is just literally a fricking released beta of an unfunished game, at least 12 was a KoF game that was functional, barren but playable. 2001 is the most broken KoF of all time and it's broken on both sides of the spectrum, from buggy and glitchy shit that triggers the Task Over, to an unbalanced piece of shit full of infinites caused by unblockables, to a presentation that SUCKED.

Garou is peak og SNK. Despite it's smooth animations, AoF3 sprites never grew on me...
It's more that the game flopped at the most critical time and its sprites weren't seen in a favorable light at the time. Plus there's third strike syndrome where people "like" the game but didn't actively engage with its gameplay.
Because when people actively engage with any KoF's gameplay they find out quick that you can safely throw out 3/4ths of its roster and that's being extremely generous. In 13's case that meant a very small selection of characters being viable and DLC characters being top tier made the whole thing even worse. There's that infamous Ash video that showcases the divide pretty well.

This point is normally awful as many XI and 02um matches have shown, and even XIV and definitely XV had problems. I think what made XIII really egregious compared to the others was HD Mode because it wasn't attached to the regular super meter, and it enabled really fricked up combos that turned XIII into a Marvel clone.

But 2001 is on a different level of shit because while one is just literally a fricking released beta of an unfunished game, at least 12 was a KoF game that was functional, barren but playable. 2001 is the most broken KoF of all time and it's broken on both sides of the spectrum, from buggy and glitchy shit that triggers the Task Over, to an unbalanced piece of shit full of infinites caused by unblockables, to a presentation that SUCKED.
