there is no such thing as "backwards compatibility for the PS4", that's the default because the architecture of the last gen consoles is so similar to the current gen consoles. Playstation lacks all backwards compatibility for the PS3 and PS2 though whereis MS actually put in some effort to make lots of OG Xbox and 360 games backwards compatible.

The whole industry has hit the wall with development. It takes too long and costs too much to make games now. Imagine spending years of your life and hundreds of millions of dollars for a game that has a sales collapse within a week or two of its release. That's the new reality.
A lot of it is driven by wokeness, and companies listenig to Sweet Baby, Anita Sarkeesian, and other fricking meddlers who take no financial responsibility for the direction they steer the works of other companies into. In fact I'd argue that this is a HUGE chunk of poor game sales.
The industry needs to become more efficient. They need to hire "speed-builders" who can make a given map in Unreal in an hour or two. They need to build a motion-capture library instead of having rooms full of actors doing motion capture again and again and again. They need to do more artistic and stylized designs because games like Overwatch 2, Minecraft, and Fortnight sold massive fricking tons of copies in spite of not being gritty realistic. Choosing style over realism reduces dev time as well as releiving pressure for ever-growing hardware needs.
And the industry's already crashing. That's why a few devs have already begun layoffs, and why Microsoft is evaluating its future now that it's setting in that they cannot throw an infinite amount of money at gaming forever.

You could even make the argument that Sweet Baby Inc actually helps development because it offloads most of the narrative portion, which is how these companies keep getting hired.

I know their first two consoles never broke even with costs, but I thought the XBone did manage to break even and earn a small profit.
And the Series S and Series X lose money while simultaneously selling worse the PS5 which costs more. And while Gamepass makes money it's growth isn't reaching the levels needed to be "profitable" versus how much they spend propping it up. MS drops millions on studios to get their games on Gamepass day one but subscription growth hasn't matched the investment.
