Yes, valve managed not only to turn vidya into a "competitive esport" which in turn ended up spreading "meta mentality" and "balance" cancer all over gaming and even single player games, but also managed to turn esports into an unregulated casino, with assets stolen off unpaid crowdsourced labor, all because it's profitable to them.

The PC gaming market was actually much healthier before steam started leeching off it.
Remember expansions that were so big they were sequels in the same engine?
Remember when fans made content for fun and not to join the monetization treadmill?
Remember when the worst DRM you could end up with was disk DRM that wanted the disk to be in your tray at all times but was easily patchable anyway?
Remember when devs let fans fully mod their games and run wild with the engine at no cost?
Remember when games weren't about an endless PvP hamster wheel and were actually fun?
Remember when games weren't killing themselves trying to be the next big esport?
Remember when games with multiplayer had an unmonetized map editor?
Remember when fans used these map editors to let their creativity run wild and create entire gaming genres out of their hard work?

Valve/Steam owned 100% by Gabe and his employees. Private Company, can't be bought or sold.

How about this, if you try and make your own 'launcher' try and copy at least HALF the features Steam has.

Take a look at Epic Games, they don't even allow user reviews, that's why companies use it. It requires registering on some 3rd party obscure site just to leave a review and there is no purchase proof, or link to username.

Also take a look at Battle Net launcher, they don't allow reviews; adds games to steam and they are instantly the worst rated steam game of all time. (until d4 is added next week).

It also helps to have standard features from the get go.
Then you just gotta grind it out, expect to not make it and over the years asd things that make it better than others.
There is a reason Valve went down the social platform route more and more over the years, they know they need to be the all in one application as it keeps people in their ecosystem to ensure money will go into their pocket.

      Pretty much.
Being publicly traded means you're beholden to the whims of greedy investors who only seek to use the company as yet another vehicle to make the line go up.

        Stop being moronic anon
Private companies are still beholden to whoever their shareholders are and newsflash, Valve isn't owned %100 by Gaben. So he actually has to make decisions that benefit his other shareholders or they could set up a move to dismiss him as ceo.
Private comapanies work the same as publicly traded ones for 95% of cases and EPIC and Valve are a part of that.

It happens in other secots but because you keep your scope on the video games sector you don't hear about it much. I am not sure to the degree that it happens bit it does.
So many companies just flounder around until they hit their lucky break while doing the bare minimum or just above that, all in the name of greater profits

It really just seems like Steam's competitors do not give a flying frick about the user experience of their product. They only care about how it can make them money.
The issue is that's short term thinking, which is an issue with modern capitalism as a whole. Short term spikes of profit via exploitative practices are valued over long term lower but more steady profit by fostering consumer loyalty.

This, they made a functional product that people like. It really is that simple.
Every single competitor they've ever had has been inferior. Epic didn't even try to compete on the same terms, they just attempted to strongarm their way into market share with exclusives and force people to use their product.

The customer-sided "incentives" (such as they are) were only window dressing. EGS' main rallying cry was to benefit publishers above all else, and despicably cherrypicking indie devs as the face of their programs to trick people into thinking they were benefitting "the little guy" when the majority use-case scenario for their exclusivity deals were moderate/big companies exploiting the insane amount of money Epic would give away, in order to offset games/ports that they knew were garbage and would otherwise suffer for it.

      >Artifact and bonelabs was such a masterpiece wow omg valve lemme suck your wiener.
The only masterpiece valve ever made was Portal 2. Everything else ranges from shit to pretty good but a far cry from masterpiece.
      >Steam sales keep getting worse over the years and Valve makes sure it's super difficult to compete on pricing by enforcing price parity clauses as the market leader.
At least key resellers seem to be immune by the effects. I wouldn't be surprised if Valve shuts those down eventually as well though especially since they don't get a cut on game keys. If you go on isthereanydeal you'll see that steam is very rarely the best place to even buy games these days.
      >Steam Deck is the most successful of valves hardware endeavors and calling that a success is a joke according to any industry metric besides Valve hardware expectations.
Deck is cool I guess and it definitely breathed a lot of life into the handheld market but with the shit screen and poor performance it's getting outdone by competition from China and the more OEMs making products as of late. It's probably the best thing valve has done in the past decade which goes to show how uninteresting everything else they've done has been.
      >Employees barely do shit and even simple stuff like CS2 can't hit the deadline valve themselves set for it. Hilariously Valve actually had to have structured management for HLA development because they knew it was never getting done otherwise.
So yeah employees have no reason to make new games these days. That's a good thing how?

I mostly hate him for TF2 and later even more infamously CSGO's lootboxes. Not only was TF2 the thing that brought lootboxes to the west but Valve's economy system is the worst implementation any company has ever come up. If items were trade locked and the only way to transfer ownership was through the steam market I could probably swallow that but instead we have a system rife with scamming and underage gambling because it's more money.

It works out in MS favor quite a bit
If a person wants to buy a game instead of using game pass they will choose Steam over the windows store
Also it helps against any antitrust cases that could swing towards Microsoft owning so many game companies since people at least have a choice of where a game can be bought

What he failed to take into account is the modding community had been functioning without money for 20 years up to that point and all money would have done is disrupt it, ie people pushing out quick low quality mods ito try and get quick cash, or wholesale stealing others work and claiming it as your own to sell.

