Exclusives that create competition where companies are putting their best games out on their consoles is both good and bad. It's good when it makes a "console seller" that is worth buying, but it's bad in that you have to pay more money to use the console of that console-seller. But the latter isn't that big of a deal when you are an adult with a job. Paying $500 on a hobby you enjoy that will last years when people will spend that much on alchohol in a week isn't that bad if you make grownup money.

Exclusives are an outdated concept from an era where all consoles had massively different hardware and porting a game meant essentially remaking it. Modern consoles are made of practically off-the-shelf hardware with minor customizations, modern game engines let you directly export to any platform with the click of a button, and the only two reasons for exclusives to exist are that the the game is made by a first party studio, or that it's made by a third party studio that's been paid to not release the game on other platforms.

I don't understand what he is getting at. Azure, AWS, and Google Compute are all cloud platforms as a service. From what I see in the industry, Azure is mainly used for it's Azure Pipeline, Offcie365 federatio, and some AKS. AWS is usually used for it's computation like Fargate and Lambda (and AI shit now), and storage layers. I don't get what any of that has to do with video gaming. Maybe they are referring to Stadia's failed cloud gaming model since this is an old quote?
Back in 2020/2021 phil has had numerous interviews where he clearly thought the future of gaming was cloud gaming. Stadia's failure seemed to slow things down, but even now he gives keynotes mentioning cloud for the future and that xbox can't hope to keep up in the physical console market.
He just seems out of touch even now. The "cloud" is just a way for companies/organizations to itemization their infrastructure costs without having to either build their own infrastructure or co-locate in someone else's. It's absolutely useful to a small team that doesn't want to have worry about that physical stuff or large teams that need to rapidly scale out and down. But the thing is I have all the computation and infrastructure I need to play a game at my house. And everyone who already has power and internet already has the needed infrastructure, as well. You don't need redundant circuits and geoloadbalanced instances to play a game in your own house.

I worked for a startup in Finland. We started with AWS, but then Azure came and gave us half a million dollars in Azure credits. The engineers hated every minute, but hey it was free. It was rarely completely down, but we FREQUENTLY ran into issues of degraded service. High latency spikes, etc. As soon as the money ran out, we went right back to AWS.

Nintendo relies on its exclusives which is a blessing and a curse. As long as Nintendo has great exclusive IPs, no amount of technology on Microsoft's side will substitute for it - not to mention Nintendo has good technology on its own. But Nintendo happens to be in a high period right now with their flagship franchises selling quite well. The flipside is that if their is a draught of good Nintendo games for any extended period of time, or if they make another Wii U blunder, the company takes a huge hit. Essentially Nintendo is rolling the dice every generation. If Microsoft manages to corner the rest of the non-exclusive market the risk Nintendo takes is even higher.

Therefore, customers have a vested interest in wanting the company to be successful, as their system of choice will then become more useful in turn. As such, if the company makes a bad decision, this reduces the value of their console and forces them to either jump ship to their less preferred option (that has for example a worse controller layout) or play with less games made for it and less people to party with.

I hate how Sony followed the payed online model. Bloodbourne is the only souls game I never played online. That was a competitive edge the playstation had, along with good exclusive. Now Sony doesn't have either one.

The earlier MMOs like Neverwinter Nights(not the one by Bioware) required you to pay BY THE HOUR. $6 an hour in 1991, so with inflation that's about $13.51 today. That's more than FF14's monthly fee every hour.

If you weren't around at the time it might not make sense but EQ was such a massive step forward for the MMO genre it's not even funny(but it also arguably ruined them forever if you preferred the Ultima Online style of games). The contemporary games were mostly 2D so it was probably to recoup dev costs on top of the server costs because they had no idea how many players it would even have initially. But it was the equivalent of if someone were to release a good VR MMO today, it was that much of a step forward graphically.

Wii U, Gamecube, PS3 are the ultimate proof that exclusives don't really matter because you have to wait until the next generation before people start to consider buying your consoles. The only thing normalgays need to swap is a 10% or 20% discount when buying games on SteamOS for a year or 2 and for SteamOS(and proton) to work for 99% of games without much hassle. Right now when devs are optimizing for the Deck, more and more games just work on Linux. Valve could always require companies to make sure Linux versions work and the devs would have to comply or else their game might as well not release on PC. Look at how dead every game on EGS is.

I bought an xbox because it's a dirt cheap entry into modern games, again with dirt cheap games and I don't have a want for a gaming PC anymore, to play shit ports of the exact same games, set up in space imI dont really have now that I own a house and have a family. The PC series I liked are dead. The mods I liked are dead.
I didn't buy a PS because Sony's exclusives are awful now, you still have to play online, the control pad got worse gen after gen and the xbox has good backward compatability, as well as a library of games that I've never tried before, having always had PlayStation and PC.
I really like it as a console and wouldn't go back to PS. If I absolutely couldn't get an Xbox again, I'd get a very cheap "gaming" laptop and just play the 2008 games I already play on my wife's old mac from her uni days
I forgot about backwards compatibility. That's actually a good point. I would like to play Fable 2, Red Dead Redemption, or JSRF some day as they don't emulate well.
The back compat is fantastic, like they were made natively for the console you play them on, but JSRF isn't part of it, nor is any licensed game. It's a Shane how limited it is and I wouldn't use it as a selling point, just a nice benefit

The differences between the XSX and PS5 aren't as stark as between Saturn, N64 and PlayStation. They are just budget PCs running mostly Unreal engine games and are sold for half what HP sells them for in exchange for royalties which aren't as important after buying the most important third parties. Windows 12 will sell western games. PS6 will sell niche Japanese games and western games on medium settings.