I don't understand why journalists misunderstand riots announcements of 180 million users as somehow thinking they have 180 concurrent users or something when they are just saying they have 180 million accounts

Refusing to offer refunds for broken products, making it almost impossible to get in contact with them, etc., etc. The didn't operate like a normal business. They operated like a shady business. This is why Steam eventually started offering refunds. It's not because of "based gaben" being a nice guy. It's because they were compelled to by the courts of multiple countries and this was something Valve tried very hard to fight against.

So they do offer refunds after two hours of game time. Other storefronts do that too right? Like Microsoft's online store, and EGS?
Because if they don't, you should be very afraid of either of them dethroning Steam as the market leader for PC games.

Law says nothing about two hours. Law says you're still entitled to a refund fricking months later for a piece of shit product. Valve still tries to avoid following that law as much as they can get away with. Stop sucking their dick, moron.

In Valve’s defense, not offering refunds on software has long been a common practice in software retail. For better or worse it has long been a common industry practice. Granted it’s a shitty practice; it evolved from software being installable from physical media with no protection, as a way of preventing
                >buy software
                >install software
                >return software
And just sorta stuck around because hey, easy money.

The courts were right to compel Valve and other software developers to support refunds in the age of DRM/validation checks, but it’s disingenuous to act like Valve was being uncharacteristically shitty in the space. Video game consumers coming from brick and mortar and physical discs expected refunds as a matter of course, but nobody buying boxed PC software did. At least in the US it just wasn’t done. Opened software was never returnable.

                >but it’s disingenuous to act like Valve was being uncharacteristically shitty in the space
No, it's not. Because Valve was literally the only one to fight it. EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, etc. all just said "Okay. Yeah. We'll follow the law." right off the bat. Valve didn't. They just ignored it when warned they were breaking the law. And then when taken to court over it they basically just argued that they were above the law. That didn't work out too well for them.

                Anonymous

Valve was the only one of those that didn’t have any corporate presence in the countries where the lawsuits were taking place though. They assumed the law didn’t apply to them because that’s a pretty reasonable assumption. American companies as a rule don’t give a shit what the European Union (or Australia?) says isn’t okay. Obviously being an online marketplace accessible in all countries changes things somewhat but EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Sony, etc., all have offices and incorporated status in the countries where those policies exist.

Again, Valve was wrong. Them being compelled to implement refunds was exactly right. I just don’t buy the “evil greedy corporate monster” narrative on it. It was more “American company continues to do what was standard practice among all American companies in its field and doesn’t pay attention when Italy whines about it”

                Anonymous

Two problems. First, they had local servers and implemented regional pricing so claiming they don't really have a presence in those regions is bullshit. That's having your cake and eating it too. Second, the laws we're talking about also exist in America so even if it was that only America's laws would apply to them they'd still be fricked if someone actually bothered to take them to court.

                Anonymous

If American consumer protection laws actually made it a requirement that “opened” software be returnable it would have come home on a lot of retailers that predated Valve. My whole life you couldn’t return software unless it was unopened (as proof you never installed it). American law makes it plenty possible to stipulate “no fricking refunds” and get away with it, as long as the policy is clear up front (caveat emptor and all that), which it always was with software.

It’s the globalization of ecommerce, coupled with stronger consumer protection laws in other countries, that have forced American companies to (grudgingly) start offering refunds they don’t want to offer.

Here’s the policy in place RIGHT NOW, in 2023, on the Staples website. I again stress that in the US, this is a perfectly standard practice for software returns policies, for better or worse.

The ugly truth steamgoys don't want to admit is the 30% cut is somehow only the tip of the iceberg and one of the least bad things valve has done.
      >They don't make games, they take mods of existing games (often their own games) and take all the profits.
      >Valve was also the pioneer of lootboxes in this side of gaming, on top of that they also let literal gambling sites fester because it's monetarily beneficial to them and pretend those gambling sites don't exist.
      >The entire cosmetics side of that gambling is propped up by glorified slave labor by scamming creators out of their assets by giving them a pittance, and because they technically are neither hired workers or even contractors they can get away by not paying them even that pittance.
      >Constantly driving the entire industry down a death spiral where they have to make games cheap as frick to sell at all on steam sales in the sea of garbage, while simultaneously demanding AAA polish from even solo devs.
Valve has done endless irreparable damage to the vidya industry to the point of being worse than EA, and yet it's all forgiven the next steam sale where the goys can do even more damage to the gaming industry by forcing devs to undercut their games all the way to 90% off if not more a mere 6 months after release to stay competitive.

This really is an understated point. This is basically paid mods.

morons are still blaming Bethesda for inventing paid mods but Valve had already been doing it for years and continued doing it after they claimed they had decided to stop doing paid mods.

Their bullshit gets forgiven because steamgoys enjoy buying games at a 99% discount.
I genuinely don't understand why people don't just pirate at that point, it's not like you're helping the devs in any way.

don't forget valve turning a blind eye to credit card fraud sites that resell game keys for extremely cheap
sites that more often than not get shilled by ecelebs to pay the devs even less while valve still gets a cut out of that money
